Topical Encyclopedia The Glory of GodThe concept of the glory of God is central to the biblical narrative, representing His divine majesty, holiness, and the manifestation of His presence. The Hebrew word for glory, "kavod," conveys a sense of weightiness or worthiness, while the Greek term "doxa" refers to honor and splendor. God's glory is intrinsic and eternal, reflecting His nature and attributes. In the Old Testament, the glory of God is often associated with His presence among His people. In Exodus 24:16-17, the glory of the LORD settles on Mount Sinai, appearing as a consuming fire. The tabernacle and later the temple were filled with His glory, signifying His dwelling among Israel (Exodus 40:34-35; 1 Kings 8:10-11). The prophet Isaiah had a vision of God's glory, declaring, "Holy, holy, holy is the LORD of Hosts; His glory fills the whole earth" (Isaiah 6:3). The New Testament reveals the glory of God most fully in the person of Jesus Christ. John 1:14 states, "The Word became flesh and made His dwelling among us. We have seen His glory, the glory of the one and only Son from the Father, full of grace and truth" . Jesus is the radiance of God's glory and the exact representation of His being (Hebrews 1:3). Through His life, death, and resurrection, the glory of God is displayed in redemption and the promise of eternal life. Believers are called to reflect God's glory in their lives. 1 Corinthians 10:31 instructs, "So whether you eat or drink or whatever you do, do it all to the glory of God" . The ultimate hope for Christians is to share in God's glory, as Paul writes in Romans 8:17, "And if we are children, then we are heirs: heirs of God and co-heirs with Christ—if indeed we suffer with Him, so that we may also be glorified with Him" . Human Glory In contrast to the glory of God, human glory is transient and often rooted in pride and self-exaltation. The Bible frequently warns against the pursuit of human glory, which can lead to idolatry and a departure from God's will. Psalm 49:16-17 cautions, "Do not be amazed when a man grows rich, when the splendor of his house increases. For when he dies, he will carry nothing away; his abundance will not follow him down" . The account of the Tower of Babel in Genesis 11 illustrates humanity's attempt to achieve glory apart from God, resulting in confusion and dispersion. Similarly, King Nebuchadnezzar's pride in his own glory led to his downfall until he acknowledged the sovereignty of God (Daniel 4:30-37). Jesus taught His disciples to seek God's approval rather than human praise. In Matthew 6:1, He warns, "Be careful not to perform your righteous acts before men to be seen by them. If you do, you will have no reward from your Father in heaven" . The apostle Paul echoes this sentiment in Galatians 1:10, stating, "Am I now seeking the approval of men, or of God? Or am I striving to please men? If I were still trying to please men, I would not be a servant of Christ" . Human glory is fleeting, but those who humble themselves before God will be exalted in due time (1 Peter 5:6). The pursuit of God's glory leads to true fulfillment and eternal reward, as believers are transformed into the image of Christ "from glory to glory" (2 Corinthians 3:18).
