Zeal: Ungodly Men Sometimes Pretend To
Jump to: Torrey'sLibrarySubtopicsTerms

In the biblical context, zeal is often associated with fervent devotion and passionate commitment to God and His commandments. However, Scripture also warns of instances where ungodly men feign zeal for ulterior motives, using it as a guise to further their own agendas or to deceive others.

Biblical Examples:

1. Jehu's Deceptive Zeal: One of the most illustrative examples of pretended zeal is found in the account of Jehu, who was anointed king of Israel and tasked with eradicating the house of Ahab and the worship of Baal. In 2 Kings 10:16, Jehu declares, "Come with me and see my zeal for the LORD." While Jehu did fulfill God's command to destroy Ahab's lineage and the Baal worshipers, his actions were also driven by personal ambition and a desire for power. His zeal was not purely for the Lord, as evidenced by his subsequent failure to turn away from the sins of Jeroboam (2 Kings 10:29-31).

2. The Pharisees: In the New Testament, the Pharisees are often depicted as religious leaders who exhibit a form of zeal for the law. However, Jesus frequently rebukes them for their hypocrisy and for prioritizing human traditions over God's commandments. In Matthew 23:27-28, Jesus says, "Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, you hypocrites! You are like whitewashed tombs, which look beautiful on the outside but on the inside are full of dead men’s bones and every kind of impurity. In the same way, on the outside you appear to be righteous, but on the inside you are full of hypocrisy and wickedness." Their zeal was more about maintaining their status and control rather than genuine devotion to God.

3. Simon the Sorcerer: In Acts 8:9-24, Simon the Sorcerer is another example of someone who pretended zeal for the things of God. After witnessing the apostles perform miracles, Simon offered them money, saying, "Give me this power as well, so that everyone on whom I lay my hands may receive the Holy Spirit" (Acts 8:19). His desire for spiritual power was not rooted in a true zeal for God but in a selfish ambition to enhance his own influence.

Characteristics of Pretended Zeal:

· Self-Serving Motives: Unlike genuine zeal, which seeks to honor God and advance His kingdom, pretended zeal is often driven by personal gain, power, or recognition.

· Hypocrisy: Those who feign zeal may outwardly display religious fervor, but their hearts are far from God. Their actions are inconsistent with the true spirit of the law and the teachings of Christ.

· Manipulation: Pretended zeal can be used as a tool to manipulate others, drawing them into false teachings or practices under the guise of religious devotion.

Warnings and Exhortations:

The Bible warns believers to be discerning and cautious of those who exhibit a false zeal. In Romans 10:2, Paul speaks of the Israelites, saying, "For I testify about them that they are zealous for God, but not on the basis of knowledge." This highlights the importance of aligning zeal with true knowledge and understanding of God's will.

Furthermore, believers are encouraged to cultivate a sincere and genuine zeal for the Lord. In Romans 12:11, Paul exhorts, "Do not let your zeal subside; keep your spiritual fervor, serving the Lord." True zeal is characterized by humility, love, and a desire to glorify God above all else.
