Context
The Faith of Abraham and Sarah
17By faith Abraham, when he was tested, offered up Isaac on the altar. He who had received the promises was ready to offer his one and only son, 18even though God had said to him, “Through Isaac your offspring will be reckoned.” 19Abraham reasoned that God could raise the dead, and in a sense, he did receive Isaac back from death.…

Cross References

But God replied, “Your wife Sarah will indeed bear you a son, and you are to name him Isaac. I will establish My covenant with him as an everlasting covenant for his descendants after him.

Genesis 22:1-2
Some time later God tested Abraham and said to him, “Abraham!” “Here I am,” he answered. / “Take your son,” God said, “your only son Isaac, whom you love, and go to the land of Moriah. Offer him there as a burnt offering on one of the mountains, which I will show you.”
“Through Isaac your offspring will be reckoned.”

But God said to Abraham, “Do not be distressed about the boy and your maidservant. Listen to everything that Sarah tells you, for through Isaac your offspring will be reckoned.

Romans 9:7-9
Nor because they are Abraham’s descendants are they all his children. On the contrary, “Through Isaac your offspring will be reckoned.” / So it is not the children of the flesh who are God’s children, but it is the children of the promise who are regarded as offspring. / For this is what the promise stated: “At the appointed time I will return, and Sarah will have a son.”

Galatians 4:28
Now you, brothers, like Isaac, are children of promise.
Genesis 22:2
“Take your son,” God said, “your only son Isaac, whom you love, and go to the land of Moriah. Offer him there as a burnt offering on one of the mountains, which I will show you.”

Genesis 22:12
“Do not lay a hand on the boy or do anything to him,” said the angel, “for now I know that you fear God, since you have not withheld your only son from me.”

Genesis 22:16-18
saying, “By Myself I have sworn, declares the LORD, that because you have done this and have not withheld your only son, / I will surely bless you, and I will multiply your descendants like the stars in the sky and the sand on the seashore. Your descendants will possess the gates of their enemies. / And through your offspring all nations of the earth will be blessed, because you have obeyed My voice.”

Romans 4:18
Against all hope, Abraham in hope believed and so became the father of many nations, just as he had been told, “So shall your offspring be.”

Hebrews 11
1. What faith is.
6. Without faith we cannot please God.
7. The examples of faithfulness in the fathers of old time.

even though God had said to him,

God had identified Isaac as the son through whom He would fulfill His covenant promises to Abraham. The command to offer Isaac tested whether Abraham would trust God’s word when obedience appeared to place the promise in jeopardy.

Gen 17:19 But God replied, “Your wife Sarah will bear you a son,…
Gen 22:1-2 Some time later God tested Abraham and said to him,…

“Through Isaac your offspring will be reckoned.”

Isaac was the appointed heir of the covenant, not Ishmael or any other son of Abraham. Abraham therefore believed that God would preserve His promise through Isaac, even if He had to raise him from the dead.

Gen 21:12 But God said to Abraham, “Do not be distressed…
Rom 9:7-9 Nor because they are Abraham’s descendants…
Gal 4:28 Now you, brothers, like Isaac, are children of promise.

Teaching Points
Faith in God's Promises
Abraham's faith was rooted in the belief that God would fulfill His promises, even when circumstances seemed impossible. Believers today are called to trust in God's promises, even when they don't see immediate results.

Obedience in Testing
Abraham's willingness to sacrifice Isaac demonstrates radical obedience. Christians are encouraged to obey God, even when His commands challenge their understanding or comfort.

God's Sovereignty and Provision
The account of Isaac's near-sacrifice and God's provision of a ram highlights God's sovereignty and provision. Believers can trust that God will provide for their needs in His timing and way.

The Importance of Legacy
Isaac represents the continuation of God's promise to Abraham. Christians are reminded of the importance of spiritual legacy and the impact of faith on future generations.

Typology of Christ
Isaac's role as the promised son and his near-sacrifice is a foreshadowing of Christ, the ultimate promised Son who was sacrificed for humanity's redemption. This typology enriches the understanding of God's redemptive plan.

(18) Of whom.--That is, Isaac. But the Greek words should perhaps be rendered to whom (Abraham): "Even he to whom it was said." On this quotation from Genesis 21:12 see the Note on Romans 9:7.

Hebrews 11:18 showcases faith that clings to God’s unbreakable promise despite contradictory appearances. Abraham obeyed in the face of the command to sacrifice Isaac because he trusted the same God who had declared, “Through Isaac your offspring will be reckoned.” The verse calls believers to the same settled confidence: God’s word stands, His character guarantees it, and our obedient faith will never nullify His plan but reveal it.
