Now Elijah the Tishbite, from the Gilead settlers, said to Ahab, "As the LORD God of Israel lives, in whose presence I stand, there will be no dew or rain during these years except by my command!"1Elijah the Tishbite, from Tishbe in Gilead, said to Ahab, "As certainly as the LORD God of Israel lives (whom I serve), there will be no dew or rain in the years ahead unless I give the command."
Then the word of the LORD came to him:2The LORD told him:
"Leave here, turn eastward, and hide at the Wadi Cherith where it enters the Jordan.3"Leave here and travel eastward. Hide out in the Kerith Valley near the Jordan.
You are to drink from the wadi. I have commanded the ravens to provide for you there."4Drink from the stream; I have already told the ravens to bring you food there."
So he proceeded to do what the LORD commanded. Elijah left and lived at the Wadi Cherith where it enters the Jordan.5So he did as the LORD told him; he went and lived in the Kerith Valley near the Jordan.
The ravens kept bringing him bread and meat in the morning and in the evening, and he would drink from the wadi.6The ravens would bring him bread and meat each morning and evening, and he would drink from the stream.
After a while, the wadi dried up because there had been no rain in the land.7After a while, the stream dried up because there had been no rain in the land.
Then the word of the LORD came to him:8The LORD told him,
"Get up, go to Zarephath that belongs to Sidon and stay there. Look, I have commanded a woman who is a widow to provide for you there."9"Get up, go to Zarephath in Sidonian territory, and live there. I have already told a widow who lives there to provide for you."
So Elijah got up and went to Zarephath. When he arrived at the city gate, there was a widow gathering wood. Elijah called to her and said, "Please bring me a little water in a cup and let me drink."10So he got up and went to Zarephath. When he went through the city gate, there was a widow gathering wood. He called out to her, "Please give me a cup of water, so I can take a drink."
As she went to get it, he called to her and said, "Please bring me a piece of bread in your hand."11As she went to get it, he called out to her, "Please bring me a piece of bread."
But she said, "As the LORD your God lives, I don't have anything baked--only a handful of flour in the jar and a bit of oil in the jug. Just now, I am gathering a couple of sticks in order to go prepare it for myself and my son so we can eat it and die."12She said, "As certainly as the LORD your God lives, I have no food, except for a handful of flour in a jar and a little olive oil in a jug. Right now I am gathering a couple of sticks for a fire. Then I'm going home to make one final meal for my son and myself. After we have eaten that, we will die of starvation."
Then Elijah said to her, "Don't be afraid; go and do as you have said. But first make me a small loaf from it and bring it out to me. Afterward, you may make some for yourself and your son,13Elijah said to her, "Don't be afraid. Go and do as you planned. But first make a small cake for me and bring it to me; then make something for yourself and your son.
for this is what the LORD God of Israel says, 'The flour jar will not become empty and the oil jug will not run dry until the day the LORD sends rain on the surface of the land.'"14For this is what the LORD God of Israel says, 'The jar of flour will not be empty and the jug of oil will not run out until the day the LORD makes it rain on the surface of the ground.'"
So she proceeded to do according to the word of Elijah. Then the woman, Elijah, and her household ate for many days.15She went and did as Elijah told her; there was always enough food for Elijah and for her and her family.
The flour jar did not become empty, and the oil jug did not run dry, according to the word of the LORD he had spoken through Elijah.16The jar of flour was never empty and the jug of oil never ran out, just as the LORD had promised through Elijah.
After this, the son of the woman who owned the house became ill. His illness got worse until he stopped breathing.17After this the son of the woman who owned the house got sick. His illness was so severe he could no longer breathe.
She said to Elijah, "Man of God, why are you here? Have you come to call attention to my iniquity so that my son is put to death?"18She asked Elijah, "Why, prophet, have you come to me to confront me with my sin and kill my son?"
But Elijah said to her, "Give me your son." So he took him from her arms, brought him up to the upstairs room where he was staying, and laid him on his own bed.19He said to her, "Hand me your son." He took him from her arms, carried him to the upper room where he was staying, and laid him down on his bed.
Then he cried out to the LORD and said, "LORD my God, have you also brought tragedy on the widow I am staying with by killing her son?"20Then he called out to the LORD, "O LORD, my God, are you also bringing disaster on this widow I am staying with by killing her son?"
Then he stretched himself out over the boy three times. He cried out to the LORD and said, "LORD my God, please let this boy's life come into him again!"21He stretched out over the boy three times and called out to the LORD, "O LORD, my God, please let this boy's breath return to him."
So the LORD listened to Elijah, and the boy's life came into him again, and he lived.22The LORD answered Elijah's prayer; the boy's breath returned to him and he lived.
Then Elijah took the boy, brought him down from the upstairs room into the house, and gave him to his mother. Elijah said, "Look, your son is alive."23Elijah took the boy, brought him down from the upper room to the house, and handed him to his mother. Elijah then said, "See, your son is alive!"
Then the woman said to Elijah, "Now I know you are a man of God and the LORD's word from your mouth is true."24The woman said to Elijah, "Now I know that you are a prophet and that the LORD really does speak through you."
