Then Jesus called the Twelve together and gave them power and authority over all demons, and power to cure diseases.1And He called the twelve together, and gave them power and authority over all the demons and to heal diseases.
And He sent them out to proclaim the kingdom of God and to heal the sick.2And He sent them out to proclaim the kingdom of God and to perform healing.
“Take nothing for the journey,” He told them, “no staff, no bag, no bread, no money, no second tunic.3And He said to them, "Take nothing for your journey, neither a staff, nor a bag, nor bread, nor money; and do not even have two tunics apiece.
Whatever house you enter, stay there until you leave that area.4"Whatever house you enter, stay there until you leave that city.
If anyone does not welcome you, shake the dust off your feet when you leave that town, as a testimony against them.”5"And as for those who do not receive you, as you go out from that city, shake the dust off your feet as a testimony against them."
So they set out and went from village to village, preaching the gospel and healing people everywhere.6Departing, they began going throughout the villages, preaching the gospel and healing everywhere.
When Herod the tetrarch heard about all that was happening, he was perplexed. For some were saying that John had risen from the dead,7Now Herod the tetrarch heard of all that was happening; and he was greatly perplexed, because it was said by some that John had risen from the dead,
others that Elijah had appeared, and still others that a prophet of old had arisen.8and by some that Elijah had appeared, and by others that one of the prophets of old had risen again.
“I beheaded John,” Herod said, “but who is this man I hear such things about?” And he kept trying to see Jesus.9Herod said, "I myself had John beheaded; but who is this man about whom I hear such things?" And he kept trying to see Him.
Then the apostles returned and reported to Jesus all that they had done. Taking them away privately, He withdrew to a town called Bethsaida.10When the apostles returned, they gave an account to Him of all that they had done. Taking them with Him, He withdrew by Himself to a city called Bethsaida.
But the crowds found out and followed Him. He welcomed them and spoke to them about the kingdom of God, and He healed those who needed healing.11But the crowds were aware of this and followed Him; and welcoming them, He began speaking to them about the kingdom of God and curing those who had need of healing.
As the day neared its end, the Twelve came to Jesus and said, “Dismiss the crowd so they can go to the surrounding villages and countryside for lodging and provisions. For we are in a desolate place here.”12Now the day was ending, and the twelve came and said to Him, "Send the crowd away, that they may go into the surrounding villages and countryside and find lodging and get something to eat; for here we are in a desolate place."
But Jesus told them, “You give them something to eat.” “We have only five loaves of bread and two fish,” they answered, “unless we go and buy food for all these people.”13But He said to them, "You give them something to eat!" And they said, "We have no more than five loaves and two fish, unless perhaps we go and buy food for all these people."
(There were about five thousand men.) He told His disciples, “Have them sit down in groups of about fifty each.”14(For there were about five thousand men.) And He said to His disciples, "Have them sit down to eat in groups of about fifty each."
They did so, and everyone was seated.15They did so, and had them all sit down.
Taking the five loaves and the two fish and looking up to heaven, Jesus spoke a blessing and broke them. Then He gave them to the disciples to set before the people.16Then He took the five loaves and the two fish, and looking up to heaven, He blessed them, and broke them, and kept giving them to the disciples to set before the people.
They all ate and were satisfied, and the disciples picked up twelve basketfuls of broken pieces that were left over.17And they all ate and were satisfied; and the broken pieces which they had left over were picked up, twelve baskets full.
One day as Jesus was praying in private and the disciples were with Him, He questioned them: “Who do the crowds say I am?”18And it happened that while He was praying alone, the disciples were with Him, and He questioned them, saying, "Who do the people say that I am?"
They replied, “Some say John the Baptist; others say Elijah; and still others, that a prophet of old has arisen.”19They answered and said, "John the Baptist, and others say Elijah; but others, that one of the prophets of old has risen again."
“But what about you?” Jesus asked. “Who do you say I am?” Peter answered, “The Christ of God.”20And He said to them, "But who do you say that I am?" And Peter answered and said, "The Christ of God."
Jesus strictly warned them not to tell this to anyone.21But He warned them and instructed them not to tell this to anyone,
“The Son of Man must suffer many things,” He said. “He must be rejected by the elders, chief priests, and scribes, and He must be killed and on the third day be raised to life.”22saying, "The Son of Man must suffer many things and be rejected by the elders and chief priests and scribes, and be killed and be raised up on the third day."
Then Jesus said to all of them, “If anyone wants to come after Me, he must deny himself and take up his cross daily and follow Me.23And He was saying to them all, "If anyone wishes to come after Me, he must deny himself, and take up his cross daily and follow Me.
For whoever wants to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for My sake will save it.24"For whoever wishes to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for My sake, he is the one who will save it.
What does it profit a man to gain the whole world, yet lose or forfeit his very self?25"For what is a man profited if he gains the whole world, and loses or forfeits himself?
If anyone is ashamed of Me and My words, the Son of Man will be ashamed of him when He comes in His glory and in the glory of the Father and of the holy angels.26"For whoever is ashamed of Me and My words, the Son of Man will be ashamed of him when He comes in His glory, and the glory of the Father and of the holy angels.
But I tell you truthfully, some who are standing here will not taste death before they see the kingdom of God.”27"But I say to you truthfully, there are some of those standing here who will not taste death until they see the kingdom of God."
About eight days after Jesus had said these things, He took with Him Peter, John, and James, and went up on a mountain to pray.28Some eight days after these sayings, He took along Peter and John and James, and went up on the mountain to pray.
And as He was praying, the appearance of His face changed, and His clothes became radiantly white.29And while He was praying, the appearance of His face became different, and His clothing became white and gleaming.
Suddenly two men, Moses and Elijah, began talking with Jesus.30And behold, two men were talking with Him; and they were Moses and Elijah,
They appeared in glory and spoke about His departure, which He was about to accomplish at Jerusalem.31who, appearing in glory, were speaking of His departure which He was about to accomplish at Jerusalem.
Meanwhile Peter and his companions were overcome by sleep, but when they awoke, they saw Jesus’ glory and the two men standing with Him.32Now Peter and his companions had been overcome with sleep; but when they were fully awake, they saw His glory and the two men standing with Him.
As Moses and Elijah were leaving, Peter said to Jesus, “Master, it is good for us to be here. Let us put up three shelters—one for You, one for Moses, and one for Elijah.” (He did not know what he was saying.)33And as these were leaving Him, Peter said to Jesus, "Master, it is good for us to be here; let us make three tabernacles: one for You, and one for Moses, and one for Elijah "-- not realizing what he was saying.
While Peter was speaking, a cloud appeared and enveloped them, and they were afraid as they entered the cloud.34While he was saying this, a cloud formed and began to overshadow them; and they were afraid as they entered the cloud.
And a voice came from the cloud, saying, “This is My Son, whom I have chosen. Listen to Him!”35Then a voice came out of the cloud, saying, "This is My Son, My Chosen One; listen to Him!"
After the voice had spoken, only Jesus was present with them. The disciples kept this to themselves, and in those days they did not tell anyone what they had seen.36And when the voice had spoken, Jesus was found alone. And they kept silent, and reported to no one in those days any of the things which they had seen.
The next day, when they came down from the mountain, Jesus was met by a large crowd.37On the next day, when they came down from the mountain, a large crowd met Him.
Suddenly a man in the crowd cried out, “Teacher, I beg You to look at my son, for he is my only child.38And a man from the crowd shouted, saying, "Teacher, I beg You to look at my son, for he is my only boy,
A spirit keeps seizing him, and he screams abruptly. It throws him into convulsions so that he foams at the mouth. It keeps mauling him and rarely departs from him.39and a spirit seizes him, and he suddenly screams, and it throws him into a convulsion with foaming at the mouth; and only with difficulty does it leave him, mauling him as it leaves.
I begged Your disciples to drive it out, but they were unable.”40"I begged Your disciples to cast it out, and they could not."
“O unbelieving and perverse generation!” Jesus replied. “How long must I remain with you and put up with you? Bring your son here.”41And Jesus answered and said, "You unbelieving and perverted generation, how long shall I be with you and put up with you? Bring your son here."
Even while the boy was approaching, the demon slammed him to the ground in a convulsion. But Jesus rebuked the unclean spirit, healed the boy, and gave him back to his father.42While he was still approaching, the demon slammed him to the ground and threw him into a convulsion. But Jesus rebuked the unclean spirit, and healed the boy and gave him back to his father.
And they were all astonished at the greatness of God. While everyone was marveling at all that Jesus was doing, He said to His disciples,43And they were all amazed at the greatness of God. But while everyone was marveling at all that He was doing, He said to His disciples,
“Let these words sink into your ears: The Son of Man is about to be delivered into the hands of men.”44"Let these words sink into your ears; for the Son of Man is going to be delivered into the hands of men."
But they did not understand this statement. It was veiled from them so that they could not comprehend it, and they were afraid to ask Him about it.45But they did not understand this statement, and it was concealed from them so that they would not perceive it; and they were afraid to ask Him about this statement.
Then an argument started among the disciples as to which of them would be the greatest.46An argument started among them as to which of them might be the greatest.
But Jesus, knowing the thoughts of their hearts, had a little child stand beside Him.47But Jesus, knowing what they were thinking in their heart, took a child and stood him by His side,
And He said to them, “Whoever welcomes this little child in My name welcomes Me, and whoever welcomes Me welcomes the One who sent Me. For whoever is the least among all of you, he is the greatest.”48and said to them, "Whoever receives this child in My name receives Me, and whoever receives Me receives Him who sent Me; for the one who is least among all of you, this is the one who is great."
“Master,” said John, “we saw someone driving out demons in Your name, and we tried to stop him, because he does not accompany us.”49John answered and said, "Master, we saw someone casting out demons in Your name; and we tried to prevent him because he does not follow along with us."
“Do not stop him,” Jesus replied, “for whoever is not against you is for you.”50But Jesus said to him, "Do not hinder him; for he who is not against you is for you."
As the day of His ascension approached, Jesus resolutely set out for Jerusalem.51When the days were approaching for His ascension, He was determined to go to Jerusalem;
He sent messengers on ahead, who went into a village of the Samaritans to make arrangements for Him.52and He sent messengers on ahead of Him, and they went and entered a village of the Samaritans to make arrangements for Him.
But the people there refused to welcome Him, because He was heading for Jerusalem.53But they did not receive Him, because He was traveling toward Jerusalem.
When the disciples James and John saw this, they asked, “Lord, do You want us to call down fire from heaven to consume them?”54When His disciples James and John saw this, they said, "Lord, do You want us to command fire to come down from heaven and consume them?"
But Jesus turned and rebuked them.55But He turned and rebuked them, and said, "You do not know what kind of spirit you are of;
And He and His disciples went on to another village.56for the Son of Man did not come to destroy men's lives, but to save them." And they went on to another village.
As they were walking along the road, someone said to Jesus, “I will follow You wherever You go.”57As they were going along the road, someone said to Him, "I will follow You wherever You go."
Jesus replied, “Foxes have dens and birds of the air have nests, but the Son of Man has no place to lay His head.”58And Jesus said to him, "The foxes have holes and the birds of the air have nests, but the Son of Man has nowhere to lay His head."
Then He said to another man, “Follow Me.” The man replied, “Lord, first let me go and bury my father.”59And He said to another, "Follow Me." But he said, "Lord, permit me first to go and bury my father."
But Jesus told him, “Let the dead bury their own dead. You, however, go and proclaim the kingdom of God.”60But He said to him, "Allow the dead to bury their own dead; but as for you, go and proclaim everywhere the kingdom of God."
Still another said, “I will follow You, Lord; but first let me bid farewell to my family.”61Another also said, "I will follow You, Lord; but first permit me to say good-bye to those at home."
Then Jesus declared, “No one who puts his hand to the plow and then looks back is fit for the kingdom of God.”62But Jesus said to him, "No one, after putting his hand to the plow and looking back, is fit for the kingdom of God."
