The Tribe of Manasseh, one of the twelve tribes of Israel, is named after Manasseh, the firstborn son of Joseph and Asenath, an Egyptian woman. Manasseh, along with his brother Ephraim, was adopted by Jacob as his own sons, thus receiving an inheritance among the tribes of Israel (
Genesis 48:5). The tribe was divided into two half-tribes, with one settling on the east side of the Jordan River and the other on the west.
Among the notable figures associated with the Tribe of Manasseh is Barzillai the Gileadite, a wealthy and influential man from Rogelim. Barzillai is best known for his loyalty and support to King David during Absalom's rebellion. When David fled Jerusalem to escape Absalom, Barzillai provided essential supplies and sustenance to the king and his followers, demonstrating remarkable generosity and allegiance (
2 Samuel 17:27-29).
Barzillai's actions are recorded in the context of David's return to Jerusalem after Absalom's defeat. As David prepared to cross the Jordan River, Barzillai came to bid him farewell. David, in gratitude for Barzillai's kindness, offered to take him to Jerusalem and provide for him there. However, Barzillai, being advanced in age, declined the offer, preferring to remain in his homeland. Instead, he recommended his servant Chimham to accompany David, who accepted and promised to show him favor (
2 Samuel 19:31-39).
Barzillai's legacy is further noted in the genealogical records of the post-exilic community. In the book of Ezra, some descendants of Barzillai are mentioned among those who returned from the Babylonian exile. These individuals had intermarried with the priestly line and adopted the name of Barzillai, their ancestor, as a mark of honor (
Ezra 2:61-63).
Barzillai's account highlights the virtues of loyalty, generosity, and humility. His support for David during a time of crisis exemplifies the steadfastness and faithfulness that are esteemed in biblical narratives. His decision to remain in his homeland rather than seek personal gain in Jerusalem reflects a contentment and satisfaction with his life and legacy. Barzillai's actions and character continue to serve as an example of godly conduct and devotion within the biblical tradition.
