The Law of Moses, as given in the Torah, prescribed several feasts and holy days that the Israelites were to observe. These feasts were integral to Jewish religious life and served as times of remembrance, celebration, and worship. Jesus Christ, being born under the Law (
Galatians 4:4), faithfully observed these feasts, demonstrating His adherence to the Law and His role as the fulfillment of the Law and the Prophets.
Passover and the Feast of Unleavened BreadThe Passover, commemorating the Israelites' deliverance from Egypt, was one of the most significant feasts. Jesus' participation in the Passover is well-documented in the Gospels.
Luke 2:41-42 notes, "Every year His parents went to Jerusalem for the Feast of the Passover. And when He was twelve years old, they went up according to the custom of the Feast." This passage highlights Jesus' early observance of the feast. Later, during His ministry, Jesus celebrated the Passover with His disciples, which became known as the Last Supper (
Matthew 26:17-19).
Feast of Tabernacles (Sukkot)The Feast of Tabernacles, or Sukkot, was a time of rejoicing and remembrance of the Israelites' journey through the wilderness.
John 7:2, 10 records, "But soon it was time for the Jewish Feast of Tabernacles... But after His brothers had gone up to the feast, He also went, not publicly, but in secret." Jesus' attendance at this feast underscores His commitment to observing the Law and His strategic approach to His ministry.
Feast of Dedication (Hanukkah)While not one of the original Mosaic feasts, the Feast of Dedication, or Hanukkah, commemorated the rededication of the Second Temple.
John 10:22-23 states, "At that time the Feast of Dedication took place in Jerusalem. It was winter, and Jesus was walking in the temple courts in Solomon’s Colonnade." Jesus' presence at this feast indicates His engagement with Jewish traditions and His role as the Light of the World, a theme celebrated during Hanukkah.
Feast of Weeks (Pentecost)The Feast of Weeks, or Shavuot, marked the giving of the Law at Sinai and the wheat harvest. While the Gospels do not explicitly mention Jesus attending this feast, His disciples were gathered in Jerusalem for Pentecost when the Holy Spirit descended upon them (
Acts 2:1-4). This event signifies the fulfillment of the Law through the Spirit, a continuation of Jesus' ministry.
Feast of Trumpets (Rosh Hashanah) and Day of Atonement (Yom Kippur)The Feast of Trumpets and the Day of Atonement were solemn observances. While the Gospels do not provide specific accounts of Jesus attending these feasts, His life and ministry were deeply rooted in the Jewish liturgical calendar. His ultimate sacrifice on the cross fulfilled the atoning work symbolized by Yom Kippur, as He became the ultimate High Priest and the perfect sacrifice for sin (
Hebrews 9:11-12).
In attending these feasts, Jesus not only fulfilled the requirements of the Law but also revealed deeper spiritual truths and foreshadowed the new covenant established through His death and resurrection. His observance of the feasts highlights His identity as the Messiah who came not to abolish the Law, but to fulfill it (
Matthew 5:17).
