After this, Jesus traveled throughout Galilee. He did not want to travel in Judea, because the Jews there were trying to kill Him.1After these things Jesus was walking in Galilee, for He was unwilling to walk in Judea because the Jews were seeking to kill Him.
However, the Jewish Feast of Tabernacles was near.2Now the feast of the Jews, the Feast of Booths, was near.
So Jesus’ brothers said to Him, “Leave here and go to Judea, so that Your disciples there may see the works You are doing.3Therefore His brothers said to Him, "Leave here and go into Judea, so that Your disciples also may see Your works which You are doing.
For no one who wants to be known publicly acts in secret. Since You are doing these things, show Yourself to the world.”4"For no one does anything in secret when he himself seeks to be known publicly. If You do these things, show Yourself to the world."
For even His own brothers did not believe in Him.5For not even His brothers were believing in Him.
Therefore Jesus told them, “Although your time is always at hand, My time has not yet come.6So Jesus said to them, "My time is not yet here, but your time is always opportune.
The world cannot hate you, but it hates Me, because I testify that its works are evil.7"The world cannot hate you, but it hates Me because I testify of it, that its deeds are evil.
Go up to the feast on your own. I am not going up to this feast, because My time has not yet come.”8"Go up to the feast yourselves; I do not go up to this feast because My time has not yet fully come."
Having said this, Jesus remained in Galilee.9Having said these things to them, He stayed in Galilee.
But after His brothers had gone up to the feast, He also went—not publicly, but in secret.10But when His brothers had gone up to the feast, then He Himself also went up, not publicly, but as if, in secret.
So the Jews were looking for Him at the feast and asking, “Where is He?”11So the Jews were seeking Him at the feast and were saying, "Where is He?"
Many in the crowds were whispering about Him. Some said, “He is a good man.” But others replied, “No, He deceives the people.”12There was much grumbling among the crowds concerning Him; some were saying, "He is a good man"; others were saying, "No, on the contrary, He leads the people astray."
Yet no one would speak publicly about Him for fear of the Jews.13Yet no one was speaking openly of Him for fear of the Jews.
About halfway through the feast, Jesus went up to the temple courts and began to teach.14But when it was now the midst of the feast Jesus went up into the temple, and began to teach.
The Jews were amazed and asked, “How did this man attain such learning without having studied?”15The Jews then were astonished, saying, "How has this man become learned, having never been educated?"
“My teaching is not My own,” Jesus replied. “It comes from Him who sent Me.16So Jesus answered them and said, "My teaching is not Mine, but His who sent Me.
If anyone desires to do His will, he will know whether My teaching is from God or whether I speak on My own.17"If anyone is willing to do His will, he will know of the teaching, whether it is of God or whether I speak from Myself.
He who speaks on his own authority seeks his own glory, but He who seeks the glory of the One who sent Him is a man of truth; in Him there is no falsehood.18"He who speaks from himself seeks his own glory; but He who is seeking the glory of the One who sent Him, He is true, and there is no unrighteousness in Him.
Has not Moses given you the law? Yet not one of you keeps it. Why are you trying to kill Me?”19"Did not Moses give you the Law, and yet none of you carries out the Law? Why do you seek to kill Me?"
“You have a demon,” the crowd replied. “Who is trying to kill You?”20The crowd answered, "You have a demon! Who seeks to kill You?"
Jesus answered them, “I did one miracle, and you are all amazed.21Jesus answered them, "I did one deed, and you all marvel.
But because Moses gave you circumcision, you circumcise a boy on the Sabbath (not that it is from Moses, but from the patriarchs.)22"For this reason Moses has given you circumcision (not because it is from Moses, but from the fathers), and on the Sabbath you circumcise a man.
If a boy can be circumcised on the Sabbath so that the law of Moses will not be broken, why are you angry with Me for making the whole man well on the Sabbath?23"If a man receives circumcision on the Sabbath so that the Law of Moses will not be broken, are you angry with Me because I made an entire man well on the Sabbath?
Stop judging by outward appearances, and start judging justly.”24"Do not judge according to appearance, but judge with righteous judgment."
Then some of the people of Jerusalem began to say, “Isn’t this the man they are trying to kill?25So some of the people of Jerusalem were saying, "Is this not the man whom they are seeking to kill?
Yet here He is, speaking publicly, and they are not saying anything to Him. Have the rulers truly recognized that this is the Christ?26"Look, He is speaking publicly, and they are saying nothing to Him. The rulers do not really know that this is the Christ, do they?
But we know where this man is from. When the Christ comes, no one will know where He is from.”27"However, we know where this man is from; but whenever the Christ may come, no one knows where He is from."
Then Jesus, still teaching in the temple courts, cried out, “You know Me, and you know where I am from. I have not come of My own accord, but He who sent Me is true. You do not know Him,28Then Jesus cried out in the temple, teaching and saying, "You both know Me and know where I am from; and I have not come of Myself, but He who sent Me is true, whom you do not know.
but I know Him, because I am from Him and He sent Me.”29"I know Him, because I am from Him, and He sent Me."
So they tried to seize Him, but no one laid a hand on Him, because His hour had not yet come.30So they were seeking to seize Him; and no man laid his hand on Him, because His hour had not yet come.
Many in the crowd, however, believed in Him and said, “When the Christ comes, will He perform more signs than this man?”31But many of the crowd believed in Him; and they were saying, "When the Christ comes, He will not perform more signs than those which this man has, will He?"
When the Pharisees heard the crowd whispering these things about Jesus, they and the chief priests sent officers to arrest Him.32The Pharisees heard the crowd muttering these things about Him, and the chief priests and the Pharisees sent officers to seize Him.
So Jesus said, “I am with you only a little while longer, and then I am going to the One who sent Me.33Therefore Jesus said, "For a little while longer I am with you, then I go to Him who sent Me.
You will look for Me, but you will not find Me; and where I am, you cannot come.”34"You will seek Me, and will not find Me; and where I am, you cannot come."
At this, the Jews said to one another, “Where does He intend to go that we will not find Him? Will He go where the Jews are dispersed among the Greeks, and teach the Greeks?35The Jews then said to one another, "Where does this man intend to go that we will not find Him? He is not intending to go to the Dispersion among the Greeks, and teach the Greeks, is He?
What does He mean by saying, ‘You will look for Me, but you will not find Me,’ and, ‘Where I am, you cannot come’?”36"What is this statement that He said, 'You will seek Me, and will not find Me; and where I am, you cannot come '?"
On the last and greatest day of the feast, Jesus stood up and called out in a loud voice, “If anyone is thirsty, let him come to Me and drink.37Now on the last day, the great day of the feast, Jesus stood and cried out, saying, "If anyone is thirsty, let him come to Me and drink.
Whoever believes in Me, as the Scripture has said: ‘Streams of living water will flow from within him.’ ”38"He who believes in Me, as the Scripture said, 'From his innermost being will flow rivers of living water.'"
He was speaking about the Spirit, whom those who believed in Him were later to receive. For the Spirit had not yet been given, because Jesus had not yet been glorified.39But this He spoke of the Spirit, whom those who believed in Him were to receive; for the Spirit was not yet given, because Jesus was not yet glorified.
On hearing these words, some of the people said, “This is truly the Prophet.”40Some of the people therefore, when they heard these words, were saying, "This certainly is the Prophet."
Others declared, “This is the Christ.” But still others asked, “How can the Christ come from Galilee?41Others were saying, "This is the Christ." Still others were saying, "Surely the Christ is not going to come from Galilee, is He?
Doesn’t the Scripture say that the Christ will come from the line of David and from Bethlehem, the village where David lived?”42"Has not the Scripture said that the Christ comes from the descendants of David, and from Bethlehem, the village where David was?"
So there was division in the crowd because of Jesus.43So a division occurred in the crowd because of Him.
Some of them wanted to seize Him, but no one laid a hand on Him.44Some of them wanted to seize Him, but no one laid hands on Him.
Then the officers returned to the chief priests and Pharisees, who asked them, “Why didn’t you bring Him in?”45The officers then came to the chief priests and Pharisees, and they said to them, "Why did you not bring Him?"
“Never has anyone spoken like this man!” the officers answered.46The officers answered, "Never has a man spoken the way this man speaks."
“Have you also been deceived?” replied the Pharisees.47The Pharisees then answered them, "You have not also been led astray, have you?
“Have any of the rulers or Pharisees believed in Him?48"No one of the rulers or Pharisees has believed in Him, has he?
But this crowd that does not know the law, they are under a curse.”49"But this crowd which does not know the Law is accursed."
Nicodemus, who had gone to Jesus earlier and who himself was one of them, asked,50Nicodemus (he who came to Him before, being one of them) said to them,
“Does our law convict a man without first hearing from him to determine what he has done?”51"Our Law does not judge a man unless it first hears from him and knows what he is doing, does it?"
“Aren’t you also from Galilee?” they replied. “Look into it, and you will see that no prophet comes out of Galilee.”52They answered him, "You are not also from Galilee, are you? Search, and see that no prophet arises out of Galilee."
Then each went to his own home.53Everyone went to his home.
