Lot Welcomes the Angels
(Judges 19:1–30)

1 וַ֠יָּבֹאוּ (And came) שְׁנֵ֨י (the two) הַמַּלְאָכִ֤ים (angels) סְדֹ֙מָה֙ (to Sodom) בָּעֶ֔רֶב (in the evening), וְל֖וֹט (and Lot) יֹשֵׁ֣ב (was sitting) בְּשַֽׁעַר־ (at the gate) סְדֹ֑ם (of Sodom). וַיַּרְא־ (And saw them) לוֹט֙ (Lot), וַיָּ֣קָם (and he rose) לִקְרָאתָ֔ם (to meet them), וַיִּשְׁתַּ֥חוּ (and he bowed himself) אַפַּ֖יִם (with his nose) אָֽרְצָה׃ (to the earth).

2 וַיֹּ֜אמֶר (And he said), הִנֶּ֣ה (Behold) נָּא־ (now), אֲדֹנַ֗י (my lords), ס֣וּרוּ (turn in), נָ֠א (please), אֶל־ (to) בֵּ֨ית (the house) עַבְדְּכֶ֤ם (of your⁺ servant), וְלִ֙ינוּ֙ (and spend the night), וְרַחֲצ֣וּ (and wash) רַגְלֵיכֶ֔ם (your⁺ feet). וְהִשְׁכַּמְתֶּ֖ם (And you⁺ may rise early) וַהֲלַכְתֶּ֣ם (and go) לְדַרְכְּכֶ֑ם (on your⁺ way). וַיֹּאמְר֣וּ (And they said), לֹּ֔א (No), כִּ֥י (for) בָרְח֖וֹב (in the open square) נָלִֽין׃ (we will spend the night).

3 וַיִּפְצַר־ (And he insisted) בָּ֣ם (on it) מְאֹ֔ד (strongly). וַיָּסֻ֣רוּ (And they turned in) אֵלָ֔יו (to him) וַיָּבֹ֖אוּ (and entered) אֶל־ (into) בֵּית֑וֹ (his house); וַיַּ֤עַשׂ (and he made) לָהֶם֙ (them) מִשְׁתֶּ֔ה (a feast), וּמַצּ֥וֹת (and unleavened bread) אָפָ֖ה (he baked), וַיֹּאכֵֽלוּ׃ (and they ate).

4 טֶרֶם֮ (Before) יִשְׁכָּבוּ֒ (they lay down), וְאַנְשֵׁ֨י (then the men) הָעִ֜יר (of the city), אַנְשֵׁ֤י (the men) סְדֹם֙ (of Sodom), נָסַ֣בּוּ (compassed) עַל־ (about) הַבַּ֔יִת (the house), מִנַּ֖עַר (from young) וְעַד־ (and to) זָקֵ֑ן (old), כָּל־ (all) הָעָ֖ם (the people) מִקָּצֶֽה׃ (from the end).

5 וַיִּקְרְא֤וּ (And they called) אֶל־ (to) לוֹט֙ (Lot) וַיֹּ֣אמְרוּ (and said) ל֔וֹ (to him), אַיֵּ֧ה (Where are) הָאֲנָשִׁ֛ים (the men) אֲשֶׁר־ (who) בָּ֥אוּ (came) אֵלֶ֖יךָ (to you) הַלָּ֑יְלָה (this night)? הוֹצִיאֵ֣ם (Bring them out) אֵלֵ֔ינוּ (to us) וְנֵדְעָ֖ה (that we may know) אֹתָֽם׃ (them).

6 וַיֵּצֵ֧א (And went out) אֲלֵהֶ֛ם (to them) ל֖וֹט (Lot) הַפֶּ֑תְחָה (through the doorway), וְהַדֶּ֖לֶת (and the door) סָגַ֥ר (shut) אַחֲרָֽיו׃ (behind him).

7 וַיֹּאמַ֑ר (And he said), אַל־ (Not) נָ֥א (please), אַחַ֖י (my brothers), תָּרֵֽעוּ׃ (act so wickedly).

8 הִנֵּה־ (Behold), נָ֨א (now), לִ֜י (I have) שְׁתֵּ֣י (two) בָנ֗וֹת (daughters) אֲשֶׁ֤ר (who) לֹֽא־ (not) יָדְעוּ֙ (have known) אִ֔ישׁ (a man); אוֹצִֽיאָה־ (let me bring out) נָּ֤א (please) אֶתְהֶן֙ (them) אֲלֵיכֶ֔ם (to you⁺), וַעֲשׂ֣וּ (and you⁺ may do) לָהֶ֔ן (to them) כַּטּ֖וֹב (according to what is good) בְּעֵינֵיכֶ֑ם (in your⁺ eyes). רַ֠ק (Only) לָֽאֲנָשִׁ֤ים (to the men) הָאֵל֙ (these) אַל־ (not) תַּעֲשׂ֣וּ (do) דָבָ֔ר (anything), כִּֽי־ (for) עַל־ (upon) כֵּ֥ן (thus) בָּ֖אוּ (they have come) בְּצֵ֥ל (under the shadow) קֹרָתִֽי׃ (of my roof).

9 וַיֹּאמְר֣וּ׀ (And they said), גֶּשׁ־ (Stand) הָ֗לְאָה (back). וַיֹּֽאמְרוּ֙ (And they said), הָאֶחָ֤ד (This one) בָּֽא־ (came in) לָגוּר֙ (to sojourn), וַיִּשְׁפֹּ֣ט (and he judges) שָׁפ֔וֹט (judging)! עַתָּ֕ה (Now) נָרַ֥ע (we will do evil) לְךָ֖ (to you) מֵהֶ֑ם (more than to them). וַיִּפְצְר֨וּ (And they pressed) בָאִ֤ישׁ (against the man) בְּלוֹט֙ (Lot) מְאֹ֔ד (hard), וַֽיִּגְּשׁ֖וּ (and they came near) לִשְׁבֹּ֥ר (to break down) הַדָּֽלֶת׃ (the door).

10 וַיִּשְׁלְח֤וּ (And stretched out) הָֽאֲנָשִׁים֙ (the men) אֶת־ (-) יָדָ֔ם (their hands) וַיָּבִ֧יאוּ (and pulled) אֶת־ (-) ל֛וֹט (Lot) אֲלֵיהֶ֖ם (with them) הַבָּ֑יְתָה (into the house), וְאֶת־ (and) הַדֶּ֖לֶת (the door) סָגָֽרוּ׃ (they shut).

11 וְֽאֶת־ (And) הָאֲנָשִׁ֞ים (the men) אֲשֶׁר־ (who were) פֶּ֣תַח (at the doorway) הַבַּ֗יִת (of the house), הִכּוּ֙ (they struck) בַּסַּנְוֵרִ֔ים (with blindness), מִקָּטֹ֖ן (from small) וְעַד־ (and to) גָּד֑וֹל (great), וַיִּלְא֖וּ (and they grew weary) לִמְצֹ֥א (trying to find) הַפָּֽתַח׃ (the door).

Lot Flees to Zoar

12 וַיֹּאמְר֨וּ (And said) הָאֲנָשִׁ֜ים (the men) אֶל־ (to) ל֗וֹט (Lot), עֹ֚ד (Else) מִֽי־ (who) לְךָ֣ (have you) פֹ֔ה (here)— חָתָן֙ (your son-in-law), וּבָנֶ֣יךָ (and your sons), וּבְנֹתֶ֔יךָ (and your daughters) וְכֹ֥ל (and) אֲשֶׁר־ (whoever) לְךָ֖ (you have) בָּעִ֑יר (in the city)? הוֹצֵ֖א (Get them) מִן־ (out of) הַמָּקֽוֹם׃ (the place).

13 כִּֽי־ (For) מַשְׁחִתִ֣ים (will destroy) אֲנַ֔חְנוּ (we) אֶת־ (-) הַמָּק֖וֹם (the place) הַזֶּ֑ה (this), כִּֽי־ (because) גָֽדְלָ֤ה (has grown great) צַעֲקָתָם֙ (the outcry against them) אֶת־ (before) פְּנֵ֣י (the face) יְהוָ֔ה (of YHWH); וַיְשַׁלְּחֵ֥נוּ (and has sent us) יְהוָ֖ה (YHWH) לְשַׁחֲתָֽהּ׃ (to destroy it).

14 וַיֵּצֵ֨א (And went out) ל֜וֹט (Lot) וַיְדַבֵּ֣ר׀ (and spoke) אֶל־ (to) חֲתָנָ֣יו׀ (his sons-in-law), לֹקְחֵ֣י (the ones who had taken) בְנֹתָ֗יו (his daughters), וַיֹּ֙אמֶר֙ (and he said), ק֤וּמוּ (Get up), צְּאוּ֙ (get out) מִן־ (of) הַמָּק֣וֹם (the place) הַזֶּ֔ה (this), כִּֽי־ (for) מַשְׁחִ֥ית (will destroy) יְהוָ֖ה (YHWH) אֶת־ (-) הָעִ֑יר (the city). וַיְהִ֥י (And he seemed) כִמְצַחֵ֖ק (to be joking) בְּעֵינֵ֥י (to) חֲתָנָֽיו׃ (his sons-in-law).

15 וּכְמוֹ֙ (And as) הַשַּׁ֣חַר (the dawn) עָלָ֔ה (came up), וַיָּאִ֥יצוּ (pressed) הַמַּלְאָכִ֖ים (and the angels) בְּל֣וֹט (Lot), לֵאמֹ֑ר (saying), קוּם֩ (Get up), קַ֨ח (take) אֶֽת־ (-) אִשְׁתְּךָ֜ (your wife), וְאֶת־ (and) שְׁתֵּ֤י (your two) בְנֹתֶ֙יךָ֙ (daughters) הַנִּמְצָאֹ֔ת (who are here), פֶּן־ (lest) תִּסָּפֶ֖ה (you be destroyed) בַּעֲוֺ֥ן (in the iniquity) הָעִֽיר׃ (of the city).

16 וַֽיִּתְמַהְמָ֓הּ׀ (And he lingered), וַיַּחֲזִ֨קוּ (and took hold) הָאֲנָשִׁ֜ים (the men) בְּיָד֣וֹ (on his hand) וּבְיַד־ (and of the hand) אִשְׁתּ֗וֹ (of his wife) וּבְיַד֙ (and of the hand) שְׁתֵּ֣י (of his two) בְנֹתָ֔יו (daughters)— בְּחֶמְלַ֥ת (being merciful) יְהוָ֖ה (YHWH) עָלָ֑יו (to him). וַיֹּצִאֻ֥הוּ (And they brought him out) וַיַּנִּחֻ֖הוּ (and set him) מִח֥וּץ (outside) לָעִֽיר׃ (of the city).

17 וַיְהִי֩ (And it came to pass), כְהוֹצִיאָ֨ם (when they had brought) אֹתָ֜ם (them) הַח֗וּצָה (outside), וַיֹּ֙אמֶר֙ (that he said), הִמָּלֵ֣ט (Escape) עַל־ (for) נַפְשֶׁ֔ךָ (your life)! אַל־ (Not) תַּבִּ֣יט (do look) אַחֲרֶ֔יךָ (behind you), וְאַֽל־ (and not) תַּעֲמֹ֖ד (stay) בְּכָל־ (in all) הַכִּכָּ֑ר (the plain); הָהָ֥רָה (to the mountains) הִמָּלֵ֖ט (escape), פֶּן־ (lest) תִּסָּפֶֽה׃ (you be destroyed).

18 וַיֹּ֥אמֶר (And said) ל֖וֹט (Lot) אֲלֵהֶ֑ם (to them), אַל־ (No), נָ֖א (please), אֲדֹנָֽי׃ (my lords)!

19 הִנֵּה־ (Behold) נָ֠א (please), מָצָ֨א (has found) עַבְדְּךָ֣ (your servant) חֵן֮ (favor) בְּעֵינֶיךָ֒ (in your eyes), וַתַּגְדֵּ֣ל (and you have increased) חַסְדְּךָ֗ (your kindness), אֲשֶׁ֤ר (which) עָשִׂ֙יתָ֙ (you have shown) עִמָּדִ֔י (me) לְהַחֲי֖וֹת (by saving) אֶת־ (-) נַפְשִׁ֑י (my life). וְאָנֹכִ֗י (And I) לֹ֤א (not) אוּכַל֙ (am able) לְהִמָּלֵ֣ט (to escape) הָהָ֔רָה (to the mountains), פֶּן־ (lest) תִּדְבָּקַ֥נִי (overtake me) הָרָעָ֖ה (the evil) וָמַֽתִּי׃ (and I die).

20 הִנֵּה־ (Behold), נָ֠א (please), הָעִ֨יר (the city) הַזֹּ֧את (this) קְרֹבָ֛ה (is near) לָנ֥וּס (to flee) שָׁ֖מָּה (there), וְהִ֣יא (and it is) מִצְעָ֑ר (a small place). אִמָּלְטָ֨ה (Let me escape) נָּ֜א (please), שָׁ֗מָּה (there). הֲלֹ֥א (Is not) מִצְעָ֛ר (a small place) הִ֖וא (it)? וּתְחִ֥י (And shall live) נַפְשִֽׁי׃ (my soul).

21 וַיֹּ֣אמֶר (And he said) אֵלָ֔יו (to him), הִנֵּה֙ (Behold), נָשָׂ֣אתִי (I have sustained) פָנֶ֔יךָ (you) גַּ֖ם (also) לַדָּבָ֣ר (concerning the thing) הַזֶּ֑ה (this) לְבִלְתִּ֛י (without) הָפְכִּ֥י (overthrowing) אֶת־ (-) הָעִ֖יר (the city) אֲשֶׁ֥ר (about which) דִּבַּֽרְתָּ׃ (you have spoken).

22 מַהֵר֙ (Hurry), הִמָּלֵ֣ט (escape) שָׁ֔מָּה (there), כִּ֣י (for) לֹ֤א (not) אוּכַל֙ (I) לַעֲשׂ֣וֹת (can do) דָּבָ֔ר (anything) עַד־ (until) בֹּאֲךָ֖ (you arrive) שָׁ֑מָּה (there). עַל־ (Upon) כֵּ֛ן (thus) קָרָ֥א (was called) שֵׁם־ (the name) הָעִ֖יר (of the city) צֽוֹעַר׃ (Zoar).

23 הַשֶּׁ֖מֶשׁ (When the sun) יָצָ֣א (had risen) עַל־ (upon) הָאָ֑רֶץ (the earth), וְל֖וֹט (and Lot) בָּ֥א (had entered) צֹֽעֲרָה׃ (Zoar).

The Destruction of Sodom and Gomorrah
(Luke 17:20–37)

24 וַֽיהוָ֗ה (And YHWH) הִמְטִ֧יר (rained) עַל־ (on) סְדֹ֛ם (Sodom) וְעַל־ (and) עֲמֹרָ֖ה (Gomorrah) גָּפְרִ֣ית (brimstone) וָאֵ֑שׁ (and fire) מֵאֵ֥ת (from) יְהוָ֖ה (YHWH), מִן־ (out) הַשָּׁמָֽיִם׃ (of the heavens).

25 וַֽיַּהֲפֹךְ֙ (And He overthrew) אֶת־ (-) הֶעָרִ֣ים (the cities) הָאֵ֔ל (these), וְאֵ֖ת (and) כָּל־ (all) הַכִּכָּ֑ר (the plain), וְאֵת֙ (and) כָּל־ (all) יֹשְׁבֵ֣י (those dwelling) הֶעָרִ֔ים (in the cities), וְצֶ֖מַח (and what grew) הָאֲדָמָֽה׃ (on the ground).

26 וַתַּבֵּ֥ט (And looked) אִשְׁתּ֖וֹ (his wife) מֵאַחֲרָ֑יו (back), וַתְּהִ֖י (and she became) נְצִ֥יב (a pillar) מֶֽלַח׃ (of salt).

27 וַיַּשְׁכֵּ֥ם (And rose early) אַבְרָהָ֖ם (Abraham) בַּבֹּ֑קֶר (in the morning) אֶל־ (and went to) הַ֨מָּק֔וֹם (the place) אֲשֶׁר־ (where) עָ֥מַד (he had stood) שָׁ֖ם (there) אֶת־ (before) פְּנֵ֥י (the face) יְהוָֽה׃ (of YHWH).

28 וַיַּשְׁקֵ֗ף (And he looked) עַל־ (toward) פְּנֵ֤י (the face) סְדֹם֙ (of Sodom) וַעֲמֹרָ֔ה (and Gomorrah), וְעַֽל־ (and toward) כָּל־ (all) פְּנֵ֖י (-) אֶ֣רֶץ (the land) הַכִּכָּ֑ר (of the plain), וַיַּ֗רְא (and he saw), וְהִנֵּ֤ה (and behold), עָלָה֙ (went up) קִיטֹ֣ר (smoke) הָאָ֔רֶץ (from the land) כְּקִיטֹ֖ר (like the smoke) הַכִּבְשָֽׁן׃ (of the furnace).

29 וַיְהִ֗י (And it came to pass), בְּשַׁחֵ֤ת (when destroyed) אֱלֹהִים֙ (God) אֶת־ (-) עָרֵ֣י (the cities) הַכִּכָּ֔ר (of the plain), וַיִּזְכֹּ֥ר (that remembered) אֱלֹהִ֖ים (God) אֶת־ (-) אַבְרָהָ֑ם (Abraham) וַיְשַׁלַּ֤ח (and sent) אֶת־ (-) לוֹט֙ (Lot) מִתּ֣וֹךְ (out of the midst) הַהֲפֵכָ֔ה (of the overthrow) בַּהֲפֹךְ֙ (when He overthrew) אֶת־ (-) הֶ֣עָרִ֔ים (the cities) אֲשֶׁר־ (which) יָשַׁ֥ב (had dwelt) בָּהֵ֖ן (in) לֽוֹט׃ (Lot).

Lot and His Daughters

30 וַיַּעַל֩ (And went up) ל֨וֹט (Lot) מִצּ֜וֹעַר (out of Zoar) וַיֵּ֣שֶׁב (and dwelt) בָּהָ֗ר (in the mountains), וּשְׁתֵּ֤י (and his two) בְנֹתָיו֙ (daughters) עִמּ֔וֹ (with him); כִּ֥י (for) יָרֵ֖א (he was afraid) לָשֶׁ֣בֶת (to dwell) בְּצ֑וֹעַר (in Zoar). וַיֵּ֙שֶׁב֙ (And he dwelt) בַּמְּעָרָ֔ה (in the cave)— ה֖וּא (he) וּשְׁתֵּ֥י (and two) בְנֹתָֽיו׃ (his daughters).

31 וַתֹּ֧אמֶר (And said) הַבְּכִירָ֛ה (the firstborn) אֶל־ (to) הַצְּעִירָ֖ה (the younger), אָבִ֣ינוּ (Our father) זָקֵ֑ן (is old), וְאִ֨ישׁ (and man) אֵ֤ין (there is not) בָּאָ֙רֶץ֙ (on the earth) לָב֣וֹא (to come in) עָלֵ֔ינוּ (to us), כְּדֶ֖רֶךְ (as is the way) כָּל־ (of all) הָאָֽרֶץ׃ (the earth).

32 לְכָ֨ה (Come), נַשְׁקֶ֧ה (let us make drink) אֶת־ (-) אָבִ֛ינוּ (our father) יַ֖יִן (wine), וְנִשְׁכְּבָ֣ה (and we will lie) עִמּ֑וֹ (with him), וּנְחַיֶּ֥ה (that we may preserve) מֵאָבִ֖ינוּ (of our father) זָֽרַע׃ (the seed).

33 וַתַּשְׁקֶ֧יןָ (And they made drink) אֶת־ (-) אֲבִיהֶ֛ן (their father) יַ֖יִן (wine) בַּלַּ֣יְלָה (the night) ה֑וּא (that), וַתָּבֹ֤א (and went in) הַבְּכִירָה֙ (the firstborn) וַתִּשְׁכַּ֣ב (and lay) אֶת־ (with her) אָבִ֔יהָ (father); וְלֹֽא־ (and not) יָדַ֥ע (he did know) בְּשִׁכְבָ֖הּ (when she lay down) וּבְקׄוּמָֽהּ׃ (or when she arose).

34 וַֽיְהִי֙ (And it came to pass) מִֽמָּחֳרָ֔ת (on the next day) וַתֹּ֤אמֶר (that said) הַבְּכִירָה֙ (the firstborn) אֶל־ (to) הַצְּעִירָ֔ה (the younger), הֵן־ (Indeed), שָׁכַ֥בְתִּי (I lay) אֶ֖מֶשׁ (last night) אֶת־ (with) אָבִ֑י (my father); נַשְׁקֶ֨נּוּ (let us make him drink) יַ֜יִן (wine) גַּם־ (also) הַלַּ֗יְלָה (tonight); וּבֹ֙אִי֙ (and you go in) שִׁכְבִ֣י (and lie) עִמּ֔וֹ (with him), וּנְחַיֶּ֥ה (that we may preserve) מֵאָבִ֖ינוּ (of our father) זָֽרַע׃ (the seed).

35 וַתַּשְׁקֶ֜יןָ (And they made drink) גַּ֣ם (also) בַּלַּ֧יְלָה (the night) הַה֛וּא (that) אֶת־ (-) אֲבִיהֶ֖ן (their father) יָ֑יִן (wine), וַתָּ֤קָם (and arose) הַצְּעִירָה֙ (the younger) וַתִּשְׁכַּ֣ב (and lay) עִמּ֔וֹ (with him); וְלֹֽא־ (and not) יָדַ֥ע (he did know) בְּשִׁכְבָ֖הּ (when she lay down) וּבְקֻמָֽהּ׃ (or when she arose).

36 וַֽתַּהֲרֶ֛יןָ (And conceived) שְׁתֵּ֥י (the two) בְנֽוֹת־ (daughters) ל֖וֹט (of Lot) מֵאֲבִיהֶֽן׃ (by their father).

37 וַתֵּ֤לֶד (And bore) הַבְּכִירָה֙ (the firstborn) בֵּ֔ן (a son), וַתִּקְרָ֥א (and she called) שְׁמ֖וֹ (his name) מוֹאָ֑ב (Moab); ה֥וּא (he is) אֲבִֽי־ (the father) מוֹאָ֖ב (of the Moabites) עַד־ (to) הַיּֽוֹם׃ (this day).

38 וְהַצְּעִירָ֤ה (And the younger), גַם־ (also) הִוא֙ (she) יָ֣לְדָה (bore) בֵּ֔ן (a son), וַתִּקְרָ֥א (and she called) שְׁמ֖וֹ (his name) בֶּן־ (Ben-) עַמִּ֑י (ammi); ה֛וּא (he is) אֲבִ֥י (the father) בְנֵֽי־ (of the sons) עַמּ֖וֹן (of Ammon) עַד־ (to) הַיּֽוֹם׃ס (this day).
