The Law, or Torah, which comprises the first five books of the Old Testament, contains numerous prophecies and foreshadowings of the coming Messiah. These prophecies are foundational to the understanding of the Messianic hope in the Hebrew Scriptures and are fulfilled in the New Testament through the life and work of Jesus Christ.
Genesis 3:15 · Often referred to as the Protoevangelium, this verse is considered the first Messianic prophecy. After the fall of man, God declares to the serpent, "And I will put enmity between you and the woman, and between your seed and her seed; He will crush your head, and you will strike his heel." . This prophecy foretells the ultimate victory of the Messiah, the seed of the woman, over Satan.
Genesis 12:3 · God's promise to Abraham includes a Messianic element: "And I will bless those who bless you, and whoever curses you I will curse; and all peoples on earth will be blessed through you." . This blessing is understood to be fulfilled in the Messiah, through whom all nations would be blessed.
Genesis 49:10 · In Jacob's blessing over his sons, he prophesies concerning Judah: "The scepter will not depart from Judah, nor the ruler’s staff from between his feet, until Shiloh comes, and to him shall be the obedience of the peoples." . This prophecy points to the Messiah as a ruler from the tribe of Judah, to whom the nations will submit.
Numbers 24:17 · Balaam's oracle contains a vision of the coming Messiah: "I see him, but not now; I behold him, but not near. A star will come out of Jacob, and a scepter will rise out of Israel." . This prophecy is often associated with the star that guided the Magi to Jesus in the New Testament.
Deuteronomy 18:15-19 · Moses speaks of a future prophet like himself: "The LORD your God will raise up for you a prophet like me from among your brothers. You must listen to him." . This prophecy is seen as pointing to the Messiah, who would be a prophet, leader, and mediator between God and His people.
These prophecies within the Law not only anticipate the coming of the Messiah but also establish key aspects of His identity and mission. They reveal the Messiah as a victorious redeemer, a source of blessing to all nations, a ruler from Judah, a guiding star, and a prophet like Moses. These elements are intricately woven into the narrative of the Torah, providing a foundation for the Messianic expectations that are fulfilled in the New Testament.
