| 1After this, Jesus traveled throughout Galilee. He did not want to travel in Judea, because the Jews there were trying to kill Him. | 1After this, Jesus traveled around Galilee. He wanted to stay out of Judea, where the Jewish leaders were plotting his death. |
| 2However, the Jewish Feast of Tabernacles was near. | 2But soon it was time for the Jewish Festival of Shelters, |
| 3So Jesus’ brothers said to Him, “Leave here and go to Judea, so that Your disciples there may see the works You are doing. | 3and Jesus’ brothers said to him, “Leave here and go to Judea, where your followers can see your miracles! |
| 4For no one who wants to be known publicly acts in secret. Since You are doing these things, show Yourself to the world.” | 4You can’t become famous if you hide like this! If you can do such wonderful things, show yourself to the world!” |
| 5For even His own brothers did not believe in Him. | 5For even his brothers didn’t believe in him. |
| 6Therefore Jesus told them, “Although your time is always at hand, My time has not yet come. | 6Jesus replied, “Now is not the right time for me to go, but you can go anytime. |
| 7The world cannot hate you, but it hates Me, because I testify that its works are evil. | 7 The world can’t hate you, but it does hate me because I accuse it of doing evil. |
| 8Go up to the feast on your own. I am not going up to this feast, because My time has not yet come.” | 8 You go on. I’m not going to this festival, because my time has not yet come.” |
| 9Having said this, Jesus remained in Galilee. | 9After saying these things, Jesus remained in Galilee. Jesus Teaches Openly at the Temple |
| 10But after His brothers had gone up to the feast, He also went—not publicly, but in secret. | 10But after his brothers left for the festival, Jesus also went, though secretly, staying out of public view. |
| 11So the Jews were looking for Him at the feast and asking, “Where is He?” | 11The Jewish leaders tried to find him at the festival and kept asking if anyone had seen him. |
| 12Many in the crowds were whispering about Him. Some said, “He is a good man.” But others replied, “No, He deceives the people.” | 12There was a lot of grumbling about him among the crowds. Some argued, “He’s a good man,” but others said, “He’s nothing but a fraud who deceives the people.” |
| 13Yet no one would speak publicly about Him for fear of the Jews. | 13But no one had the courage to speak favorably about him in public, for they were afraid of getting in trouble with the Jewish leaders. |
| 14About halfway through the feast, Jesus went up to the temple courts and began to teach. | 14Then, midway through the festival, Jesus went up to the Temple and began to teach. |
| 15The Jews were amazed and asked, “How did this man attain such learning without having studied?” | 15The people were surprised when they heard him. “How does he know so much when he hasn’t been trained?” they asked. |
| 16“My teaching is not My own,” Jesus replied. “It comes from Him who sent Me. | 16So Jesus told them, “My message is not my own; it comes from God who sent me. |
| 17If anyone desires to do His will, he will know whether My teaching is from God or whether I speak on My own. | 17 Anyone who wants to do the will of God will know whether my teaching is from God or is merely my own. |
| 18He who speaks on his own authority seeks his own glory, but He who seeks the glory of the One who sent Him is a man of truth; in Him there is no falsehood. | 18 Those who speak for themselves want glory only for themselves, but a person who seeks to honor the one who sent him speaks truth, not lies. |
| 19Has not Moses given you the law? Yet not one of you keeps it. Why are you trying to kill Me?” | 19 Moses gave you the law, but none of you obeys it! In fact, you are trying to kill me.” |
| 20“You have a demon,” the crowd replied. “Who is trying to kill You?” | 20The crowd replied, “You’re demon possessed! Who’s trying to kill you?” |
| 21Jesus answered them, “I did one miracle, and you are all amazed. | 21Jesus replied, “I did one miracle on the Sabbath, and you were amazed. |
| 22But because Moses gave you circumcision, you circumcise a boy on the Sabbath (not that it is from Moses, but from the patriarchs.) | 22 But you work on the Sabbath, too, when you obey Moses’ law of circumcision. (Actually, this tradition of circumcision began with the patriarchs, long before the law of Moses.) |
| 23If a boy can be circumcised on the Sabbath so that the law of Moses will not be broken, why are you angry with Me for making the whole man well on the Sabbath? | 23 For if the correct time for circumcising your son falls on the Sabbath, you go ahead and do it so as not to break the law of Moses. So why should you be angry with me for healing a man on the Sabbath? |
| 24Stop judging by outward appearances, and start judging justly.” | 24 Look beneath the surface so you can judge correctly.” Is Jesus the Messiah? |
| 25Then some of the people of Jerusalem began to say, “Isn’t this the man they are trying to kill? | 25Some of the people who lived in Jerusalem started to ask each other, “Isn’t this the man they are trying to kill? |
| 26Yet here He is, speaking publicly, and they are not saying anything to Him. Have the rulers truly recognized that this is the Christ? | 26But here he is, speaking in public, and they say nothing to him. Could our leaders possibly believe that he is the Messiah? |
| 27But we know where this man is from. When the Christ comes, no one will know where He is from.” | 27But how could he be? For we know where this man comes from. When the Messiah comes, he will simply appear; no one will know where he comes from.” |
| 28Then Jesus, still teaching in the temple courts, cried out, “You know Me, and you know where I am from. I have not come of My own accord, but He who sent Me is true. You do not know Him, | 28While Jesus was teaching in the Temple, he called out, “Yes, you know me, and you know where I come from. But I’m not here on my own. The one who sent me is true, and you don’t know him. |
| 29but I know Him, because I am from Him and He sent Me.” | 29 But I know him because I come from him, and he sent me to you.” |
| 30So they tried to seize Him, but no one laid a hand on Him, because His hour had not yet come. | 30Then the leaders tried to arrest him; but no one laid a hand on him, because his time had not yet come. |
| 31Many in the crowd, however, believed in Him and said, “When the Christ comes, will He perform more signs than this man?” | 31Many among the crowds at the Temple believed in him. “After all,” they said, “would you expect the Messiah to do more miraculous signs than this man has done?” |
| 32When the Pharisees heard the crowd whispering these things about Jesus, they and the chief priests sent officers to arrest Him. | 32When the Pharisees heard that the crowds were whispering such things, they and the leading priests sent Temple guards to arrest Jesus. |
| 33So Jesus said, “I am with you only a little while longer, and then I am going to the One who sent Me. | 33But Jesus told them, “I will be with you only a little longer. Then I will return to the one who sent me. |
| 34You will look for Me, but you will not find Me; and where I am, you cannot come.” | 34 You will search for me but not find me. And you cannot go where I am going.” |
| 35At this, the Jews said to one another, “Where does He intend to go that we will not find Him? Will He go where the Jews are dispersed among the Greeks, and teach the Greeks? | 35The Jewish leaders were puzzled by this statement. “Where is he planning to go?” they asked. “Is he thinking of leaving the country and going to the Jews in other lands? Maybe he will even teach the Greeks! |
| 36What does He mean by saying, ‘You will look for Me, but you will not find Me,’ and, ‘Where I am, you cannot come’?” | 36What does he mean when he says, ‘You will search for me but not find me,’ and ‘You cannot go where I am going’?” Jesus Promises Living Water |
| 37On the last and greatest day of the feast, Jesus stood up and called out in a loud voice, “If anyone is thirsty, let him come to Me and drink. | 37On the last day, the climax of the festival, Jesus stood and shouted to the crowds, “Anyone who is thirsty may come to me! |
| 38Whoever believes in Me, as the Scripture has said: ‘Streams of living water will flow from within him.’ ” | 38 Anyone who believes in me may come and drink! For the Scriptures declare, ‘Rivers of living water will flow from his heart.’” |
| 39He was speaking about the Spirit, whom those who believed in Him were later to receive. For the Spirit had not yet been given, because Jesus had not yet been glorified. | 39(When he said “living water,” he was speaking of the Spirit, who would be given to everyone believing in him. But the Spirit had not yet been given, because Jesus had not yet entered into his glory.) Division and Unbelief |
| 40On hearing these words, some of the people said, “This is truly the Prophet.” | 40When the crowds heard him say this, some of them declared, “Surely this man is the Prophet we’ve been expecting.” |
| 41Others declared, “This is the Christ.” But still others asked, “How can the Christ come from Galilee? | 41Others said, “He is the Messiah.” Still others said, “But he can’t be! Will the Messiah come from Galilee? |
| 42Doesn’t the Scripture say that the Christ will come from the line of David and from Bethlehem, the village where David lived?” | 42For the Scriptures clearly state that the Messiah will be born of the royal line of David, in Bethlehem, the village where King David was born.” |
| 43So there was division in the crowd because of Jesus. | 43So the crowd was divided about him. |
| 44Some of them wanted to seize Him, but no one laid a hand on Him. | 44Some even wanted him arrested, but no one laid a hand on him. |
| 45Then the officers returned to the chief priests and Pharisees, who asked them, “Why didn’t you bring Him in?” | 45When the Temple guards returned without having arrested Jesus, the leading priests and Pharisees demanded, “Why didn’t you bring him in?” |
| 46“Never has anyone spoken like this man!” the officers answered. | 46“We have never heard anyone speak like this!” the guards responded. |
| 47“Have you also been deceived?” replied the Pharisees. | 47“Have you been led astray, too?” the Pharisees mocked. |
| 48“Have any of the rulers or Pharisees believed in Him? | 48“Is there a single one of us rulers or Pharisees who believes in him? |
| 49But this crowd that does not know the law, they are under a curse.” | 49This foolish crowd follows him, but they are ignorant of the law. God’s curse is on them!” |
| 50Nicodemus, who had gone to Jesus earlier and who himself was one of them, asked, | 50Then Nicodemus, the leader who had met with Jesus earlier, spoke up. |
| 51“Does our law convict a man without first hearing from him to determine what he has done?” | 51“Is it legal to convict a man before he is given a hearing?” he asked. |
| 52“Aren’t you also from Galilee?” they replied. “Look into it, and you will see that no prophet comes out of Galilee.” | 52They replied, “Are you from Galilee, too? Search the Scriptures and see for yourself—no prophet ever comes from Galilee!” ---------- [ The most ancient Greek manuscripts do not include John 7:53–8:11. ] |
| 53Then each went to his own home. | 53Then the meeting broke up, and everybody went home. |
