“But now they mock me, men younger than I am, whose fathers I would have refused to entrust with my sheep dogs.1"But now they mock me, those who are younger than I, whose fathers I disdained too much to put with my sheep dogs.
What use to me was the strength of their hands, since their vigor had left them?2Moreover, the strength of their hands--what use was it to me? Men whose strength had perished;
Gaunt from poverty and hunger, they gnawed the dry land, and the desolate wasteland by night.3gaunt with want and hunger, they would gnaw the parched land, in former time desolate and waste.
They plucked mallow among the shrubs, and the roots of the broom tree were their food.4By the brush they would gather herbs from the salt marshes, and the root of the broom tree was their food.
They were banished from among men, shouted down like thieves,5They were banished from the community--people shouted at them like they would shout at thieves--
so that they lived on the slopes of the wadis, among the rocks and in holes in the ground.6so that they had to live in the dry stream beds, in the holes of the ground, and among the rocks.
They cried out among the shrubs and huddled beneath the nettles.7They brayed like animals among the bushes and were huddled together under the nettles.
A senseless and nameless brood, they were driven off the land.8Sons of senseless and nameless people, they were driven out of the land with whips.
And now they mock me in song; I have become a byword among them.9"And now I have become their taunt song; I have become a byword among them.
They abhor me and keep far from me; they do not hesitate to spit in my face.10They detest me and maintain their distance; they do not hesitate to spit in my face.
Because God has unstrung my bow and afflicted me, they have cast off restraint in my presence.11Because God has untied my tent cord and afflicted me, people throw off all restraint in my presence.
The rabble arises at my right; they lay snares for my feet and build siege ramps against me.12On my right the young rabble rise up; they drive me from place to place, and build up siege ramps against me.
They tear up my path; they profit from my destruction, with no one to restrain them.13They destroy my path; they succeed in destroying me without anyone assisting them.
They advance as through a wide breach; through the ruins they keep rolling in.14They come in as through a wide breach; amid the crash they come rolling in.
Terrors are turned loose against me; they drive away my dignity as by the wind, and my prosperity has passed like a cloud.15Terrors are turned loose on me; they drive away my honor like the wind, and like a cloud my deliverance has passed away.
And now my soul is poured out within me; days of affliction grip me.16"And now my soul pours itself out within me; days of suffering take hold of me.
Night pierces my bones, and my gnawing pains never rest.17Night pierces my bones; my gnawing pains never cease.
With great force He grasps my garment; He seizes me by the collar of my tunic.18With great power God grasps my clothing; he binds me like the collar of my tunic.
He throws me into the mud, and I have become like dust and ashes.19He has flung me into the mud, and I have come to resemble dust and ashes.
I cry out to You for help, but You do not answer; when I stand up, You merely look at me.20I cry out to you, but you do not answer me; I stand up, and you only look at me.
You have ruthlessly turned on me; You oppose me with Your strong hand.21You have become cruel to me; with the strength of your hand you attack me.
You snatch me up into the wind and drive me before it; You toss me about in the storm.22You pick me up on the wind and make me ride on it; you toss me about in the storm.
Yes, I know that You will bring me down to death, to the place appointed for all the living.23I know that you are bringing me to death, to the meeting place for all the living.
Yet no one stretches out his hand to a ruined man when he cries for help in his distress.24"Surely one does not stretch out his hand against a broken man when he cries for help in his distress.
Have I not wept for those in trouble? Has my soul not grieved for the needy?25Have I not wept for the unfortunate? Was not my soul grieved for the poor?
But when I hoped for good, evil came; when I looked for light, darkness fell.26But when I hoped for good, trouble came; when I expected light, then darkness came.
I am churning within and cannot rest; days of affliction confront me.27My heart is in turmoil unceasingly; the days of my affliction confront me.
I go about blackened, but not by the sun. I stand up in the assembly and cry for help.28I go about blackened, but not by the sun; in the assembly I stand up and cry for help.
I have become a brother of jackals, a companion of ostriches.29I have become a brother to jackals and a companion of ostriches.
My skin grows black and peels, and my bones burn with fever.30My skin has turned dark on me; my body is hot with fever.
My harp is tuned to mourning and my flute to the sound of weeping.31My harp is used for mourning and my flute for the sound of weeping.
