After this, Jesus traveled throughout Galilee. He did not want to travel in Judea, because the Jews there were trying to kill Him.1After this Jesus traveled throughout Galilee. He stayed out of Judea because the Jewish leaders wanted to kill him.
However, the Jewish Feast of Tabernacles was near.2Now the Jewish feast of Tabernacles was near.
So Jesus’ brothers said to Him, “Leave here and go to Judea, so that Your disciples there may see the works You are doing.3So Jesus' brothers advised him, "Leave here and go to Judea so your disciples may see your miracles that you are performing.
For no one who wants to be known publicly acts in secret. Since You are doing these things, show Yourself to the world.”4For no one who seeks to make a reputation for himself does anything in secret. If you are doing these things, show yourself to the world."
For even His own brothers did not believe in Him.5(For not even his own brothers believed in him.)
Therefore Jesus told them, “Although your time is always at hand, My time has not yet come.6So Jesus replied, "My time has not yet arrived, but you are ready at any opportunity!
The world cannot hate you, but it hates Me, because I testify that its works are evil.7The world cannot hate you, but it hates me, because I am testifying about it that its deeds are evil.
Go up to the feast on your own. I am not going up to this feast, because My time has not yet come.”8You go up to the feast yourselves. I am not going up to this feast because my time has not yet fully arrived."
Having said this, Jesus remained in Galilee.9When he had said this, he remained in Galilee.
But after His brothers had gone up to the feast, He also went—not publicly, but in secret.10But when his brothers had gone up to the feast, then Jesus himself also went up, not openly but in secret.
So the Jews were looking for Him at the feast and asking, “Where is He?”11So the Jewish leaders were looking for him at the feast, asking, "Where is he?"
Many in the crowds were whispering about Him. Some said, “He is a good man.” But others replied, “No, He deceives the people.”12There was a lot of grumbling about him among the crowds. Some were saying, "He is a good man," but others, "He deceives the common people."
Yet no one would speak publicly about Him for fear of the Jews.13However, no one spoke openly about him for fear of the Jewish leaders.
About halfway through the feast, Jesus went up to the temple courts and began to teach.14When the feast was half over, Jesus went up to the temple courts and began to teach.
The Jews were amazed and asked, “How did this man attain such learning without having studied?”15Then the Jewish leaders were astonished and said, "How does this man know so much when he has never had formal instruction?"
“My teaching is not My own,” Jesus replied. “It comes from Him who sent Me.16So Jesus replied, "My teaching is not from me, but from the one who sent me.
If anyone desires to do His will, he will know whether My teaching is from God or whether I speak on My own.17If anyone wants to do God's will, he will know about my teaching, whether it is from God or whether I speak from my own authority.
He who speaks on his own authority seeks his own glory, but He who seeks the glory of the One who sent Him is a man of truth; in Him there is no falsehood.18The person who speaks on his own authority desires to receive honor for himself; the one who desires the honor of the one who sent him is a man of integrity, and there is no unrighteousness in him.
Has not Moses given you the law? Yet not one of you keeps it. Why are you trying to kill Me?”19Hasn't Moses given you the law? Yet not one of you keeps the law! Why do you want to kill me?"
“You have a demon,” the crowd replied. “Who is trying to kill You?”20The crowd answered, "You're possessed by a demon! Who is trying to kill you?"
Jesus answered them, “I did one miracle, and you are all amazed.21Jesus replied, "I performed one miracle and you are all amazed.
But because Moses gave you circumcision, you circumcise a boy on the Sabbath (not that it is from Moses, but from the patriarchs.)22However, because Moses gave you the practice of circumcision (not that it came from Moses, but from the forefathers), you circumcise a male child on the Sabbath.
If a boy can be circumcised on the Sabbath so that the law of Moses will not be broken, why are you angry with Me for making the whole man well on the Sabbath?23But if a male child is circumcised on the Sabbath so that the law of Moses is not broken, why are you angry with me because I made a man completely well on the Sabbath?
Stop judging by outward appearances, and start judging justly.”24Do not judge according to external appearance, but judge with proper judgment."
Then some of the people of Jerusalem began to say, “Isn’t this the man they are trying to kill?25Then some of the residents of Jerusalem began to say, "Isn't this the man they are trying to kill?
Yet here He is, speaking publicly, and they are not saying anything to Him. Have the rulers truly recognized that this is the Christ?26Yet here he is, speaking publicly, and they are saying nothing to him. Do the rulers really know that this man is the Christ?
But we know where this man is from. When the Christ comes, no one will know where He is from.”27But we know where this man comes from. Whenever the Christ comes, no one will know where he comes from."
Then Jesus, still teaching in the temple courts, cried out, “You know Me, and you know where I am from. I have not come of My own accord, but He who sent Me is true. You do not know Him,28Then Jesus, while teaching in the temple courts, cried out, "You both know me and know where I come from! And I have not come on my own initiative, but the one who sent me is true. You do not know him,
but I know Him, because I am from Him and He sent Me.”29but I know him, because I have come from him and he sent me."
So they tried to seize Him, but no one laid a hand on Him, because His hour had not yet come.30So then they tried to seize Jesus, but no one laid a hand on him, because his time had not yet come.
Many in the crowd, however, believed in Him and said, “When the Christ comes, will He perform more signs than this man?”31Yet many of the crowd believed in him and said, "Whenever the Christ comes, he won't perform more miraculous signs than this man did, will he?"
When the Pharisees heard the crowd whispering these things about Jesus, they and the chief priests sent officers to arrest Him.32The Pharisees heard the crowd murmuring these things about Jesus, so the chief priests and the Pharisees sent officers to arrest him.
So Jesus said, “I am with you only a little while longer, and then I am going to the One who sent Me.33Then Jesus said, "I will be with you for only a little while longer, and then I am going to the one who sent me.
You will look for Me, but you will not find Me; and where I am, you cannot come.”34You will look for me but will not find me, and where I am you cannot come."
At this, the Jews said to one another, “Where does He intend to go that we will not find Him? Will He go where the Jews are dispersed among the Greeks, and teach the Greeks?35Then the Jewish leaders said to one another, "Where is he going to go that we cannot find him? He is not going to go to the Jewish people dispersed among the Greeks and teach the Greeks, is he?
What does He mean by saying, ‘You will look for Me, but you will not find Me,’ and, ‘Where I am, you cannot come’?”36What did he mean by saying, 'You will look for me but will not find me, and where I am you cannot come'?"
On the last and greatest day of the feast, Jesus stood up and called out in a loud voice, “If anyone is thirsty, let him come to Me and drink.37On the last day of the feast, the greatest day, Jesus stood up and shouted out, "If anyone is thirsty, let him come to me, and
Whoever believes in Me, as the Scripture has said: ‘Streams of living water will flow from within him.’ ”38let the one who believes in me drink. Just as the scripture says, 'From within him will flow rivers of living water.'"
He was speaking about the Spirit, whom those who believed in Him were later to receive. For the Spirit had not yet been given, because Jesus had not yet been glorified.39(Now he said this about the Spirit, whom those who believed in him were going to receive, for the Spirit had not yet been given, because Jesus was not yet glorified.)
On hearing these words, some of the people said, “This is truly the Prophet.”40When they heard these words, some of the crowd began to say, "This really is the Prophet!"
Others declared, “This is the Christ.” But still others asked, “How can the Christ come from Galilee?41Others said, "This is the Christ!" But still others said, "No, for the Christ doesn't come from Galilee, does he?
Doesn’t the Scripture say that the Christ will come from the line of David and from Bethlehem, the village where David lived?”42Don't the scriptures say that the Christ is a descendant of David and comes from Bethlehem, the village where David lived?"
So there was division in the crowd because of Jesus.43So there was a division in the crowd because of Jesus.
Some of them wanted to seize Him, but no one laid a hand on Him.44Some of them were wanting to seize him, but no one laid a hand on him.
Then the officers returned to the chief priests and Pharisees, who asked them, “Why didn’t you bring Him in?”45Then the officers returned to the chief priests and Pharisees, who said to them, "Why didn't you bring him back with you?"
“Never has anyone spoken like this man!” the officers answered.46The officers replied, "No one ever spoke like this man!"
“Have you also been deceived?” replied the Pharisees.47Then the Pharisees answered, "You haven't been deceived too, have you?
“Have any of the rulers or Pharisees believed in Him?48None of the rulers or the Pharisees have believed in him, have they?
But this crowd that does not know the law, they are under a curse.”49But this rabble who do not know the law are accursed!"
Nicodemus, who had gone to Jesus earlier and who himself was one of them, asked,50Nicodemus, who had gone to Jesus before and who was one of the rulers, said,
“Does our law convict a man without first hearing from him to determine what he has done?”51"Our law doesn't condemn a man unless it first hears from him and learns what he is doing, does it?"
“Aren’t you also from Galilee?” they replied. “Look into it, and you will see that no prophet comes out of Galilee.”52They replied, "You aren't from Galilee too, are you? Investigate carefully and you will see that no prophet comes from Galilee!"
Then each went to his own home.53[[And each one departed to his own house.
