Hatred: Saints should Give No Cause For

Hatred, a profound aversion or hostility, is a sentiment that the Bible consistently warns against, especially among the followers of Christ. The Scriptures emphasize that saints, as representatives of God's love and righteousness, should live in such a way that they give no cause for hatred from others. This principle is rooted in the call to live peaceably and blamelessly, reflecting the character of Christ in all interactions.

Biblical Exhortations Against Provoking Hatred

1. Living Peaceably: The Apostle Paul, in his letter to the Romans, urges believers to live in harmony with others. Romans 12:18 states, "If it is possible on your part, live at peace with everyone." This directive underscores the importance of striving for peace and avoiding actions that might incite animosity.

2. Blameless Conduct: In Philippians 2:14-15 , Paul instructs, "Do everything without complaining or arguing, so that you may be blameless and pure, children of God without fault in a crooked and perverse generation, in which you shine as lights in the world." By maintaining a blameless and pure lifestyle, saints can prevent giving others a legitimate reason to harbor hatred.

3. Gentleness and Respect: The Apostle Peter advises believers to defend their faith with gentleness and respect. 1 Peter 3:15-16 says, "But in your hearts sanctify Christ as Lord. Always be prepared to give a defense to everyone who asks you the reason for the hope that you have. But respond with gentleness and respect, keeping a clear conscience, so that those who slander you may be put to shame by your good behavior in Christ." This approach minimizes the potential for hatred by fostering respectful dialogue.

4. Avoiding Offense: Paul also addresses the need to avoid causing offense in 1 Corinthians 10:32-33 : "Do not become a stumbling block, whether to Jews or Greeks or the church of God, just as I try to please everyone in all I do, not seeking my own profit, but the profit of many, that they may be saved." By being considerate of others' perspectives and avoiding unnecessary offense, believers can reduce the likelihood of inciting hatred.

The Example of Christ

Jesus Christ serves as the ultimate example of living a life that gives no cause for hatred. Despite facing intense opposition and hatred, He remained sinless and blameless. In John 15:18-19 , Jesus reminds His followers, "If the world hates you, understand that it hated Me first. If you were of the world, it would love you as its own. Instead, the world hates you, because you are not of the world, but I have chosen you out of the world." While saints may face hatred for their association with Christ, they are called to emulate His love and righteousness, ensuring that any hatred they encounter is not due to their own wrongdoing.

Practical Application for Believers

Believers are encouraged to examine their lives and interactions to ensure they are not inadvertently causing hatred. This involves practicing humility, showing love and kindness, and being quick to forgive. Ephesians 4:31-32 advises, "Get rid of all bitterness, rage and anger, outcry and slander, along with every form of malice. Be kind and tenderhearted to one another, forgiving each other just as in Christ God forgave you." By embodying these virtues, saints can live in a manner that reflects God's love and minimizes the potential for hatred from others.
