God of my praise, do not be silent. | 1For the choir director. A Psalm of David. O God of my praise, Do not be silent! |
For wicked and deceitful mouths open against me; they speak against me with lying tongues. | 2For they have opened the wicked and deceitful mouth against me; They have spoken against me with a lying tongue. |
They surround me with hateful words and attack me without cause. | 3They have also surrounded me with words of hatred, And fought against me without cause. |
In return for my love they accuse me, but I continue to pray. | 4In return for my love they act as my accusers; But I am in prayer. |
They repay me evil for good, and hatred for my love. | 5Thus they have repaid me evil for good And hatred for my love. |
Set a wicked person over him; let an accuser stand at his right hand. | 6Appoint a wicked man over him, And let an accuser stand at his right hand. |
When he is judged, let him be found guilty, and let his prayer be counted as sin. | 7When he is judged, let him come forth guilty, And let his prayer become sin. |
Let his days be few; let another take over his position. | 8Let his days be few; Let another take his office. |
Let his children be fatherless and his wife a widow. | 9Let his children be fatherless And his wife a widow. |
Let his children wander as beggars, searching for food far from their demolished homes. | 10Let his children wander about and beg; And let them seek sustenance far from their ruined homes. |
Let a creditor seize all he has; let strangers plunder what he has worked for. | 11Let the creditor seize all that he has, And let strangers plunder the product of his labor. |
Let no one show him kindness, and let no one be gracious to his fatherless children. | 12Let there be none to extend lovingkindness to him, Nor any to be gracious to his fatherless children. |
Let the line of his descendants be cut off; let their name be blotted out in the next generation. | 13Let his posterity be cut off; In a following generation let their name be blotted out. |
Let the iniquity of his fathers be remembered before the LORD, and do not let his mother's sin be blotted out. | 14Let the iniquity of his fathers be remembered before the LORD, And do not let the sin of his mother be blotted out. |
Let their sins always remain before the LORD, and let him remove all memory of them from the earth. | 15Let them be before the LORD continually, That He may cut off their memory from the earth; |
For he did not think to show kindness, but pursued the suffering, needy, and brokenhearted in order to put them to death. | 16Because he did not remember to show lovingkindness, But persecuted the afflicted and needy man, And the despondent in heart, to put them to death. |
He loved cursing--let it fall on him; he took no delight in blessing--let it be far from him. | 17He also loved cursing, so it came to him; And he did not delight in blessing, so it was far from him. |
He wore cursing like his coat--let it enter his body like water and go into his bones like oil. | 18But he clothed himself with cursing as with his garment, And it entered into his body like water And like oil into his bones. |
Let it be like a robe he wraps around himself, like a belt he always wears. | 19Let it be to him as a garment with which he covers himself, And for a belt with which he constantly girds himself. |
Let this be the LORD's payment to my accusers, to those who speak evil against me. | 20Let this be the reward of my accusers from the LORD, And of those who speak evil against my soul. |
But you, LORD, my Lord, deal kindly with me for your name's sake; because your faithful love is good, rescue me. | 21But You, O GOD, the Lord, deal kindly with me for Your name's sake; Because Your lovingkindness is good, deliver me; |
For I am suffering and needy; my heart is wounded within me. | 22For I am afflicted and needy, And my heart is wounded within me. |
I fade away like a lengthening shadow; I am shaken off like a locust. | 23I am passing like a shadow when it lengthens; I am shaken off like the locust. |
My knees are weak from fasting, and my body is emaciated. | 24My knees are weak from fasting, And my flesh has grown lean, without fatness. |
I have become an object of ridicule to my accusers; when they see me, they shake their heads in scorn. | 25I also have become a reproach to them; When they see me, they wag their head. |
Help me, LORD my God; save me according to your faithful love | 26Help me, O LORD my God; Save me according to Your lovingkindness. |
so they may know that this is your hand and that you, LORD, have done it. | 27And let them know that this is Your hand; You, LORD, have done it. |
Though they curse, you will bless. When they rise up, they will be put to shame, but your servant will rejoice. | 28Let them curse, but You bless; When they arise, they shall be ashamed, But Your servant shall be glad. |
My accusers will be clothed with disgrace; they will wear their shame like a cloak. | 29Let my accusers be clothed with dishonor, And let them cover themselves with their own shame as with a robe. |
I will fervently thank the LORD with my mouth; I will praise him in the presence of many. | 30With my mouth I will give thanks abundantly to the LORD; And in the midst of many I will praise Him. |
For he stands at the right hand of the needy to save him from those who would condemn him. | 31For He stands at the right hand of the needy, To save him from those who judge his soul. |
