1 Samuel 14:45
But the people said to Saul, "Must Jonathan die--he who accomplished such a great deliverance for Israel? Never! As surely as the LORD lives, not a hair of his head will fall to the ground, for with God's help he has accomplished this today." So the people rescued Jonathan, and he did not die.
But the people said to Saul,

Israel’s army recognized that Saul’s oath had become an unjust sentence against the very man through whom God had brought victory. Their united response restrained the king’s rashness and upheld what God had plainly done.

1Ki 12:16 When all Israel saw that the king had refused to listen…
2Ch 10:16 When all Israel saw that the king had refused to listen……
Jhn 19:15 At this, they shouted, “Away with Him! Away with Him!”…

“Must Jonathan die—he who accomplished such a great deliverance for Israel?

Jonathan had struck the Philistines in faith, and the Lord had thrown their army into confusion. The people rightly viewed the day’s deliverance as God’s work through Jonathan, placing him among the instruments God raised up to save Israel from its enemies.

1Sa 11:13 But Saul ordered, “No one shall be put to death this day,…
2Sa 23:10 Eleazar stood his ground and struck the Philistines…
Psa 98:1 A Psalm. Sing to the LORD a new song, for He has done wonders…

Never! As surely as the LORD lives,

Their oath called upon the living God as witness that Jonathan must not be put to death. Saul’s earlier oath had brought trouble and weakness upon the troops; the people’s oath appealed to God’s justice and mercy.

2Ki 2:2 “Please stay here, for the LORD has sent me on to Bethel.”…
Rut 3:13 Stay here tonight, and in the morning,…
1Ki 17:1 Now Elijah the Tishbite, who was among the settlers…

not a hair of his head will fall to the ground,

Jonathan would not suffer even the smallest harm. God’s preserving hand rested on him, and Israel refused to treat as guilty the man whom God had used for their rescue.

1Ki 1:52 And Solomon replied, “If he is a man of character,…
Luk 21:18 Yet not even a hair of your head will perish.
Act 27:34 So for your own preservation, I urge you to eat…

for with God’s help he has accomplished this today.”

Jonathan did not claim the victory for himself. His earlier confidence had been that the LORD could save “by many or by few” (1 Samuel 14:6). The people now confessed the same truth: Israel’s triumph came from God, not human strength.

1Sa 17:47 And all those assembled here will know that it is not…
Psa 118:23 This is from the LORD, and it is marvelous in our eyes.
Zec 4:6 Not by might nor by power, but by My Spirit,…

So the people rescued Jonathan, and he did not die.

The army redeemed Jonathan from the penalty of Saul’s vow, preventing a grievous injustice. Jonathan’s deliverance points beyond itself to the need for a righteous deliverer, fulfilled perfectly in Christ, who rescues His people from the death their sin deserves.

The Roman Pilgrimage: the Miracles which were Wrought in It.
[Sidenote: 1139] 33. (20). It seemed to him, however, that one could not go on doing these things with sufficient security without the authority of the Apostolic See; and for that reason he determined to set out for Rome, and most of all because the metropolitan see still lacked, and from the beginning had lacked, the use of the pall, which is the fullness of honour.[507] And it seemed good in his eyes[508] that the church for which he had laboured so much[509] should acquire, by his zeal and labour,

Jonathan, the Pattern of Friendship
'And David fled from Naioth in Ramah, and came and said before Jonathan, What have I done? what is mine iniquity? and what is my sin before thy father, that he seeketh my life? 2. And he said unto him, God forbid; thou shalt not die: behold, my father will do nothing either great or small, but that he will shew it me: and why should my father hide this thing from me? it is not so. 3. And David sware moreover, and said, Thy father certainly knoweth that I have found grace in thine eyes; and he saith,

Of Antichrist, and his Ruin: and of the Slaying the Witnesses.
BY JOHN BUNYAN PREFATORY REMARKS BY THE EDITOR This important treatise was prepared for the press, and left by the author, at his decease, to the care of his surviving friend for publication. It first appeared in a collection of his works in folio, 1692; and although a subject of universal interest; most admirably elucidated; no edition has been published in a separate form. Antichrist has agitated the Christian world from the earliest ages; and his craft has been to mislead the thoughtless, by

A Divine Cordial
We know that all things work together for good, to them that love God, to them who are the called according to his purpose. Romans viii. 28. Introduction IF the whole Scripture be the feast of the soul, as Ambrose said, then Romans 8 may be a dish at that feast, and with its sweet variety may very much refresh and animate the hearts of Gods people. In the preceding verses the apostle had been wading through the great doctrines of justification and adoption, mysteries so arduous and profound, that

Ramah. Ramathaim Zophim. Gibeah.
There was a certain Ramah, in the tribe of Benjamin, Joshua 18:25, and that within sight of Jerusalem, as it seems, Judges 19:13; where it is named with Gibeah:--and elsewhere, Hosea 5:8; which towns were not much distant. See 1 Samuel 22:6; "Saul sat in Gibeah, under a grove in Ramah." Here the Gemarists trifle: "Whence is it (say they) that Ramah is placed near Gibea? To hint to you, that the speech of Samuel of Ramah was the cause, why Saul remained two years and a half in Gibeah." They blindly

Samuel
Alike from the literary and the historical point of view, the book[1] of Samuel stands midway between the book of Judges and the book of Kings. As we have already seen, the Deuteronomic book of Judges in all probability ran into Samuel and ended in ch. xii.; while the story of David, begun in Samuel, embraces the first two chapters of the first book of Kings. The book of Samuel is not very happily named, as much of it is devoted to Saul and the greater part to David; yet it is not altogether inappropriate,
