Instead, you shall hold fast to the LORD your God,

Joshua calls Israel to remain exclusively loyal to the God who gave them the land and defeated their enemies. As Israel settled among the remaining Canaanite peoples, they faced continuing pressure to adopt foreign worship and alliances that would draw them from the covenant.
