Natural Law

Natural Law refers to the belief that certain rights and moral values are inherent in human nature and can be discerned through human reason. This concept is rooted in the understanding that God's eternal law is reflected in the created order and is accessible to all people, regardless of their exposure to divine revelation. The Bible, while not explicitly using the term "natural law," supports the idea that God's moral order is evident in creation.

Romans 1:19-20 states, "For what may be known about God is plain to them, because God has made it plain to them. For since the creation of the world God’s invisible qualities—His eternal power and divine nature—have been clearly seen, being understood from His workmanship, so that men are without excuse." This passage suggests that the natural world reveals God's character and moral expectations, leaving humanity accountable to Him.

Furthermore, Romans 2:14-15 elaborates on the concept of natural law: "Indeed, when Gentiles, who do not have the law, do by nature what the law requires, they are a law to themselves, even though they do not have the law, since they show that the work of the law is written on their hearts, their consciences also bearing witness, and their thoughts either accusing or defending them." Here, the Apostle Paul indicates that even those without access to the Mosaic Law have an innate understanding of right and wrong, as God's law is inscribed on their hearts.

Conscience

Conscience is the inner sense of right and wrong that guides a person's thoughts and actions. It acts as a witness to the moral law written on the heart, as described in Romans 2:15. The Bible acknowledges the role of conscience in moral decision-making and emphasizes the importance of maintaining a clear and pure conscience before God.

1 Timothy 1:5 highlights the significance of conscience in the Christian life: "The goal of our instruction is the love that comes from a pure heart, a clear conscience, and a sincere faith." A clear conscience is essential for genuine love and faith, indicating that moral integrity is foundational to Christian living.

The Apostle Paul frequently speaks of his own conscience in his ministry. In Acts 24:16 , he declares, "In this hope, I strive always to maintain a clear conscience before God and man." This statement underscores the importance of living in accordance with one's conscience, ensuring that one's actions align with God's moral standards.

However, the Bible also warns of the dangers of a seared or corrupted conscience. In 1 Timothy 4:1-2 , Paul cautions, "The Spirit clearly says that in later times some will abandon the faith and follow deceiving spirits and things taught by demons. Such teachings come through hypocritical liars, whose consciences have been seared as with a hot iron." A seared conscience is desensitized to moral truth, leading individuals away from God's path.

In summary, natural law and conscience are integral to understanding God's moral order as revealed in Scripture. They affirm that God's law is accessible to all people and that the conscience serves as a vital guide in discerning and adhering to His will.
