The Glory of God: Declare
Jump to: Torrey'sLibrarySubtopicsTerms

The concept of declaring the glory of God is a central theme throughout the Bible, emphasizing the manifestation and acknowledgment of God's majesty, power, and divine nature. The glory of God is often depicted as an overwhelming presence that reveals His holiness and sovereignty, and believers are called to declare this glory to the world.

Biblical Foundation

The declaration of God's glory is rooted in the Psalms, where creation itself is described as a testament to His magnificence. Psalm 19:1 states, "The heavens declare the glory of God; the skies proclaim the work of His hands." This verse illustrates that the natural world is a continuous proclamation of God's creative power and splendor, serving as a universal witness to His existence and attributes.

In the New Testament, the call to declare God's glory is extended to believers. 1 Peter 2:9 exhorts, "But you are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people for God’s own possession, to proclaim the virtues of Him who called you out of darkness into His marvelous light." Here, the church is depicted as a community set apart to announce the excellencies of God, highlighting the transformative power of His grace and the call to live as a reflection of His light.

Manifestation of God's Glory

The glory of God is often associated with His presence and is revealed in various ways throughout Scripture. In the Old Testament, the glory of God is frequently linked with theophanies, such as the burning bush (Exodus 3:2-6) and the pillar of cloud and fire that guided the Israelites (Exodus 13:21-22). These manifestations served as tangible declarations of God's guidance and protection.

In the New Testament, the incarnation of Jesus Christ is the ultimate revelation of God's glory. John 1:14 declares, "The Word became flesh and made His dwelling among us. We have seen His glory, the glory of the one and only Son from the Father, full of grace and truth." Jesus embodies the glory of God, and His life, death, and resurrection are the supreme declaration of God's redemptive plan for humanity.

The Role of Believers

Believers are called to actively participate in declaring God's glory through worship, testimony, and righteous living. Worship is a primary means by which the glory of God is declared, as seen in Psalm 96:3 : "Declare His glory among the nations, His wonderful deeds among all peoples." Worship not only honors God but also serves as a witness to others of His greatness.

Testimony is another vital aspect of declaring God's glory. Acts 1:8 records Jesus' instruction to His disciples: "But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes upon you, and you will be My witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth." Believers are empowered by the Holy Spirit to share the message of salvation and the transformative impact of God's glory in their lives.

Righteous living is a practical declaration of God's glory, as believers are called to reflect His character in their actions. Matthew 5:16 encourages, "In the same way, let your light shine before men, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven." Through acts of love, justice, and mercy, believers demonstrate the reality of God's kingdom and His glorious nature.

Eschatological Declaration

The ultimate declaration of God's glory will occur at the end of time, when His kingdom is fully realized. Revelation 21:23 describes the New Jerusalem: "The city has no need of sun or moon to shine on it, for the glory of God illuminates it, and its lamp is the Lamb." In this eschatological vision, God's glory is the source of eternal light and life, and all creation will acknowledge His sovereignty and majesty.
