The Ark Enters the Temple
(1 Kings 8:1–11)

1  וַתִּשְׁלַם֙ (And was finished). כָּל־ (All) הַמְּלָאכָ֔ה (the work) אֲשֶׁר־ (that) עָשָׂ֥ה (had done) שְׁלֹמֹ֖ה (Solomon) לְבֵ֣ית (for the house) יְהוָ֑הס (of YHWH).

וַיָּבֵ֨א (And brought in) שְׁלֹמֹ֜ה (Solomon) אֶת־ (-) קָדְשֵׁ֣י׀ (the holy things) דָּוִ֣יד (of David) אָבִ֗יו (his father), וְאֶת־ (and) הַכֶּ֤סֶף (the silver), וְאֶת־ (and) הַזָּהָב֙ (the gold), וְאֶת־ (and) כָּל־ (all) הַכֵּלִ֔ים (the furnishings), נָתַ֕ן (and he put them) בְּאֹצְר֖וֹת (in the treasuries) בֵּ֥ית (of the house) הָאֱלֹהִֽים׃פ (of God).

2  אָז֩ (At that time) יַקְהֵ֨יל (assembled) שְׁלֹמֹ֜ה (Solomon) אֶת־ (-) זִקְנֵ֣י (the elders) יִשְׂרָאֵ֗ל (of Israel), וְאֶת־ (and) כָּל־ (all) רָאשֵׁ֨י (the heads) הַמַּטּ֜וֹת (of the tribes), נְשִׂיאֵ֧י (chiefs), הָאָב֛וֹת (the fathers) לִבְנֵ֥י (of the sons) יִשְׂרָאֵ֖ל (of Israel), אֶל־ (in) יְרוּשָׁלִָ֑ם (Jerusalem), לְֽהַעֲל֞וֹת (to bring up) אֶת־ (-) אֲר֧וֹן (the ark) בְּרִית־ (of the covenant) יְהוָ֛ה (of YHWH) מֵעִ֥יר (from the City) דָּוִ֖יד (of David); הִ֥יא (it is) צִיּֽוֹן׃ (Zion). 3  וַיִּקָּהֲל֧וּ (And assembled) אֶל־ (unto) הַמֶּ֛לֶךְ (the king) כָּל־ (all) אִ֥ישׁ (the men) יִשְׂרָאֵ֖ל (of Israel) בֶּחָ֑ג (at the feast); ה֖וּא (it was) הַחֹ֥דֶשׁ (the month) הַשְּׁבִעִֽי׃ (seventh).

4  וַיָּבֹ֕אוּ (And came) כֹּ֖ל (all) זִקְנֵ֣י (the elders) יִשְׂרָאֵ֑ל (of Israel), וַיִּשְׂא֥וּ (and took up) הַלְוִיִּ֖ם (the Levites) אֶת־ (-) הָאָרֽוֹן׃ (the ark). 5  וַיַּעֲל֤וּ (And they brought up) אֶת־ (-) הָאָרוֹן֙ (the ark), וְאֶת־ (and) אֹ֣הֶל (the Tent) מוֹעֵ֔ד (of Meeting), וְאֶת־ (and) כָּל־ (all) כְּלֵ֥י (vessels) הַקֹּ֖דֶשׁ (the holy) אֲשֶׁ֣ר (that were) בָּאֹ֑הֶל (in the tabernacle). הֶעֱל֣וּ (Brought up) אֹתָ֔ם (them) הַכֹּהֲנִ֖ים (the priests), הַלְוִיִּֽם׃ (the Levites).

6  וְהַמֶּ֣לֶךְ (And King) שְׁלֹמֹ֗ה (Solomon) וְכָל־ (and all) עֲדַ֧ת (the congregation) יִשְׂרָאֵ֛ל (of Israel) הַנּוֹעָדִ֥ים (who were assembled) עָלָ֖יו (with him) לִפְנֵ֣י (before) הָאָר֑וֹן (the ark) מְזַבְּחִים֙ (were sacrificing) צֹ֣אן (sheep) וּבָקָ֔ר (and oxen) אֲשֶׁ֧ר (that) לֹֽא־ (not) יִסָּפְר֛וּ (could be counted) וְלֹ֥א (and not) יִמָּנ֖וּ (numbered) מֵרֹֽב׃ (for multitude).

7  וַיָּבִ֣יאוּ (And brought in) הַ֠כֹּהֲנִים (the priests) אֶת־ (-) אֲר֨וֹן (the ark) בְּרִית־ (of the covenant) יְהוָ֧ה (of YHWH) אֶל־ (to) מְקוֹמ֛וֹ (its place), אֶל־ (into) דְּבִ֥יר (the inner sanctuary) הַבַּ֖יִת (of the house), אֶל־ (to) קֹ֣דֶשׁ (the Holy) הַקְּדָשִׁ֑ים (of Holies) אֶל־ (to) תַּ֖חַת (beneath) כַּנְפֵ֥י (the wings) הַכְּרוּבִֽים׃ (of the cherubim). 8  וַיִּהְי֤וּ (And were) הַכְּרוּבִים֙ (the cherubim) פֹּרְשִׂ֣ים (spreading out) כְּנָפַ֔יִם (wings) עַל־ (over) מְק֖וֹם (the place) הָאָר֑וֹן (of the ark), וַיְכַסּ֧וּ (and covered) הַכְּרוּבִ֛ים (the cherubim) עַל־ (over) הָאָר֥וֹן (the ark) וְעַל־ (and) בַּדָּ֖יו (its poles) מִלְמָֽעְלָה׃ (from above).

9  וַֽיַּאֲרִיכוּ֮ (And extended) הַבַּדִּים֒ (the poles), וַיֵּרָאוּ֩ (and were seen) רָאשֵׁ֨י (the ends) הַבַּדִּ֤ים (of the poles) מִן־ (of) הָאָרוֹן֙ (the ark) עַל־ (from) פְּנֵ֣י (in front) הַדְּבִ֔יר (of the inner sanctuary); וְלֹ֥א (not) יֵרָא֖וּ (they could be seen) הַח֑וּצָה (from outside). וַֽיְהִי־ (And they are) שָׁ֔ם (there) עַ֖ד (to) הַיּ֥וֹם (the day) הַזֶּֽה׃ (this).

10  אֵ֚ין (Nothing was) בָּֽאָר֔וֹן (in the ark) רַ֚ק (except) שְׁנֵ֣י (two) הַלֻּח֔וֹת (the tablets) אֲשֶׁר־ (that) נָתַ֥ן (gave) מֹשֶׁ֖ה (Moses) בְּחֹרֵ֑ב (at Horeb), אֲשֶׁ֨ר (when) כָּרַ֤ת (cut) יְהוָה֙ (YHWH) עִם־ (with) בְּנֵ֣י (the sons) יִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל (of Israel) בְּצֵאתָ֖ם (in their going out) מִמִּצְרָֽיִם׃פ (from Egypt).

11  וַיְהִ֕י (And it came to pass) בְּצֵ֥את (in the going out) הַכֹּהֲנִ֖ים (of the priests) מִן־ (from) הַקֹּ֑דֶשׁ (the sanctuary)— כִּ֠י (for) כָּל־ (all) הַכֹּהֲנִ֤ים (the priests) הַֽנִּמְצְאִים֙ (who present) הִתְקַדָּ֔שׁוּ (had sanctified themselves) אֵ֖ין (without) לִשְׁמ֥וֹר (keeping) לְמַחְלְקֽוֹת׃ (to their divisions), 12  וְהַלְוִיִּ֣ם (and the Levites), הַמְשֹׁרֲרִ֣ים (the singers) לְכֻלָּ֡ם (all those) לְאָסָ֡ף (of Asaph) לְהֵימָ֣ן (and Heman) לִֽ֠ידֻתוּן (and Jeduthun), וְלִבְנֵיהֶ֨ם (and with their sons) וְלַאֲחֵיהֶ֜ם (and their brothers) מְלֻבָּשִׁ֣ים (clothed) בּ֗וּץ (in white linen), בִּמְצִלְתַּ֙יִם֙ (having cymbals) וּבִנְבָלִ֣ים (and stringed instruments) וְכִנֹּר֔וֹת (and harps)) עֹמְדִ֖ים (stood) מִזְרָ֣ח (on the east) לַמִּזְבֵּ֑חַ (of the altar), וְעִמָּהֶ֤ם (and with them) כֹּֽהֲנִים֙ (priests) לְמֵאָ֣ה (a hundred) וְעֶשְׂרִ֔ים (and twenty) מַחְצְרִרִים (sounding) בַּחֲצֹֽצְרֽוֹת׃ (with the trumpets)— 13  וַיְהִ֣י (and it came to pass), כְ֠אֶחָד (as one were) לַמַּחֲצֹצְרִים (the trumpeters) וְלַמְשֹֽׁרֲרִ֜ים (and the singers) לְהַשְׁמִ֣יעַ (to sound) קוֹל־ (voice) אֶחָ֗ד (one) לְהַלֵּ֣ל (in praising) וּלְהֹדוֹת֮ (and thanking) לַיהוָה֒ (YHWH). וּכְהָרִ֣ים (And they lifted up) ק֠וֹל (a voice) בַּחֲצֹצְר֨וֹת (with the trumpets) וּבִמְצִלְתַּ֜יִם (and cymbals) וּבִכְלֵ֣י (and instruments) הַשִּׁ֗יר (of music), וּבְהַלֵּ֤ל (and praised) לַיהוָה֙ (YHWH):

כִּ֣י (For) ט֔וֹב (good), כִּ֥י (even to) לְעוֹלָ֖ם (forever)

חַסְדּ֑וֹ (is His loving devotion),

וְהַבַּ֛יִת (and the house) מָלֵ֥א (was filled) עָנָ֖ן (with a cloud)— בֵּ֥ית (the house) יְהוָֽה׃ (of YHWH)— 14  וְלֹא־ (and not) יָֽכְל֧וּ (could) הַכֹּהֲנִ֛ים (the priests) לַעֲמ֥וֹד (continue) לְשָׁרֵ֖ת (ministering) מִפְּנֵ֣י (because) הֶעָנָ֑ן (of the cloud), כִּֽי־ (for) מָלֵ֥א (had filled) כְבוֹד־ (the glory) יְהוָ֖ה (of YHWH) אֶת־ (-) בֵּ֥ית (the house) הָאֱלֹהִֽים׃פ (of God).
