Constructing, in the biblical context, refers to the act of building or assembling structures, often with a focus on religious or communal purposes. The Bible provides numerous accounts of construction projects, ranging from altars and tabernacles to temples and city walls. These projects often symbolize obedience, worship, and the establishment of God's presence among His people.

Old Testament Examples

1. Noah's Ark: One of the earliest examples of construction in the Bible is Noah's Ark. God commanded Noah to build an ark to preserve his family and two of every kind of animal from the impending flood. Genesis 6:14-16 details the instructions: "Make for yourself an ark of gopher wood; make rooms in the ark and coat it with pitch inside and out. And this is how you are to build it: The ark is to be three hundred cubits long, fifty cubits wide, and thirty cubits high."

2. The Tower of Babel: In Genesis 11, humanity's attempt to construct a tower reaching the heavens is recounted. This construction project was marked by pride and disobedience, leading God to confuse their language and scatter them across the earth. Genesis 11:4 states, "And they said, 'Come, let us build ourselves a city and a tower with its top in the heavens, that we may make a name for ourselves and not be scattered over the face of all the earth.'"

3. The Tabernacle: The construction of the Tabernacle was a significant event for the Israelites, serving as a portable dwelling place for God's presence. Detailed instructions were given to Moses on Mount Sinai, as recorded in Exodus 25-31. Exodus 25:8-9 says, "And they are to make a sanctuary for Me, so that I may dwell among them. You must make the tabernacle and design all its furnishings according to the pattern I will show you."

4. Solomon's Temple: King Solomon's construction of the Temple in Jerusalem was a monumental project, symbolizing the permanent dwelling place of God among His people. The account in 1 Kings 6 describes the grandeur and detailed craftsmanship of the Temple. 1 Kings 6:2 notes, "The temple that King Solomon built for the LORD was sixty cubits long, twenty cubits wide, and thirty cubits high."

5. Rebuilding the Walls of Jerusalem: After the Babylonian exile, Nehemiah led the effort to reconstruct the walls of Jerusalem, a task completed in just 52 days despite opposition. This project is recorded in the book of Nehemiah, highlighting themes of perseverance and divine assistance. Nehemiah 6:15-16 states, "So the wall was completed in fifty-two days, on the twenty-fifth of Elul. When all our enemies heard about this, all the surrounding nations were afraid and lost their self-confidence, because they realized that this work had been done with the help of our God."

New Testament References

1. Jesus as the Cornerstone: In the New Testament, construction imagery is often used metaphorically. Jesus is referred to as the cornerstone, the essential foundation of the Church. Ephesians 2:20 states, "built on the foundation of the apostles and prophets, with Christ Jesus Himself as the cornerstone."

2. Building the Church: The concept of constructing the Church is a recurring theme, emphasizing spiritual growth and unity among believers. In Matthew 16:18 , Jesus declares, "And I tell you that you are Peter, and on this rock I will build My church, and the gates of Hades will not prevail against it."

3. Wise and Foolish Builders: Jesus uses the parable of the wise and foolish builders to illustrate the importance of building one's life on His teachings. Matthew 7:24-25 says, "Therefore everyone who hears these words of Mine and acts on them is like a wise man who built his house on the rock. The rain fell, the torrents raged, and the winds blew and beat against that house, yet it did not fall, because its foundation was on the rock."

Throughout the Bible, constructing serves as both a literal and metaphorical act, representing human endeavor, divine instruction, and spiritual truths.
