Definition and Origin
Human nature refers to the inherent characteristics, including ways of thinking, feeling, and acting, that all humans tend to have. According to the Bible, human nature was originally created good and in the image of God. Genesis 1:27 states, "So God created man in His own image; in the image of God He created him; male and female He created them." This divine image endowed humanity with attributes such as rationality, morality, and the capacity for relationship with God.

The Fall and Its Consequences
The nature of humanity underwent a significant transformation due to the Fall. Genesis 3 describes the disobedience of Adam and Eve, which introduced sin into the human condition. As a result, human nature became inherently sinful. Romans 5:12 explains, "Therefore, just as sin entered the world through one man, and death through sin, so also death was passed on to all men, because all sinned." This sin nature affects every aspect of human life, leading to a propensity toward sin and rebellion against God.

Total Depravity
The doctrine of total depravity suggests that sin has affected all parts of human nature, though it does not mean that humans are as evil as they could be. Jeremiah 17:9 states, "The heart is deceitful above all things and beyond cure. Who can understand it?" This indicates that the human heart is fundamentally flawed and inclined toward evil. Ephesians 2:1-3 further describes humanity's state: "As for you, you were dead in your trespasses and sins, in which you used to walk when you conformed to the ways of this world and of the ruler of the power of the air, the spirit who is now at work in the sons of disobedience."

Redemption and Transformation
Despite the fallen state of human nature, the Bible offers hope through redemption in Jesus Christ. Through His death and resurrection, believers are offered a new nature. 2 Corinthians 5:17 declares, "Therefore if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. The old has passed away; behold, the new has come!" This transformation involves a renewal of the mind and spirit, as described in Romans 12:2 : "Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind."

The Struggle with Sin
Even after redemption, believers continue to struggle with their sinful nature. The Apostle Paul articulates this struggle in Romans 7:18-19 : "I know that nothing good lives in me, that is, in my flesh. For I have the desire to do what is good, but I cannot carry it out. For I do not do the good I want to do. Instead, I keep on doing the evil I do not want to do." This ongoing battle requires reliance on the Holy Spirit for victory over sin, as Galatians 5:16 advises, "So I say, walk by the Spirit, and you will not gratify the desires of the flesh."

The Hope of Glorification
The ultimate hope for human nature lies in the promise of glorification, where believers will be fully conformed to the image of Christ. Philippians 3:21 assures, "He will transform our lowly bodies to be like His glorious body, by the power that enables Him even to subject all things to Himself." This future transformation will eradicate the sinful nature and restore humanity to its intended state of righteousness and holiness.
