Abraham, Sarah, and Abimelech

1 וַיִּסַּ֨ע (And journeyed) מִשָּׁ֤ם (from there) אַבְרָהָם֙ (Abraham) אַ֣רְצָה (to) הַנֶּ֔גֶב (the Negev), וַיֵּ֥שֶׁב (and he dwelt) בֵּין־ (between) קָדֵ֖שׁ (Kadesh) וּבֵ֣ין (and between) שׁ֑וּר (Shur), וַיָּ֖גָר (and he sojourned) בִּגְרָֽר׃ (in Gerar).

2 וַיֹּ֧אמֶר (And said) אַבְרָהָ֛ם (Abraham) אֶל־ (of) שָׂרָ֥ה (Sarah) אִשְׁתּ֖וֹ (his wife), אֲחֹ֣תִי (My sister) הִ֑וא (she is). וַיִּשְׁלַ֗ח (And sent) אֲבִימֶ֙לֶךְ֙ (Abimelech) מֶ֣לֶךְ (king) גְּרָ֔ר (of Gerar) וַיִּקַּ֖ח (and took) אֶת־ (-) שָׂרָֽה׃ (Sarah).

3 וַיָּבֹ֧א (And came) אֱלֹהִ֛ים (God) אֶל־ (to) אֲבִימֶ֖לֶךְ (Abimelech) בַּחֲל֣וֹם (in a dream) הַלָּ֑יְלָה (of the night) וַיֹּ֣אמֶר (and said) ל֗וֹ (to him), הִנְּךָ֥ (Behold), מֵת֙ (you are a dead man), עַל־ (because) הָאִשָּׁ֣ה (of the woman) אֲשֶׁר־ (whom) לָקַ֔חְתָּ (you have taken); וְהִ֖וא (and she) בְּעֻ֥לַת (is married to) בָּֽעַל׃ (a husband).

4 וַאֲבִימֶ֕לֶךְ (And Abimelech) לֹ֥א (not) קָרַ֖ב (had come) אֵלֶ֑יהָ (near her), וַיֹּאמַ֕ר (and he said), אֲדֹנָ֕י (Lord), הֲג֥וֹי (a nation) גַּם־ (even) צַדִּ֖יק (a righteous) תַּהֲרֹֽג׃ (will You slay)?

5 הֲלֹ֨א (Did not) ה֤וּא (he) אָֽמַר־ (say) לִי֙ (to me) אֲחֹ֣תִי (My sister) הִ֔וא (she is)’? וְהִֽיא־ (and she), גַם־ (even) הִ֥וא (herself) אָֽמְרָ֖ה (said), אָחִ֣י (My brother) ה֑וּא (He is). בְּתָם־ (In the integrity) לְבָבִ֛י (of my heart) וּבְנִקְיֹ֥ן (and in the innocence) כַּפַּ֖י (of my hands) עָשִׂ֥יתִי (have I done) זֹֽאת׃ (this).

6 וַיֹּאמֶר֩ (And said) אֵלָ֨יו (to him) הָֽאֱלֹהִ֜ים (God) בַּחֲלֹ֗ם (in the dream), גַּ֣ם (Indeed), אָנֹכִ֤י (I) יָדַ֙עְתִּי֙ (myself knew) כִּ֤י (that) בְתָם־ (in the integrity) לְבָבְךָ֙ (of your heart) עָשִׂ֣יתָ (you did) זֹּ֔את (this); וָאֶחְשֹׂ֧ךְ (and I withheld) גַּם־ (indeed) אָנֹכִ֛י (I) אֽוֹתְךָ֖ (you) מֵחֲטוֹ־ (from sinning) לִ֑י (against Me). עַל־ (Upon) כֵּ֥ן (thus) לֹא־ (not) נְתַתִּ֖יךָ (I did let you) לִנְגֹּ֥עַ (touch) אֵלֶֽיהָ׃ (to her).

7 וְעַתָּ֗ה (And now) הָשֵׁ֤ב (return) אֵֽשֶׁת־ (wife) הָאִישׁ֙ (the man’s), כִּֽי־ (for) נָבִ֣יא (a prophet) ה֔וּא (he is), וְיִתְפַּלֵּ֥ל (and he will pray) בַּֽעַדְךָ֖ (for you), וֶֽחְיֵ֑ה (and you shall live). וְאִם־ (But if) אֵֽינְךָ֣ (not) מֵשִׁ֗יב (you do return her), דַּ֚ע (know) כִּי־ (that) מ֣וֹת (dying) תָּמ֔וּת (you will die)— אַתָּ֖ה (you) וְכָל־ (and all) אֲשֶׁר־ (that) לָֽךְ׃ (is yours).

8 וַיַּשְׁכֵּ֨ם (And rose early) אֲבִימֶ֜לֶךְ (Abimelech) בַּבֹּ֗קֶר (in the morning) וַיִּקְרָא֙ (and called) לְכָל־ (all) עֲבָדָ֔יו (his servants), וַיְדַבֵּ֛ר (and he told) אֶת־ (-) כָּל־ (all) הַדְּבָרִ֥ים (the words) הָאֵ֖לֶּה (these) בְּאָזְנֵיהֶ֑ם (in their ears); וַיִּֽירְא֥וּ (and were afraid) הָאֲנָשִׁ֖ים (the men) מְאֹֽד׃ (exceedingly).

9 וַיִּקְרָ֨א (And called) אֲבִימֶ֜לֶךְ (Abimelech) לְאַבְרָהָ֗ם (Abraham) וַיֹּ֨אמֶר (and said) ל֜וֹ (to him), מֶֽה־ (What) עָשִׂ֤יתָ (have you done) לָּ֙נוּ֙ (to us)? וּמֶֽה־ (And how) חָטָ֣אתִי (have I sinned) לָ֔ךְ (against you) כִּֽי־ (that) הֵבֵ֧אתָ (you have brought) עָלַ֛י (on me) וְעַל־ (and on) מַמְלַכְתִּ֖י (my kingdom) חֲטָאָ֣ה (a sin) גְדֹלָ֑ה (great)? מַעֲשִׂים֙ (Deeds) אֲשֶׁ֣ר (that) לֹא־ (not) יֵֽעָשׂ֔וּ (are to be done), עָשִׂ֖יתָ (you have done) עִמָּדִֽי׃ (to me).

10 וַיֹּ֥אמֶר (And said) אֲבִימֶ֖לֶךְ (Abimelech) אֶל־ (to) אַבְרָהָ֑ם (Abraham), מָ֣ה (What) רָאִ֔יתָ (did you see), כִּ֥י (that) עָשִׂ֖יתָ (you have done) אֶת־ (-) הַדָּבָ֥ר (the thing) הַזֶּֽה׃ (this)?

11 וַיֹּ֙אמֶר֙ (And said) אַבְרָהָ֔ם (Abraham), כִּ֣י (Because) אָמַ֗רְתִּי (I thought), רַ֚ק (Surely) אֵין־ (is not) יִרְאַ֣ת (the fear) אֱלֹהִ֔ים (of God) בַּמָּק֖וֹם (in the place) הַזֶּ֑ה (this), וַהֲרָג֖וּנִי (and they will kill me) עַל־ (on) דְּבַ֥ר (account) אִשְׁתִּֽי׃ (of my wife).

12 וְגַם־ (And indeed) אָמְנָ֗ה (also) אֲחֹתִ֤י (my sister), בַת־ (the daughter) אָבִי֙ (of my father), הִ֔וא (she is)— אַ֖ךְ (but) לֹ֣א (not) בַת־ (the daughter) אִמִּ֑י (of my mother). וַתְּהִי־ (And she became) לִ֖י (my) לְאִשָּֽׁה׃ (wife).

13 וַיְהִ֞י (And it came to pass), כַּאֲשֶׁ֧ר (when) הִתְע֣וּ (caused to wander) אֹתִ֗י (me) אֱלֹהִים֮ (God) מִבֵּ֣ית (from the house) אָבִי֒ (of my father), וָאֹמַ֣ר (that I said) לָ֔הּ (to her), זֶ֣ה (This is) חַסְדֵּ֔ךְ (your kindness) אֲשֶׁ֥ר (that) תַּעֲשִׂ֖י (you should do) עִמָּדִ֑י (for me): אֶ֤ל (In) כָּל־ (every) הַמָּקוֹם֙ (place) אֲשֶׁ֣ר (wherever) נָב֣וֹא (we go), שָׁ֔מָּה (there) אִמְרִי־ (say) לִ֖י (of me), אָחִ֥י (My brother) הֽוּא׃ (he is).

14 וַיִּקַּ֨ח (And took) אֲבִימֶ֜לֶךְ (Abimelech) צֹ֣אן (flock), וּבָקָ֗ר (and cattle), וַעֲבָדִים֙ (and menservants), וּשְׁפָחֹ֔ת (and maidservants), וַיִּתֵּ֖ן (and he gave them) לְאַבְרָהָ֑ם (to Abraham), וַיָּ֣שֶׁב (and he returned) ל֔וֹ (to him) אֵ֖ת (-) שָׂרָ֥ה (Sarah) אִשְׁתּֽוֹ׃ (his wife).

15 וַיֹּ֣אמֶר (And said) אֲבִימֶ֔לֶךְ (Abimelech), הִנֵּ֥ה (Behold), אַרְצִ֖י (my land is) לְפָנֶ֑יךָ (before you). בַּטּ֥וֹב (Wherever is good) בְּעֵינֶ֖יךָ (in your eyes), שֵֽׁב׃ (dwell).

16 וּלְשָׂרָ֣ה (And to Sarah) אָמַ֗ר (he said), הִנֵּ֨ה (Behold), נָתַ֜תִּי (I have given) אֶ֤לֶף (a thousand pieces) כֶּ֙סֶף֙ (of silver) לְאָחִ֔יךְ (to your brother). הִנֵּ֤ה (Behold), הוּא־ (it is) לָךְ֙ (for you) כְּס֣וּת (is a covering) עֵינַ֔יִם (of the eyes), לְכֹ֖ל (to all) אֲשֶׁ֣ר (who) אִתָּ֑ךְ (are with you), וְאֵ֥ת (and before) כֹּ֖ל (all) וְנֹכָֽחַת׃ (you are vindicated).

17 וַיִּתְפַּלֵּ֥ל (And prayed) אַבְרָהָ֖ם (Abraham) אֶל־ (to) הָאֱלֹהִ֑ים (God), וַיִּרְפָּ֨א (and healed) אֱלֹהִ֜ים (God) אֶת־ (-) אֲבִימֶ֧לֶךְ (Abimelech), וְאֶת־ (and) אִשְׁתּ֛וֹ (his wife), וְאַמְהֹתָ֖יו (and his maidservants); וַיֵּלֵֽדוּ׃ (and they bore children).

18 כִּֽי־ (For) עָצֹ֤ר (being closed) עָצַר֙ (had closed) יְהוָ֔ה (YHWH) בְּעַ֥ד (-) כָּל־ (all) רֶ֖חֶם (the wombs) לְבֵ֣ית (of the house) אֲבִימֶ֑לֶךְ (of Abimelech), עַל־ (because) דְּבַ֥ר (of) שָׂרָ֖ה (Sarah) אֵ֥שֶׁת (the wife) אַבְרָהָֽם׃ס (of Abraham).
