Manasseh, the firstborn son of Joseph and Asenath, holds a significant place in biblical history as one of the patriarchs of the tribes of Israel. His account is primarily found in the Book of Genesis, where he is introduced as part of the family of Joseph, the favored son of Jacob (Israel).

Birth and Family Background

Manasseh was born in Egypt during the period of Joseph's rise to power as the second-in-command to Pharaoh. His mother, Asenath, was the daughter of Potiphera, priest of On (Genesis 41:50-52). The name "Manasseh" means "causing to forget," as Joseph declared, "God has made me forget all my trouble and all my father’s household" (Genesis 41:51). This name reflects Joseph's journey from suffering to prosperity and his desire to move beyond the hardships he faced in his early life.

Adoption by Jacob

In a significant event recorded in Genesis 48, Jacob, nearing the end of his life, adopts Manasseh and his younger brother Ephraim as his own sons. This adoption elevates them to the status of direct heirs alongside Jacob's other sons. Jacob's decision is a pivotal moment, as it effectively grants Joseph a double portion of inheritance through his two sons. Jacob declares, "Now your two sons, who were born to you in the land of Egypt before I came to you, are mine; Ephraim and Manasseh shall be mine, just as Reuben and Simeon are mine" (Genesis 48:5).

During the blessing ceremony, Jacob intentionally crosses his hands, placing his right hand on Ephraim, the younger, and his left on Manasseh, the firstborn. Joseph attempts to correct his father, but Jacob insists, saying, "I know, my son, I know. He too will become a people, and he too will be great. Nevertheless, his younger brother will be greater than he, and his descendants will become a multitude of nations" (Genesis 48:19). This prophetic act foreshadows the future prominence of the tribe of Ephraim over that of Manasseh.

Tribal Legacy

The tribe of Manasseh becomes one of the twelve tribes of Israel, with its inheritance divided into two portions: one on the east side of the Jordan River and the other on the west. This division reflects the tribe's significant size and influence. The eastern half settles in the region of Gilead and Bashan, while the western half occupies land in central Canaan, alongside the tribe of Ephraim.

Throughout Israel's history, the tribe of Manasseh plays a crucial role in various military and political events. Notably, members of the tribe join forces with Gideon in the battle against the Midianites (Judges 6-7) and participate in the anointing of David as king over all Israel (1 Chronicles 12:31).

Spiritual and Historical Significance

Manasseh's account is a testament to God's providence and the fulfillment of His promises. Despite being born in a foreign land, Manasseh is grafted into the covenantal blessings of Israel through Jacob's adoption. His life and legacy illustrate the themes of redemption, divine favor, and the unfolding of God's plan for His people.

In the broader narrative of Scripture, Manasseh's inclusion among the tribes of Israel underscores the importance of faithfulness and obedience to God's covenant. His account serves as a reminder of the enduring impact of God's promises and the ways in which He works through individuals and families to accomplish His purposes.
