Topical Lexicon Occurrences and narrative setting שֵׁן appears three times, all in the Aramaic section of Daniel (Daniel 7:5; 7:7; 7:19), each time in the prophetic night-vision depicting the succession of world empires. The word is always used of the “teeth” of two separate beasts—first of the bear-like second beast and then, twice, of the terrifying fourth beast. Prophetic imagery 1. Daniel 7:5 shows the second beast “raised up on one side, and three ribs were in its mouth between its teeth; and it was told, ‘Arise, devour much flesh’ ”. The ribs caught between the teeth dramatize voracious conquest, a graphic pre-announcement of Medo-Persia’s swift expansion. Intertextual perspective While שֵׁן in Daniel is Aramaic, the Hebrew Scriptures often employ teeth as a metaphor for destructive power: “You break the teeth of the wicked” (Psalm 3:7), “They have the teeth of a lion” (Joel 1:6), or “He has made me grind my teeth on gravel” (Lamentations 3:16). Daniel’s vision aligns with this biblical pattern, in which teeth signal aggression that God will ultimately neutralize. Historical fulfillment and theological weight Early Jewish and Christian interpreters connected the second beast to Medo-Persia and the iron-toothed fourth beast to imperial Rome. History vindicates the imagery: both empires devoured territories and peoples with relentless efficiency. Yet Daniel 7 never leaves the beasts in control. The vision transitions to the courtroom of heaven where “One like a Son of Man… was given dominion and glory and kingship” (Daniel 7:13–14). The same chapter that records iron teeth also records their permanent silencing before the Ancient of Days. Ministry significance • Spiritual realism: World systems can be brutally predatory. Recognizing their “teeth” prevents naïve trust in political power.
