In the resurrection, then,
This phrase refers to the belief in the resurrection of the dead, a doctrine held by the Pharisees but denied by the Sadducees, who are the ones posing the question to Jesus. The resurrection is a central tenet of Christian eschatology, affirming life after death and the eventual restoration of all things. The concept of resurrection is rooted in Old Testament scriptures such as Daniel 12:2 and Isaiah 26:19, which speak of the dead rising to eternal life. The New Testament further develops this theme, with Jesus' own resurrection serving as the firstfruits of those who have fallen asleep (1 Corinthians 15:20).

whose wife will she be of the seven?
This question is part of a hypothetical scenario presented by the Sadducees, who are attempting to challenge the concept of resurrection by referencing the Levirate marriage law found in Deuteronomy 25:5-10. This law required a man to marry his deceased brother's widow to produce offspring in the brother's name. The Sadducees' question is designed to ridicule the idea of resurrection by presenting a complex marital situation. However, it also highlights the cultural and legal practices of ancient Israel, where family lineage and inheritance were of significant importance.

For all of them were married to her.”
This statement underscores the Sadducees' attempt to create a dilemma for Jesus by pointing out that all seven brothers were legally married to the same woman. The Sadducees, who did not believe in the resurrection, are using this scenario to argue against the feasibility of life after death. Jesus' response, which follows in the subsequent verses, emphasizes that earthly institutions like marriage do not apply in the same way in the resurrection. This reflects the transformative nature of the resurrection life, where believers will be like the angels in heaven (Matthew 22:30), indicating a different order of existence beyond earthly relationships.

Teaching Points
Understanding the Resurrection
The Sadducees' question reveals a misunderstanding of the resurrection. Jesus teaches that earthly relationships do not define heavenly realities.

The Authority of Scripture
Jesus uses Scripture to correct the Sadducees, demonstrating the importance of knowing and understanding God's Word.

Eternal Perspective
Believers are encouraged to live with an eternal perspective, recognizing that life after death is different from earthly life.

Faith in God's Power
Jesus highlights the power of God to raise the dead, encouraging believers to trust in His promises and power.

Marriage and Eternity
Earthly institutions like marriage serve a purpose in this life but are transformed in the resurrection, pointing to a greater reality in God's kingdom.Verse 28. - In the resurrection; i.e. in the life beyond the grave, to which the resurrection is supposed to lead. Whose wife shall she be of the seven? Of which of the seven shall she be wife (γυνή, without the article, predicate)? The evil question stands in its naked absurdity. Had the woman a son by either of the husbands, the difficulty would have been less pronounced. In their coarse materialism, these persons carry their conceptions of the present visible world into the future spiritual world; they confuse the conditions and relations of one with those of the other, and would argue that if such insoluble complications arise in the new life, the resurrection must be an unfounded figment. Had her. All were lawfully married to her, and therefore all had equal rights. When a woman was twice married, the rabbinical gloss declared that in the other world she would belong to her first husband; but this opinion was not generally received, and the present supposititious case had never been contemplated and fell under no allowed rule.
