But the people said to Saul, "Must Jonathan die--he who accomplished such a great deliverance for Israel? Never! Saul’s earlier oath had brought trouble and weakness upon the troops; the people’s oath appealed to God’s justice and mercy. 2Ki 2:2 “Please stay here, for the LORD has sent me on to Bethel.”… not a hair of his head will fall to the ground, Jonathan would not suffer even the smallest harm. His earlier confidence had been that the LORD could save “by many or by few” (1 Samuel 14:6). The army redeemed Jonathan from the penalty of Saul’s vow, preventing a grievous injustice.
