Saul’s Overthrow and Death
(2 Samuel 1:1–16; 1 Chronicles 10:1–6)

1  וּפְלִשְׁתִּ֖ים (And the Philistines) נִלְחָמִ֣ים (fought) בְּיִשְׂרָאֵ֑ל (against Israel), וַיָּנֻ֜סוּ (and fled) אַנְשֵׁ֤י (the men) יִשְׂרָאֵל֙ (of Israel) מִפְּנֵ֣י (from before) פְלִשְׁתִּ֔ים (the Philistines) וַיִּפְּל֥וּ (and fell) חֲלָלִ֖ים (slain) בְּהַ֥ר (on Mount) הַגִּלְבֹּֽעַ׃ (Gilboa).

2  וַיַּדְבְּק֣וּ (And followed hard after) פְלִשְׁתִּ֔ים (the Philistines) אֶת־ (-) שָׁא֖וּל (Saul) וְאֶת־ (and) בָּנָ֑יו (his sons). וַיַּכּ֣וּ (And killed) פְלִשְׁתִּ֗ים (the Philistines) אֶת־ (-) יְהוֹנָתָ֧ן (Jonathan) וְאֶת־ (and) אֲבִינָדָ֛ב (Abinadab) וְאֶת־ (and) מַלְכִּי־ (Malchi-) שׁ֖וּעַ (shua), בְּנֵ֥י (the sons) שָׁאֽוּל׃ (of Saul). 3  וַתִּכְבַּ֤ד (And became fierce) הַמִּלְחָמָה֙ (the battle) אֶל־ (against) שָׁא֔וּל (Saul), וַיִּמְצָאֻ֥הוּ (found him) הַמּוֹרִ֖ים (the archers) אֲנָשִׁ֣ים (a man) בַּקָּ֑שֶׁת (with the bow), וַיָּ֥חֶל (and he was wounded) מְאֹ֖ד (severely) מֵהַמּוֹרִֽים׃ (by the archers).

4  וַיֹּ֣אמֶר (And said) שָׁאוּל֩ (Saul) לְנֹשֵׂ֨א (to the bearer) כֵלָ֜יו (of his armor), שְׁלֹ֥ף (Draw) חַרְבְּךָ֣׀ (your sword) וְדָקְרֵ֣נִי (and thrust me through) בָ֗הּ (with it), פֶּן־ (lest) יָ֠בוֹאוּ (come) הָעֲרֵלִ֨ים (the uncircumcised) הָאֵ֤לֶּה (these) וּדְקָרֻ֙נִי֙ (and thrust me through) וְהִתְעַלְּלוּ־ (and torture) בִ֔י (me).

וְלֹ֤א (Not) אָבָה֙ (was willing) נֹשֵׂ֣א (the bearer) כֵלָ֔יו (of his armor), כִּ֥י (for) יָרֵ֖א (he was afraid) מְאֹ֑ד (greatly). וַיִּקַּ֤ח (And took) שָׁאוּל֙ (Saul) אֶת־ (-) הַחֶ֔רֶב (a sword) וַיִּפֹּ֖ל (and fell) עָלֶֽיהָ׃ (on it).

5  וַיַּ֥רְא (And saw) נֹשֵֽׂא־ (the bearer) כֵלָ֖יו (of his armor) כִּ֣י (that) מֵ֣ת (was dead) שָׁא֑וּל (Saul), וַיִּפֹּ֥ל (and he fell) גַּם־ (also) ה֛וּא (he) עַל־ (on) חַרְבּ֖וֹ (his sword), וַיָּ֥מָת (and he died) עִמּֽוֹ׃ (with him).

6  וַיָּ֣מָת (And died) שָׁא֡וּל (Saul), וּשְׁלֹ֣שֶׁת (and three) בָּנָיו֩ (his sons), וְנֹשֵׂ֨א (and the bearer) כֵלָ֜יו (of his armor), גַּ֧ם (and) כָּל־ (all) אֲנָשָׁ֛יו (his men), בַּיּ֥וֹם (the day) הַה֖וּא (that) יַחְדָּֽו׃ (together).

The Philistines Possess the Towns
(1 Chronicles 10:7–10)

7  וַיִּרְא֣וּ (And they saw) אַנְשֵֽׁי־ (the men) יִ֠שְׂרָאֵל (of Israel) אֲשֶׁר־ (who were) בְּעֵ֨בֶר (on the other side) הָעֵ֜מֶק (of the valley), וַאֲשֶׁ֣ר׀ (and who) בְּעֵ֣בֶר (were beyond) הַיַּרְדֵּ֗ן (of the Jordan), כִּֽי־ (that) נָ֙סוּ֙ (had fled) אַנְשֵׁ֣י (the men) יִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל (of Israel), וְכִי־ (and that) מֵ֖תוּ (were dead) שָׁא֣וּל (Saul) וּבָנָ֑יו (and his sons). וַיַּעַזְב֤וּ (And they forsook) אֶת־ (-) הֶֽעָרִים֙ (the cities) וַיָּנֻ֔סוּ (and fled). וַיָּבֹ֣אוּ (And came) פְלִשְׁתִּ֔ים (the Philistines) וַיֵּֽשְׁב֖וּ (and dwelt) בָּהֶֽן׃ס (in them).

8  וַֽיְהִי֙ (And it came to pass) מִֽמָּחֳרָ֔ת (the next day), וַיָּבֹ֣אוּ (and came) פְלִשְׁתִּ֔ים (the Philistines) לְפַשֵּׁ֖ט (to strip) אֶת־ (-) הַחֲלָלִ֑ים (the slain), וַֽיִּמְצְא֤וּ (that they found) אֶת־ (-) שָׁאוּל֙ (Saul) וְאֶת־ (and) שְׁלֹ֣שֶׁת (three) בָּנָ֔יו (his sons) נֹפְלִ֖ים (fallen) בְּהַ֥ר (on Mount) הַגִּלְבֹּֽעַ׃ (Gilboa). 9  וַֽיִּכְרְתוּ֙ (And they cut off) אֶת־ (-) רֹאשׁ֔וֹ (his head) וַיַּפְשִׁ֖יטוּ (and stripped off) אֶת־ (-) כֵּלָ֑יו (his armor), וַיְשַׁלְּח֨וּ (and they sent) בְאֶֽרֶץ־ (into the land) פְּלִשְׁתִּ֜ים (of the Philistines) סָבִ֗יב (all around), לְבַשֵּׂ֛ר (to proclaim it) בֵּ֥ית (in the temple) עֲצַבֵּיהֶ֖ם (of their idols) וְאֶת־ (and among) הָעָֽם׃ (the people). 10  וַיָּשִׂ֙מוּ֙ (And they put) אֶת־ (-) כֵּלָ֔יו (his armor) בֵּ֖ית (in the temple) עַשְׁתָּר֑וֹת (of the Ashtoreths), וְאֶת־ (and) גְּוִיָּתוֹ֙ (his body) תָּקְע֔וּ (they fastened) בְּחוֹמַ֖ת (to the wall) בֵּ֥ית (of Beth-) שָֽׁן׃ (shan).

Jabesh-gilead’s Tribute to Saul
(1 Chronicles 10:11–14)

11  וַיִּשְׁמְע֣וּ (And heard) אֵלָ֔יו (about it) יֹשְׁבֵ֖י (those dwelling) יָבֵ֣ישׁ (in Jabesh-) גִּלְעָ֑ד (gilead) אֵ֛ת (-) אֲשֶׁר־ (what) עָשׂ֥וּ (had done) פְלִשְׁתִּ֖ים (the Philistines) לְשָׁאֽוּל׃ (to Saul), 12  וַיָּק֜וּמוּ (and arose) כָּל־ (all) אִ֣ישׁ (the men) חַיִל֮ (valiant) וַיֵּלְכ֣וּ (and traveled) כָל־ (all) הַלַּיְלָה֒ (the night), וַיִּקְח֞וּ (and they took) אֶת־ (-) גְּוִיַּ֣ת (the body) שָׁא֗וּל (of Saul) וְאֵת֙ (and) גְּוִיֹּ֣ת (the bodies) בָּנָ֔יו (of his sons) מֵחוֹמַ֖ת (from the wall) בֵּ֣ית (of Beth-) שָׁ֑ן (shan).

וַיָּבֹ֣אוּ (And they came) יָבֵ֔שָׁה (to Jabesh) וַיִּשְׂרְפ֥וּ (and burned) אֹתָ֖ם (them) שָֽׁם׃ (there). 13  וַיִּקְחוּ֙ (And they took) אֶת־ (-) עַצְמֹ֣תֵיהֶ֔ם (their bones) וַיִּקְבְּר֥וּ (and buried them) תַֽחַת־ (under) הָאֶ֖שֶׁל (the tamarisk tree) בְּיָבֵ֑שָׁה (at Jabesh), וַיָּצֻ֖מוּ (and they fasted) שִׁבְעַ֥ת (seven) יָמִֽים׃פ (days).
