The Birth of Isaac

1 וַֽיהוָ֛ה (And YHWH) פָּקַ֥ד (visited) אֶת־ (-) שָׂרָ֖ה (Sarah) כַּאֲשֶׁ֣ר (as) אָמָ֑ר (He had said), וַיַּ֧עַשׂ (and did) יְהוָ֛ה (YHWH) לְשָׂרָ֖ה (for Sarah) כַּאֲשֶׁ֥ר (as) דִּבֵּֽר׃ (He had spoken).

2 וַתַּהַר֩ (And conceived) וַתֵּ֨לֶד (and bore) שָׂרָ֧ה (Sarah) לְאַבְרָהָ֛ם (to Abraham) בֵּ֖ן (a son) לִזְקֻנָ֑יו (in his old age), לַמּוֹעֵ֕ד (at the appointed time) אֲשֶׁר־ (of which) דִּבֶּ֥ר (had spoken) אֹת֖וֹ (to him) אֱלֹהִֽים׃ (God).

3 וַיִּקְרָ֨א (And called) אַבְרָהָ֜ם (Abraham) אֶֽת־ (-) שֶׁם־ (the name) בְּנ֧וֹ (of his son) הַנּֽוֹלַד־ (who was born) ל֛וֹ (to him), אֲשֶׁר־ (whom) יָלְדָה־ (bore) לּ֥וֹ (to him) שָׂרָ֖ה (Sarah), יִצְחָֽק׃ (Isaac).

4 וַיָּ֤מָל (And circumcised) אַבְרָהָם֙ (Abraham) אֶת־ (-) יִצְחָ֣ק (Isaac) בְּנ֔וֹ (his son), בֶּן־ (a son) שְׁמֹנַ֖ת (of eight) יָמִ֑ים (days), כַּאֲשֶׁ֛ר (as) צִוָּ֥ה (had commanded) אֹת֖וֹ (him) אֱלֹהִֽים׃ (God).

5 וְאַבְרָהָ֖ם (And Abraham) בֶּן־ (was a son) מְאַ֣ת (of a hundred) שָׁנָ֑ה (years) בְּהִוָּ֣לֶד (when was born) ל֔וֹ (to him) אֵ֖ת (-) יִצְחָ֥ק (Isaac) בְּנֽוֹ׃ (his son).

6 וַתֹּ֣אמֶר (And said) שָׂרָ֔ה (Sarah), צְחֹ֕ק (Laughter) עָ֥שָׂה (has brought) לִ֖י (to me) אֱלֹהִ֑ים (God); כָּל־ (all) הַשֹּׁמֵ֖עַ (who hear) יִֽצְחַק־ (will laugh) לִֽי׃ (with me).

7 וַתֹּ֗אמֶר (And she said), מִ֤י (Who) מִלֵּל֙ (would have said) לְאַבְרָהָ֔ם (to Abraham) הֵינִ֥יקָה (that would nurse) בָנִ֖ים (children) שָׂרָ֑ה (Sarah)? כִּֽי־ (For) יָלַ֥דְתִּי (I have borne) בֵ֖ן (a son) לִזְקֻנָֽיו׃ (in his old age).

8 וַיִּגְדַּ֥ל (And grew) הַיֶּ֖לֶד (the child) וַיִּגָּמַ֑ל (and was weaned), וַיַּ֤עַשׂ (and made) אַבְרָהָם֙ (Abraham) מִשְׁתֶּ֣ה (a feast) גָד֔וֹל (great) בְּי֖וֹם (on the same day) הִגָּמֵ֥ל (that was weaned) אֶת־ (-) יִצְחָֽק׃ (Isaac).

9 וַתֵּ֨רֶא (And saw) שָׂרָ֜ה (Sarah) אֶֽת־ (-) בֶּן־ (the son) הָגָ֧ר (of Hagar) הַמִּצְרִ֛ית (the Egyptian), אֲשֶׁר־ (whom) יָלְדָ֥ה (she had borne) לְאַבְרָהָ֖ם (to Abraham), מְצַחֵֽק׃ (mocking).

10 וַתֹּ֙אמֶר֙ (And she said) לְאַבְרָהָ֔ם (to Abraham), גָּרֵ֛שׁ (Drive out) הָאָמָ֥ה (the maidservant) הַזֹּ֖את (this) וְאֶת־ (and) בְּנָ֑הּ (her son), כִּ֣י (for) לֹ֤א (not) יִירַשׁ֙ (shall be heir) בֶּן־ (the son) הָאָמָ֣ה (of the maidservant) הַזֹּ֔את (this) עִם־ (with) בְּנִ֖י (my son), עִם־ (with) יִצְחָֽק׃ (Isaac).

11 וַיֵּ֧רַע (And was displeasing) הַדָּבָ֛ר (the matter) מְאֹ֖ד (very) בְּעֵינֵ֣י (in the eyes) אַבְרָהָ֑ם (of Abraham), עַ֖ל (for) אוֹדֹ֥ת (the cause) בְּנֽוֹ׃ (of his son).

12 וַיֹּ֨אמֶר (And said) אֱלֹהִ֜ים (God) אֶל־ (to) אַבְרָהָ֗ם (Abraham), אַל־ (Not) יֵרַ֤ע (let it be wrong) בְּעֵינֶ֙יךָ֙ (in your eyes) עַל־ (because) הַנַּ֣עַר (of the boy), וְעַל־ (or because) אֲמָתֶ֔ךָ (of your maidservant); כֹּל֩ (all) אֲשֶׁ֨ר (that) תֹּאמַ֥ר (has said) אֵלֶ֛יךָ (to you) שָׂרָ֖ה (Sarah), שְׁמַ֣ע (listen) בְּקֹלָ֑הּ (to her voice); כִּ֣י (for) בְיִצְחָ֔ק (in Isaac) יִקָּרֵ֥א (will be reckoned) לְךָ֖ (to you) זָֽרַע׃ (seed).

13 וְגַ֥ם (Yet) אֶת־ (-) בֶּן־ (the son) הָאָמָ֖ה (of the maidservant) לְג֣וֹי (into a nation) אֲשִׂימֶ֑נּוּ (I will make), כִּ֥י (because) זַרְעֲךָ֖ (your seed) הֽוּא׃ (he is).

14 וַיַּשְׁכֵּ֣ם (And rose early) אַבְרָהָ֣ם׀ (Abraham) בַּבֹּ֡קֶר (in the morning), וַיִּֽקַּֽח־ (and he took) לֶחֶם֩ (bread) וְחֵ֨מַת (and a skin) מַ֜יִם (of water), וַיִּתֵּ֣ן (and he gave them) אֶל־ (to) הָ֠גָר (Hagar)— שָׂ֧ם (putting them) עַל־ (on) שִׁכְמָ֛הּ (her shoulder)— וְאֶת־ (and) הַיֶּ֖לֶד (the boy) וַֽיְשַׁלְּחֶ֑הָ (and he sent her away). וַתֵּ֣לֶךְ (And she departed) וַתֵּ֔תַע (and wandered) בְּמִדְבַּ֖ר (in the wilderness) בְּאֵ֥ר (of Beer-) שָֽׁבַע׃ (sheba).

15 וַיִּכְל֥וּ (And was used up) הַמַּ֖יִם (the water) מִן־ (from) הַחֵ֑מֶת (the skin), וַתַּשְׁלֵ֣ךְ (and she cast) אֶת־ (-) הַיֶּ֔לֶד (the boy) תַּ֖חַת (under) אַחַ֥ד (one) הַשִּׂיחִֽם׃ (of the bushes).

16 וַתֵּלֶךְ֩ (And she went) וַתֵּ֨שֶׁב (and sat down) לָ֜הּ (by herself) מִנֶּ֗גֶד (opposite him), הַרְחֵק֙ (as distance) כִּמְטַחֲוֵ֣י (of the shot) קֶ֔שֶׁת (of a bow). כִּ֣י (For) אָֽמְרָ֔ה (she said), אַל־ (Not) אֶרְאֶ֖ה (let me see) בְּמ֣וֹת (the death) הַיָּ֑לֶד (of the boy). וַתֵּ֣שֶׁב (And she sat) מִנֶּ֔גֶד (opposite him) וַתִּשָּׂ֥א (and lifted up) אֶת־ (-) קֹלָ֖הּ (her voice) וַתֵּֽבְךְּ׃ (and wept).

17 וַיִּשְׁמַ֣ע (And heard) אֱלֹהִים֮ (God) אֶת־ (-) ק֣וֹל (the voice) הַנַּעַר֒ (of the boy), וַיִּקְרָא֩ (and called) מַלְאַ֨ךְ (the angel) אֱלֹהִ֤ים׀ (of God) אֶל־ (to) הָגָר֙ (Hagar) מִן־ (out) הַשָּׁמַ֔יִם (of the heavens) וַיֹּ֥אמֶר (and said) לָ֖הּ (to her), מַה־ (What) לָּ֣ךְ (ails you), הָגָ֑ר (Hagar)? אַל־ (Not) תִּ֣ירְאִ֔י (fear); כִּֽי־ (for) שָׁמַ֧ע (has listened) אֱלֹהִ֛ים (God) אֶל־ (to) ק֥וֹל (the voice) הַנַּ֖עַר (of the boy), בַּאֲשֶׁ֥ר (where) הוּא־ (he is) שָֽׁם׃ (there).

18 ק֚וּמִי (Arise), שְׂאִ֣י (lift up) אֶת־ (-) הַנַּ֔עַר (the boy), וְהַחֲזִ֥יקִי (and hold with) אֶת־ (-) יָדֵ֖ךְ (your hand) בּ֑וֹ (him); כִּֽי־ (for) לְג֥וֹי (into a nation) גָּד֖וֹל (great) אֲשִׂימֶֽנּוּ׃ (I will make him).

19 וַיִּפְקַ֤ח (And opened) אֱלֹהִים֙ (God) אֶת־ (-) עֵינֶ֔יהָ (her eyes), וַתֵּ֖רֶא (and she saw) בְּאֵ֣ר (a well) מָ֑יִם (of water); וַתֵּ֜לֶךְ (and she went) וַתְּמַלֵּ֤א (and filled) אֶת־ (-) הַחֵ֙מֶת֙ (the skin) מַ֔יִם (with water) וַתַּ֖שְׁקְ (and gave a drink) אֶת־ (-) הַנָּֽעַר׃ (the boy).

20 וַיְהִ֧י (And was) אֱלֹהִ֛ים (God) אֶת־ (with) הַנַּ֖עַר (the boy), וַיִּגְדָּ֑ל (and he grew) וַיֵּ֙שֶׁב֙ (and dwelt) בַּמִּדְבָּ֔ר (in the wilderness) וַיְהִ֖י (and became) רֹבֶ֥ה (a great) קַשָּֽׁת׃ (archer).

21 וַיֵּ֖שֶׁב (And He dwelt) בְּמִדְבַּ֣ר (in the wilderness) פָּארָ֑ן (of Paran), וַתִּֽקַּֽח־ (and took) ל֥וֹ (for him) אִמּ֛וֹ (his mother) אִשָּׁ֖ה (a wife) מֵאֶ֥רֶץ (from the land) מִצְרָֽיִם׃פ (of Egypt).

The Covenant at Beersheba

22 וַֽיְהִי֙ (And it came to pass), בָּעֵ֣ת (at the time) הַהִ֔וא (that), וַיֹּ֣אמֶר (and spoke) אֲבִימֶ֗לֶךְ (Abimelech) וּפִיכֹל֙ (and Phichol) שַׂר־ (the commander) צְבָא֔וֹ (of his army) אֶל־ (to) אַבְרָהָ֖ם (Abraham), לֵאמֹ֑ר (saying), אֱלֹהִ֣ים (God is) עִמְּךָ֔ (with you) בְּכֹ֥ל (in all) אֲשֶׁר־ (that) אַתָּ֖ה (you) עֹשֶֽׂה׃ (do).

23 וְעַתָּ֗ה (And now) הִשָּׁ֨בְעָה (swear) לִּ֤י (to me) בֵֽאלֹהִים֙ (before God) הֵ֔נָּה (here), אִם־ (that not) תִּשְׁקֹ֣ר (you will deal falsely) לִ֔י (with me) וּלְנִינִ֖י (or with my offspring), וּלְנֶכְדִּ֑י (or with my posterity), כַּחֶ֜סֶד (but that according to the kindness) אֲשֶׁר־ (that) עָשִׂ֤יתִי (I have done) עִמְּךָ֙ (to you), תַּעֲשֶׂ֣ה (you will do) עִמָּדִ֔י (to me), וְעִם־ (and to) הָאָ֖רֶץ (the land) אֲשֶׁר־ (that) גַּ֥רְתָּה (you are sojourning) בָּֽהּ׃ (in).

24 וַיֹּ֙אמֶר֙ (And said) אַבְרָהָ֔ם (Abraham), אָנֹכִ֖י (I) אִשָּׁבֵֽעַ׃ (swear).

25 וְהוֹכִ֥חַ (And reproved) אַבְרָהָ֖ם (Abraham) אֶת־ (-) אֲבִימֶ֑לֶךְ (Abimelech) עַל־ (-) אֹדוֹת֙ (because) בְּאֵ֣ר (of a well) הַמַּ֔יִם (of water) אֲשֶׁ֥ר (that) גָּזְל֖וּ (had seized) עַבְדֵ֥י (the servants) אֲבִימֶֽלֶךְ׃ (of Abimelech).

26 וַיֹּ֣אמֶר (And said) אֲבִימֶ֔לֶךְ (Abimelech), לֹ֣א (Not) יָדַ֔עְתִּי (I do know) מִ֥י (who) עָשָׂ֖ה (has done) אֶת־ (-) הַדָּבָ֣ר (the thing) הַזֶּ֑ה (this). וְגַם־ (And) אַתָּ֞ה (you) לֹא־ (not) הִגַּ֣דְתָּ (did tell) לִּ֗י (me), וְגַ֧ם (and) אָנֹכִ֛י (I) לֹ֥א (not) שָׁמַ֖עְתִּי (had heard of it) בִּלְתִּ֥י (until) הַיּֽוֹם׃ (today).

27 וַיִּקַּ֤ח (And took) אַבְרָהָם֙ (Abraham) צֹ֣אן (flock) וּבָקָ֔ר (and cattle) וַיִּתֵּ֖ן (and gave them) לַאֲבִימֶ֑לֶךְ (to Abimelech); וַיִּכְרְת֥וּ (and cut) שְׁנֵיהֶ֖ם (the two of them) בְּרִֽית׃ (a covenant).

28 וַיַּצֵּ֣ב (And set) אַבְרָהָ֗ם (Abraham) אֶת־ (-) שֶׁ֛בַע (seven) כִּבְשֹׂ֥ת (ewe lambs) הַצֹּ֖אן (of the flock) לְבַדְּהֶֽן׃ (by themselves).

29 וַיֹּ֥אמֶר (And said) אֲבִימֶ֖לֶךְ (Abimelech) אֶל־ (to) אַבְרָהָ֑ם (Abraham), מָ֣ה (What) הֵ֗נָּה (they) שֶׁ֤בַע (seven) כְּבָשֹׂת֙ (ewe lambs), הָאֵ֔לֶּה (these) אֲשֶׁ֥ר (that) הִצַּ֖בְתָּ (you have set) לְבַדָּֽנָה׃ (by themselves)?

30 וַיֹּ֕אמֶר (And he said), כִּ֚י (For) אֶת־ (-) שֶׁ֣בַע (these seven) כְּבָשֹׂ֔ת (ewe lambs) תִּקַּ֖ח (you will take) מִיָּדִ֑י (from my hand), בַּעֲבוּר֙ (that) תִּֽהְיֶה־ (it may be) לִּ֣י (for me) לְעֵדָ֔ה (a witness) כִּ֥י (that) חָפַ֖רְתִּי (I have dug) אֶת־ (-) הַבְּאֵ֥ר (the well) הַזֹּֽאת׃ (this).

31 עַל־ (Upon) כֵּ֗ן (thus), קָרָ֛א (he called) לַמָּק֥וֹם (place) הַה֖וּא (that) בְּאֵ֣ר (Beer-) שָׁ֑בַע (sheba), כִּ֛י (because) שָׁ֥ם (there) נִשְׁבְּע֖וּ (swore an oath) שְׁנֵיהֶֽם׃ (the two of them).

32 וַיִּכְרְת֥וּ (And they cut) בְרִ֖ית (a covenant) בִּבְאֵ֣ר (at Beer-) שָׁ֑בַע (sheba); וַיָּ֣קָם (and rose) אֲבִימֶ֗לֶךְ (Abimelech) וּפִיכֹל֙ (and Phichol) שַׂר־ (the commander) צְבָא֔וֹ (of his army), וַיָּשֻׁ֖בוּ (and they returned) אֶל־ (to) אֶ֥רֶץ (the land) פְּלִשְׁתִּֽים׃ (of the Philistines).

33 וַיִּטַּ֥ע (And he planted) אֶ֖שֶׁל (a tamarisk tree) בִּבְאֵ֣ר (in Beer-) שָׁ֑בַע (sheba), וַיִּ֨קְרָא־ (and called) שָׁ֔ם (there) בְּשֵׁ֥ם (on the name) יְהוָ֖ה (of YHWH) אֵ֥ל (El-) עוֹלָֽם׃ (Olam).

34 וַיָּ֧גָר (And sojourned) אַבְרָהָ֛ם (Abraham) בְּאֶ֥רֶץ (in the land) פְּלִשְׁתִּ֖ים (of the Philistines) יָמִ֥ים (days) רַבִּֽים׃פ (many).
