Solomon Blesses Yahweh
(1 Kings 8:12–21)

1  אָ֖ז (Then) אָמַ֣ר (said) שְׁלֹמֹ֑ה (Solomon):

יְהוָ֣ה (YHWH) אָמַ֔ר (said) לִשְׁכּ֖וֹן (He would dwell)

בָּעֲרָפֶֽל׃ (in the dark cloud).

2  וַֽאֲנִ֛י (And I) בָּנִ֥יתִי (have surely built) בֵית־ (a house) זְבֻ֖ל (exalted) לָ֑ךְ (unto You),

וּמָכ֥וֹן (and a place) לְשִׁבְתְּךָ֖ (for Your dwelling) עוֹלָמִֽים׃ (forever).

3  וַיַּסֵּ֤ב (And turned around) הַמֶּ֙לֶךְ֙ (the king) אֶת־ (-) פָּנָ֔יו (his face), וַיְבָ֕רֶךְ (and he blessed) אֵ֖ת (-) כָּל־ (all) קְהַ֣ל (the assembly) יִשְׂרָאֵ֑ל (of Israel), וְכָל־ (and all) קְהַ֥ל (the assembly) יִשְׂרָאֵ֖ל (of Israel) עוֹמֵֽד׃ (was standing). 4  וַיֹּ֗אמֶר (And he said):

בָּר֤וּךְ (Blessed be) יְהוָה֙ (YHWH) אֱלֹהֵ֣י (God) יִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל (of Israel), אֲשֶׁר֙ (who) דִּבֶּ֣ר (has spoken) בְּפִ֔יו (with His mouth) אֵ֖ת (to) דָּוִ֣יד (David) אָבִ֑י (my father), וּבְיָדָ֥יו (and with His hands) מִלֵּ֖א (He has fulfilled it), לֵאמֹֽר׃ (saying), 5  מִן־ (Since) הַיּ֗וֹם (the day) אֲשֶׁ֨ר (that) הוֹצֵ֣אתִי (I brought) אֶת־ (-) עַמִּי֮ (My people) מֵאֶ֣רֶץ (out of the land) מִצְרַיִם֒ (of Egypt), לֹא־ (not) בָחַ֣רְתִּֽי (have I chosen) בְעִ֗יר (a city) מִכֹּל֙ (from any) שִׁבְטֵ֣י (tribe) יִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל (of Israel) לִבְנ֣וֹת (in which to build) בַּ֔יִת (a house) לִהְי֥וֹת (being) שְׁמִ֖י (for My name) שָׁ֑ם (there), וְלֹא־ (and not) בָחַ֣רְתִּֽי (have I chosen) בְאִ֔ישׁ (any man) לִהְי֥וֹת (to be) נָגִ֖יד (a ruler) עַל־ (over) עַמִּ֥י (My people) יִשְׂרָאֵֽל׃ (Israel). 6  וָאֶבְחַר֙ (And I have chosen) בִּיר֣וּשָׁלִַ֔ם (Jerusalem), לִהְי֥וֹת (for to be) שְׁמִ֖י (my name) שָׁ֑ם (there), וָאֶבְחַ֣ר (and I have chosen) בְּדָוִ֔יד (David) לִהְי֖וֹת (to be) עַל־ (over) עַמִּ֥י (My people) יִשְׂרָאֵֽל׃ (Israel).

7  וַיְהִ֕י (And it was) עִם־ (with) לְבַ֖ב (the heart) דָּוִ֣יד (of David) אָבִ֑י (my father) לִבְנ֣וֹת (to build) בַּ֔יִת (a temple) לְשֵׁ֥ם (for the Name) יְהוָ֖ה (of YHWH) אֱלֹהֵ֥י (God) יִשְׂרָאֵֽל׃ (of Israel). 8  וַיֹּ֤אמֶר (And said) יְהוָה֙ (YHWH) אֶל־ (to) דָּוִ֣יד (David) אָבִ֔י (my father), יַ֗עַן (Because) אֲשֶׁ֤ר (that) הָיָה֙ (it was) עִם־ (with) לְבָ֣בְךָ֔ (your heart) לִבְנ֥וֹת (to build) בַּ֖יִת (a house) לִשְׁמִ֑י (for My name), הֱ‍ֽטִיב֔וֹתָ (you did well) כִּ֥י (in that) הָיָ֖ה (it was) עִם־ (with) לְבָבֶֽךָ׃ (your heart). 9  רַ֣ק (Nevertheless) אַתָּ֔ה (you) לֹ֥א (not) תִבְנֶ֖ה (shall build) הַבָּ֑יִת (the temple); כִּ֤י (but) בִנְךָ֙ (your son) הַיּוֹצֵ֣א (who will come) מֵֽחֲלָצֶ֔יךָ (from your loins), הֽוּא־ (he) יִבְנֶ֥ה (shall build) הַבַּ֖יִת (the house) לִשְׁמִֽי׃ (for My Name).

10  וַיָּ֣קֶם (And has fulfilled) יְהוָ֔ה (YHWH) אֶת־ (-) דְּבָר֖וֹ (His word) אֲשֶׁ֣ר (that) דִּבֵּ֑ר (He spoke), וָאָק֡וּם (and I have risen) תַּחַת֩ (instead) דָּוִ֨יד (of David) אָבִ֜י (my father) וָאֵשֵׁ֣ב׀ (and sit) עַל־ (on) כִּסֵּ֣א (the throne) יִשְׂרָאֵ֗ל (of Israel), כַּאֲשֶׁר֙ (as) דִּבֶּ֣ר (spoke) יְהוָ֔ה (YHWH), וָאֶבְנֶ֣ה (and I have built) הַבַּ֔יִת (the house) לְשֵׁ֥ם (for the name) יְהוָ֖ה (of YHWH) אֱלֹהֵ֥י (God) יִשְׂרָאֵֽל׃ (of Israel). 11  וָאָשִׂ֥ים (And I have put) שָׁם֙ (there) אֶת־ (-) הָ֣אָר֔וֹן (the ark) אֲשֶׁר־ (in which) שָׁ֖ם (there is) בְּרִ֣ית (the covenant) יְהוָ֑ה (of YHWH) אֲשֶׁ֥ר (which) כָּרַ֖ת (He cut) עִם־ (with) בְּנֵ֥י (the sons) יִשְׂרָאֵֽל׃ (of Israel).

Solomon’s Prayer of Dedication
(1 Kings 8:22–53)

12  וַֽיַּעֲמֹ֗ד (And he stood) לִפְנֵי֙ (before the face of) מִזְבַּ֣ח (the altar) יְהוָ֔ה (of YHWH) נֶ֖גֶד (in front) כָּל־ (of all) קְהַ֣ל (the assembly) יִשְׂרָאֵ֑ל (of Israel) וַיִּפְרֹ֖שׂ (and spread out) כַּפָּֽיו׃ (his hands). 13  כִּֽי־ (For) עָשָׂ֨ה (had made) שְׁלֹמֹ֜ה (Solomon) כִּיּ֣וֹר (a platform) נְחֹ֗שֶׁת (bronze), וַֽיִּתְּנֵהוּ֮ (and had set it) בְּת֣וֹךְ (in the midst) הָעֲזָרָה֒ (of the court): חָמֵ֨שׁ (Five) אַמּ֜וֹת (cubits) אָרְכּ֗וֹ (long), וְחָמֵ֤שׁ (and five) אַמּוֹת֙ (cubits) רָחְבּ֔וֹ (wide), וְאַמּ֥וֹת (and cubits) שָׁל֖וֹשׁ (three) קוֹמָת֑וֹ (high). וַיַּעֲמֹ֣ד (And he stood) עָלָ֗יו (on it) וַיִּבְרַ֤ךְ (and he knelt down) עַל־ (on) בִּרְכָּיו֙ (his knees) נֶ֚גֶד (before) כָּל־ (all) קְהַ֣ל (the assembly) יִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל (of Israel) וַיִּפְרֹ֥שׂ (and he spread out) כַּפָּ֖יו (his hands) הַשָּׁמָֽיְמָה׃ (toward the heavens), 14  וַיֹּאמַ֗ר (and he said):

יְהוָ֞ה (O YHWH) אֱלֹהֵ֤י (God) יִשְׂרָאֵל֙ (of Israel), אֵין־ (there is not) כָּמ֣וֹךָ (like You) אֱלֹהִ֔ים (a god) בַּשָּׁמַ֖יִם (in the heavens) וּבָאָ֑רֶץ (or on the earth), שֹׁמֵ֤ר (who keeps) הַבְּרִית֙ (the covenant) וְֽהַחֶ֔סֶד (and of loving devotion) לַעֲבָדֶ֕יךָ (with Your servants) הַהֹלְכִ֥ים (walking) לְפָנֶ֖יךָ (before You) בְּכָל־ (with all) לִבָּֽם׃ (their hearts), 15  אֲשֶׁ֣ר (who) שָׁמַ֗רְתָּ (have kept) לְעַבְדְּךָ֙ (for Your servant) דָּוִ֣יד (David) אָבִ֔י (my father) אֵ֥ת (-) אֲשֶׁר־ (what) דִּבַּ֖רְתָּ (You dpoke) ל֑וֹ (to him). וַתְּדַבֵּ֥ר (And You have spoken) בְּפִ֛יךָ (with Your mouth) וּבְיָדְךָ֥ (and with Your hand) מִלֵּ֖אתָ (you have fulfilled it), כַּיּ֥וֹם (as the day) הַזֶּֽה׃ (this).

16  וְעַתָּ֞ה (And now), יְהוָ֣ה׀ (O YHWH) אֱלֹהֵ֣י (God) יִשְׂרָאֵ֗ל (of Israel), שְׁ֠מֹר (keep) לְעַבְדְּךָ֨ (for Your servant) דָוִ֤יד (David) אָבִי֙ (my father) אֵת֩ (-) אֲשֶׁ֨ר (what) דִּבַּ֤רְתָּ (You spoke) לּוֹ֙ (to him), לֵאמֹ֔ר (saying), לֹא־ (Not) יִכָּרֵ֨ת (shall fail to have) לְךָ֥ (you) אִישׁ֙ (a man) מִלְּפָנַ֔י (before Me) יוֹשֵׁ֖ב (to sit) עַל־ (on) כִּסֵּ֣א (the throne) יִשְׂרָאֵ֑ל (of Israel), רַ֠ק (only) אִם־ (if) יִשְׁמְר֨וּ (take heed) בָנֶ֜יךָ (your sons) אֶת־ (-) דַּרְכָּ֗ם (to their way) לָלֶ֙כֶת֙ (to walk) בְּת֣וֹרָתִ֔י (in My law), כַּאֲשֶׁ֥ר (as) הָלַ֖כְתָּ (you have walked) לְפָנָֽי׃ (before My face). 17  וְעַתָּ֕ה (And) יְהוָ֖ה (O YHWH) אֱלֹהֵ֣י (God) יִשְׂרָאֵ֑ל (of Israel), יֵֽאָמֵן֙ (confirm) דְּבָ֣רְךָ֔ (Your word) אֲשֶׁ֥ר (that) דִּבַּ֖רְתָּ (You have spoken) לְעַבְדְּךָ֥ (to Your servant) לְדָוִֽיד׃ (David).

18  כִּ֚י (But) הַֽאֻמְנָ֔ם (will indeed) יֵשֵׁ֧ב (dwell) אֱלֹהִ֛ים (God) אֶת־ (with) הָאָדָ֖ם (men) עַל־ (on) הָאָ֑רֶץ (the earth)? הִ֠נֵּה (Behold), שָׁמַ֜יִם (the heavens) וּשְׁמֵ֤י (and the heavens) הַשָּׁמַ֙יִם֙ (of the heavens) לֹ֣א (not) יְכַלְכְּל֔וּךָ (can contain You), אַ֕ף (how much) כִּֽי־ (less) הַבַּ֥יִת (the house) הַזֶּ֖ה (this) אֲשֶׁ֥ר (that) בָּנִֽיתִי׃ (I have built)! 19  וּפָנִ֜יתָ (And You have turned) אֶל־ (toward) תְּפִלַּ֧ת (the prayer) עַבְדְּךָ֛ (of Your servant) וְאֶל־ (and) תְּחִנָּת֖וֹ (his supplication), יְהוָ֣ה (O YHWH) אֱלֹהָ֑י (my God), לִשְׁמֹ֤עַ (to listen) אֶל־ (to) הָרִנָּה֙ (the cry) וְאֶל־ (and) הַתְּפִלָּ֔ה (the prayer) אֲשֶׁ֥ר (that) עַבְדְּךָ֖ (Your servant) מִתְפַּלֵּ֥ל (is praying) לְפָנֶֽיךָ׃ (before You).

20  לִהְיוֹת֩ (For may be) עֵינֶ֨יךָ (Your eyes) פְתֻח֜וֹת (open) אֶל־ (toward) הַבַּ֤יִת (the house) הַזֶּה֙ (this) יוֹמָ֣ם (day) וָלַ֔יְלָה (and night), אֶל־ (toward) הַ֨מָּק֔וֹם (the place) אֲשֶׁ֣ר (where) אָמַ֔רְתָּ (You have said) לָשׂ֥וּם (to put) שִׁמְךָ֖ (Your name) שָׁ֑ם (there), לִשְׁמ֙וֹעַ֙ (that You may listen) אֶל־ (to) הַתְּפִלָּ֔ה (the prayer) אֲשֶׁ֣ר (that) יִתְפַּלֵּ֣ל (prays) עַבְדְּךָ֔ (Your servant) אֶל־ (toward) הַמָּק֖וֹם (the place) הַזֶּֽה׃ (this). 21  וְשָׁ֨מַעְתָּ֜ (And may You listen) אֶל־ (to) תַּחֲנוּנֵ֤י (the supplications) עַבְדְּךָ֙ (of Your servant) וְעַמְּךָ֣ (and of Your people) יִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל (Israel) אֲשֶׁ֥ר (when) יִֽתְפַּֽלְל֖וּ (they pray) אֶל־ (toward) הַמָּק֣וֹם (the place) הַזֶּ֑ה (this), וְ֠אַתָּה (and may You) תִּשְׁמַ֞ע (hear) מִמְּק֤וֹם (the place) שִׁבְתְּךָ֙ (Your dwelling) מִן־ (from) הַשָּׁמַ֔יִם (the heavens), וְשָׁמַעְתָּ֖ (and may You hear) וְסָלָֽחְתָּ׃ (and forgive).

22  אִם־ (If) יֶחֱטָ֥א (sins) אִישׁ֙ (anyone) לְרֵעֵ֔הוּ (against his neighbor), וְנָֽשָׁא־ (and it is lifted up) ב֥וֹ (upon him) אָלָ֖ה (to take an oath), לְהַֽאֲלֹת֑וֹ (to swear) וּבָ֗א (and he comes in) אָלָ֛ה (to swear) לִפְנֵ֥י (before) מִֽזְבַּחֲךָ֖ (Your altar) בַּבַּ֥יִת (in the house) הַזֶּֽה׃ (this), 23  וְאַתָּ֣ה׀ (then may You) תִּשְׁמַ֣ע (hear) מִן־ (from) הַשָּׁמַ֗יִם (the heavens) וְעָשִׂ֙יתָ֙ (and act) וְשָׁפַטְתָּ֣ (and judge) אֶת־ (-) עֲבָדֶ֔יךָ (Your servants), לְהָשִׁ֣יב (to give back) לְרָשָׁ֔ע (to the wicked) לָתֵ֥ת (by bringing) דַּרְכּ֖וֹ (his way) בְּרֹאשׁ֑וֹ (on his own head), וּלְהַצְדִּ֣יק (and to justify) צַדִּ֔יק (the righteous) לָ֥תֶת (by giving) ל֖וֹ (to him) כְּצִדְקָתֽוֹ׃ס (according to his righteousness).

24  וְֽאִם־ (And if) יִנָּגֵ֞ף (are struck) עַמְּךָ֧ (Your people) יִשְׂרָאֵ֛ל (Israel) לִפְנֵ֥י (before) אוֹיֵ֖ב (an enemy) כִּ֣י (because) יֶֽחֶטְאוּ־ (they have sinned) לָ֑ךְ (against You), וְשָׁ֙בוּ֙ (and they return) וְהוֹד֣וּ (and confess) אֶת־ (-) שְׁמֶ֔ךָ (Your name), וְהִתְפַּֽלְל֧וּ (and they pray) וְהִֽתְחַנְּנ֛וּ (and make supplication) לְפָנֶ֖יךָ (before You) בַּבַּ֥יִת (in the house) הַזֶּֽה׃ (this), 25  וְאַתָּה֙ (then may You) תִּשְׁמַ֣ע (hear) מִן־ (from) הַשָּׁמַ֔יִם (the heavens) וְסָ֣לַחְתָּ֔ (and forgive) לְחַטַּ֖את (the sin) עַמְּךָ֣ (of Your people) יִשְׂרָאֵ֑ל (Israel), וַהֲשֵׁיבוֹתָם֙ (and bring them back) אֶל־ (to) הָ֣אֲדָמָ֔ה (the land) אֲשֶׁר־ (that) נָתַ֥תָּה (You gave) לָהֶ֖ם (to them) וְלַאֲבֹתֵיהֶֽם׃פ (and to their fathers).

26  בְּהֵעָצֵ֧ר (When are shut up) הַשָּׁמַ֛יִם (the heavens) וְלֹֽא־ (and not) יִהְיֶ֥ה (there is) מָטָ֖ר (rain) כִּ֣י (because) יֶֽחֶטְאוּ־ (they have sinned) לָ֑ךְ (against You), וְהִֽתְפַּלְל֞וּ (and they pray) אֶל־ (toward) הַמָּק֤וֹם (the place) הַזֶּה֙ (this) וְהוֹד֣וּ (and confess) אֶת־ (-) שְׁמֶ֔ךָ (Your name), מֵחַטָּאתָ֥ם (from their sin) יְשׁוּב֖וּן (they turn back) כִּ֥י (because) תַעֲנֵֽם׃ (You afflict them), 27  וְאַתָּ֣ה׀ (then may You) תִּשְׁמַ֣ע (hear) הַשָּׁמַ֗יִם (in the heavens) וְסָ֨לַחְתָּ֜ (and forgive) לְחַטַּ֤את (the sin) עֲבָדֶ֙יךָ֙ (of Your servants) וְעַמְּךָ֣ (and of Your people) יִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל (Israel), כִּ֥י (that) תוֹרֵ֛ם (You may direct them) אֶל־ (toward) הַדֶּ֥רֶךְ (the way) הַטּוֹבָ֖ה (good) אֲשֶׁ֣ר (that) יֵֽלְכוּ־ (they should walk) בָ֑הּ (in it), וְנָתַתָּ֤ה (and give) מָטָר֙ (rain) עַֽל־ (on) אַרְצְךָ֔ (Your land) אֲשֶׁר־ (that) נָתַ֥תָּה (You have given) לְעַמְּךָ֖ (to Your people) לְנַחֲלָֽה׃ס (as an inheritance).

28  רָעָ֞ב (Famine), כִּֽי־ (when) יִהְיֶ֣ה (it is) בָאָ֗רֶץ (in the land), דֶּ֣בֶר (pestilence), כִּֽי־ (or) יִֽ֠הְיֶה (there is) שִׁדָּפ֨וֹן (blight) וְיֵרָק֜וֹן (or mildew), אַרְבֶּ֤ה (locust) וְחָסִיל֙ (or grasshoppers), כִּ֣י (when) יִהְיֶ֔ה (it is) כִּ֧י (that) יָֽצַר־ (besiege) ל֛וֹ (them) אוֹיְבָ֖יו (their enemies) בְּאֶ֣רֶץ (in their land)— שְׁעָרָ֑יו (its gates)— כָּל־ (any) נֶ֖גַע (plague) וְכָֽל־ (and any) מַחֲלָֽה׃ (sickness), 29  כָּל־ (any) תְּפִלָּ֣ה (prayer), כָל־ (any) תְּחִנָּ֗ה (supplication) אֲשֶׁ֤ר (that) יִהְיֶה֙ (is) לְכָל־ (by any) הָ֣אָדָ֔ם (man) וּלְכֹ֖ל (or by all) עַמְּךָ֣ (Your people) יִשְׂרָאֵ֑ל (Israel) אֲשֶׁ֣ר (when) יֵדְע֗וּ (they know) אִ֤ישׁ (each one) נִגְעוֹ֙ (his own burden) וּמַכְאֹב֔וֹ (and his own grief) וּפָרַ֥שׂ (and he spreads out) כַּפָּ֖יו (his hands) אֶל־ (to) הַבַּ֥יִת (the house) הַזֶּֽה׃ (this), 30  וְ֠אַתָּה (then may You) תִּשְׁמַ֨ע (may hear) מִן־ (from) הַשָּׁמַ֜יִם (the heavens), מְכ֤וֹן (the fixed place) שִׁבְתֶּ֙ךָ֙ (of Your dwelling), וְסָ֣לַחְתָּ֔ (and forgive) וְנָתַתָּ֤ה (and give) לָאִישׁ֙ (to each man) כְּכָל־ (according to all) דְּרָכָ֔יו (his ways), אֲשֶׁ֥ר (since) תֵּדַ֖ע (You know) אֶת־ (-) לְבָב֑וֹ (his heart), כִּ֤י (for) אַתָּה֙ (You) לְבַדְּךָ֣ (alone) יָדַ֔עְתָּ (know) אֶת־ (-) לְבַ֖ב (the heart) בְּנֵ֥י (of the sons) הָאָדָֽם׃ (of men)), 31  לְמַ֣עַן (that) יִֽירָא֗וּךָ (they may fear You) לָלֶ֙כֶת֙ (to walk) בִּדְרָכֶ֔יךָ (in Your ways), כָּל־ (all) הַ֨יָּמִ֔ים (the days) אֲשֶׁר־ (that) הֵ֥ם (they) חַיִּ֖ים (live) עַל־ (on) פְּנֵ֣י (the face) הָאֲדָמָ֑ה (of the ground) אֲשֶׁ֥ר (that) נָתַ֖תָּה (You have given) לַאֲבֹתֵֽינוּ׃ס (to our fathers).

32  וְגַ֣ם (And also) אֶל־ (concerning) הַנָּכְרִ֗י (the foreigner) אֲ֠שֶׁר (who) לֹ֥א (not) מֵעַמְּךָ֣ (of Your people) יִשְׂרָאֵל֮ (Israel) הוּא֒ (is), וּבָ֣א׀ (and he comes) מֵאֶ֣רֶץ (from a country) רְחוֹקָ֗ה (distant) לְמַ֨עַן (for the sake) שִׁמְךָ֤ (of Your name) הַגָּדוֹל֙ (great) וְיָדְךָ֣ (and Your hand) הַחֲזָקָ֔ה (mighty) וּֽזְרֽוֹעֲךָ֖ (and Your arm) הַנְּטוּיָ֑ה (outstretched), וּבָ֥אוּ (and they come) וְהִֽתְפַּלְל֖וּ (and pray) אֶל־ (in) הַבַּ֥יִת (the house) הַזֶּֽה׃ (this), 33  וְאַתָּ֞ה (then may You) תִּשְׁמַ֤ע (may hear) מִן־ (from) הַשָּׁמַ֙יִם֙ (the heavens), מִמְּכ֣וֹן (the fixed place) שִׁבְתֶּ֔ךָ (of Your dwelling), וְעָשִׂ֕יתָ (and do) כְּכֹ֛ל (according to all) אֲשֶׁר־ (for which) יִקְרָ֥א (calls) אֵלֶ֖יךָ (to You) הַנָּכְרִ֑י (the foreigner), לְמַ֣עַן (so that) יֵדְעוּ֩ (may know) כָל־ (all) עַמֵּ֨י (the peoples) הָאָ֜רֶץ (of the earth) אֶת־ (-) שְׁמֶ֗ךָ (Your name) וּלְיִרְאָ֤ה (and fear) אֹֽתְךָ֙ (You) כְּעַמְּךָ֣ (as do Your people) יִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל (Israel), וְלָדַ֕עַת (that they may know) כִּֽי־ (that) שִׁמְךָ֣ (Your name) נִקְרָ֔א (is called) עַל־ (upon) הַבַּ֥יִת (the house) הַזֶּ֖ה (this) אֲשֶׁ֥ר (that) בָּנִֽיתִי׃ (I have built).

34  כִּֽי־ (When) יֵצֵ֨א (go out) עַמְּךָ֤ (Your people) לַמִּלְחָמָה֙ (to battle) עַל־ (against) א֣וֹיְבָ֔יו (their enemies) בַּדֶּ֖רֶךְ (in the way) אֲשֶׁ֣ר (that) תִּשְׁלָחֵ֑ם (You send them), וְהִתְפַּֽלְל֣וּ (and they pray) אֵלֶ֗יךָ (to You) דֶּ֣רֶךְ (toward) הָעִ֤יר (the city) הַזֹּאת֙ (this) אֲשֶׁ֣ר (that) בָּחַ֣רְתָּ (You have chosen) בָּ֔הּ (in it) וְהַבַּ֖יִת (and the house) אֲשֶׁר־ (that) בָּנִ֥יתִי (I have built) לִשְׁמֶֽךָ׃ (for Your name), 35  וְשָׁמַעְתָּ֙ (then may You hear) מִן־ (from) הַשָּׁמַ֔יִם (the heavens) אֶת־ (-) תְּפִלָּתָ֖ם (their prayer) וְאֶת־ (and) תְּחִנָּתָ֑ם (their supplication), וְעָשִׂ֖יתָ (and may You maintain) מִשְׁפָּטָֽם׃ (their cause).

36  כִּ֣י (When) יֶחֶטְאוּ־ (they sin) לָ֗ךְ (against You)— כִּ֣י (for) אֵ֤ין (there is no) אָדָם֙ (one) אֲשֶׁ֣ר (who) לֹא־ (not) יֶחֱטָ֔א (does sin)— וְאָנַפְתָּ֣ (and You become angry) בָ֔ם (with them) וּנְתַתָּ֖ם (and deliver them) לִפְנֵ֣י (to) אוֹיֵ֑ב (the enemy), וְשָׁב֧וּם (their captors) שׁוֹבֵיהֶ֛ם (and take them captive) אֶל־ (to) אֶ֥רֶץ (a land) רְחוֹקָ֖ה (distant) א֥וֹ (or) קְרוֹבָֽה׃ (near), 37  וְהֵשִׁ֙יבוּ֙ (and they come) אֶל־ (to) לְבָבָ֔ם (themselves) בָּאָ֖רֶץ (in the land) אֲשֶׁ֣ר (where) נִשְׁבּוּ־ (they were carried captive) שָׁ֑ם (there), וְשָׁ֣בוּ׀ (and they turn) וְהִֽתְחַנְּנ֣וּ (and make supplication) אֵלֶ֗יךָ (to You) בְּאֶ֤רֶץ (in the land) שִׁבְיָם֙ (of their captivity), לֵאמֹ֔ר (saying), חָטָ֥אנוּ (We have sinned), הֶעֱוִ֖ינוּ (we have done wrong) וְרָשָֽׁעְנוּ׃ (and have committed wickedness), 38  וְשָׁ֣בוּ (and they return) אֵלֶ֗יךָ (to You) בְּכָל־ (with all) לִבָּם֙ (their heart) וּבְכָל־ (and with all) נַפְשָׁ֔ם (their soul) בְּאֶ֥רֶץ (in the land) שִׁבְיָ֖ם (of their captivity) אֲשֶׁר־ (where) שָׁב֣וּ (they have been carried captive), אֹתָ֑ם (-) וְהִֽתְפַּֽלְל֗וּ (and they pray) דֶּ֤רֶךְ (toward) אַרְצָם֙ (their land) אֲשֶׁ֣ר (that) נָתַ֣תָּה (You gave) לַאֲבוֹתָ֔ם (to their fathers), וְהָעִיר֙ (and the city) אֲשֶׁ֣ר (that) בָּחַ֔רְתָּ (You have chosen), וְלַבַּ֖יִת (and toward the house) אֲשֶׁר־ (that) בָּנִ֥יתִי (I have built) לִשְׁמֶֽךָ׃ (for Your name), 39  וְשָׁמַעְתָּ֨ (then may You hear) מִן־ (from) הַשָּׁמַ֜יִם (the heavens), מִמְּכ֣וֹן (the fixed place) שִׁבְתְּךָ֗ (of Your dwelling), אֶת־ (-) תְּפִלָּתָם֙ (their prayer) וְאֶת־ (and) תְּחִנֹּ֣תֵיהֶ֔ם (their supplications), וְעָשִׂ֖יתָ (and may You maintain) מִשְׁפָּטָ֑ם (their cause), וְסָלַחְתָּ֥ (and forgive) לְעַמְּךָ֖ (Your people) אֲשֶׁ֥ר (who) חָֽטְאוּ־ (have sinned) לָֽךְ׃ (against You).

40  עַתָּ֣ה (Now), אֱלֹהַ֗י (my God), יִֽהְיוּ־ (let be), נָ֤א (please), עֵינֶ֙יךָ֙ (Your eyes) פְּתֻח֔וֹת (open), וְאָזְנֶ֖יךָ (and Your ears) קַשֻּׁב֑וֹת (attentive) לִתְפִלַּ֖ת (to the prayer) הַמָּק֥וֹם (in the place) הַזֶּֽה׃ס (this).

41  וְעַתָּ֗ה (And now) קוּמָ֞ה (arise), יְהוָ֤ה (O YHWH) אֱלֹהִים֙ (God), לְֽנוּחֶ֔ךָ (to Your resting place),

אַתָּ֖ה (You) וַאֲר֣וֹן (and the ark) עֻזֶּ֑ךָ (of Your strength).

כֹּהֲנֶ֜יךָ (Your priests), יְהוָ֤ה (O YHWH) אֱלֹהִים֙ (God), יִלְבְּשׁ֣וּ (let be clothed) תְשׁוּעָ֔ה (with salvation),

וַחֲסִידֶ֖יךָ (and Your holy ones) יִשְׂמְח֥וּ (let rejoice) בַטּֽוֹב׃ (in the goodness).

42  יְהוָ֣ה (O YHWH) אֱלֹהִ֔ים (God), אַל־ (not) תָּשֵׁ֖ב (do turn away) פְּנֵ֣י (the face) מְשִׁיחֶ֑יךָ (of Your anointed).

זָכְרָ֕ה (Remember) לְחַֽסְדֵ֖י (the loving devotion) דָּוִ֥יד (to David) עַבְדֶּֽךָ׃פ (Your servant).
