Afterward he was traveling from one town and village to another, preaching and telling the good news of the kingdom of God. The Twelve were with him,1Some time afterward he went on through towns and villages, preaching and proclaiming the good news of the kingdom of God. The twelve were with him,
and also some women who had been healed of evil spirits and sicknesses: Mary, called Magdalene (seven demons had come out of her);2and also some women who had been healed of evil spirits and disabilities: Mary (called Magdalene), from whom seven demons had gone out,
Joanna the wife of Chuza, Herod's steward; Susanna; and many others who were supporting them from their possessions.3and Joanna the wife of Cuza (Herod's household manager), Susanna, and many others who provided for them out of their own resources.
As a large crowd was gathering, and people were coming to Jesus from every town, he said in a parable:4While a large crowd was gathering and people were coming to Jesus from one town after another, he spoke to them in a parable:
"A sower went out to sow his seed. As he sowed, some seed fell along the path; it was trampled on, and the birds of the sky devoured it.5"A sower went out to sow his seed. And as he sowed, some fell along the path and was trampled on, and the wild birds devoured it.
Other seed fell on the rock; when it grew up, it withered away, since it lacked moisture.6Other seed fell on rock, and when it came up, it withered because it had no moisture.
Other seed fell among thorns; the thorns grew up with it and choked it.7Other seed fell among the thorns, and they grew up with it and choked it.
Still other seed fell on good ground; when it grew up, it produced fruit: a hundred times what was sown." As he said this, he called out, "Let anyone who has ears to hear listen."8But other seed fell on good soil and grew, and it produced a hundred times as much grain." As he said this, he called out, "The one who has ears to hear had better listen!"
Then his disciples asked him, "What does this parable mean?"9Then his disciples asked him what this parable meant.
So he said, "The secrets of the kingdom of God have been given for you to know, but to the rest it is in parables, so that Looking they may not see, and hearing they may not understand.10He said, "You have been given the opportunity to know the secrets of the kingdom of God, but for others they are in parables, so that although they see they may not see, and although they hear they may not understand.
"This is the meaning of the parable: The seed is the word of God.11"Now the parable means this: The seed is the word of God.
The seed along the path are those who have heard and then the devil comes and takes away the word from their hearts, so that they may not believe and be saved.12Those along the path are the ones who have heard; then the devil comes and takes away the word from their hearts, so that they may not believe and be saved.
And the seed on the rock are those who, when they hear, receive the word with joy. Having no root, these believe for a while and fall away in a time of testing.13Those on the rock are the ones who receive the word with joy when they hear it, but they have no root. They believe for a while, but in a time of testing fall away.
As for the seed that fell among thorns, these are the ones who, when they have heard, go on their way and are choked with worries, riches, and pleasures of life, and produce no mature fruit.14As for the seed that fell among thorns, these are the ones who hear, but as they go on their way they are choked by the worries and riches and pleasures of life, and their fruit does not mature.
But the seed in the good ground--these are the ones who, having heard the word with an honest and good heart, hold on to it and by enduring, produce fruit.15But as for the seed that landed on good soil, these are the ones who, after hearing the word, cling to it with an honest and good heart, and bear fruit with steadfast endurance.
"No one, after lighting a lamp, covers it with a basket or puts it under a bed, but puts it on a lampstand so that those who come in may see its light.16"No one lights a lamp and then covers it with a jar or puts it under a bed, but puts it on a lampstand so that those who come in can see the light.
For nothing is concealed that won't be revealed, and nothing hidden that won't be made known and brought to light.17For nothing is hidden that will not be revealed, and nothing concealed that will not be made known and brought to light.
Therefore take care how you listen. For whoever has, more will be given to him; and whoever does not have, even what he thinks he has will be taken away from him."18So listen carefully, for whoever has will be given more, but whoever does not have, even what he thinks he has will be taken from him."
Then his mother and brothers came to him, but they could not meet with him because of the crowd.19Now Jesus' mother and his brothers came to him, but they could not get near him because of the crowd.
He was told, "Your mother and your brothers are standing outside, wanting to see you."20So he was told, "Your mother and your brothers are standing outside, wanting to see you."
But he replied to them, "My mother and my brothers are those who hear and do the word of God."21But he replied to them, "My mother and my brothers are those who hear the word of God and do it."
One day he and his disciples got into a boat, and he told them, "Let's cross over to the other side of the lake." So they set out,22One day Jesus got into a boat with his disciples and said to them, "Let's go across to the other side of the lake." So they set out,
and as they were sailing he fell asleep. Then a fierce windstorm came down on the lake; they were being swamped and were in danger.23and as they sailed he fell asleep. Now a violent windstorm came down on the lake, and the boat started filling up with water, and they were in danger.
They came and woke him up, saying, "Master, Master, we're going to die!" Then he got up and rebuked the wind and the raging waves. So they ceased, and there was a calm.24They came and woke him, saying, "Master, Master, we are about to die!" So he got up and rebuked the wind and the raging waves; they died down, and it was calm.
He said to them, "Where is your faith?" They were fearful and amazed, asking one another, "Who then is this? He commands even the winds and the waves, and they obey him!"25Then he said to them, "Where is your faith?" But they were afraid and amazed, saying to one another, "Who then is this? He commands even the winds and the water, and they obey him!"
Then they sailed to the region of the Gerasenes, which is opposite Galilee.26So they sailed over to the region of the Gerasenes, which is opposite Galilee.
When he got out on land, a demon-possessed man from the town met him. For a long time he had worn no clothes and did not stay in a house but in the tombs.27As Jesus stepped ashore, a certain man from the town met him who was possessed by demons. For a long time this man had worn no clothes and had not lived in a house, but among the tombs.
When he saw Jesus, he cried out, fell down before him, and said in a loud voice, "What do you have to do with me, Jesus, Son of the Most High God? I beg you, don't torment me!"28When he saw Jesus, he cried out, fell down before him, and shouted with a loud voice, "Leave me alone, Jesus, Son of the Most High God! I beg you, do not torment me!"
For he had commanded the unclean spirit to come out of the man. Many times it had seized him, and though he was guarded, bound by chains and shackles, he would snap the restraints and be driven by the demon into deserted places.29For Jesus had started commanding the evil spirit to come out of the man. (For it had seized him many times, so he would be bound with chains and shackles and kept under guard. But he would break the restraints and be driven by the demon into deserted places.)
"What is your name?" Jesus asked him. "Legion," he said, because many demons had entered him.30Jesus then asked him, "What is your name?" He said, "Legion," because many demons had entered him.
And they begged him not to banish them to the abyss.31And they began to beg him not to order them to depart into the abyss.
A large herd of pigs was there, feeding on the hillside. The demons begged him to permit them to enter the pigs, and he gave them permission.32Now a large herd of pigs was feeding there on the hillside, and the demonic spirits begged Jesus to let them go into them. He gave them permission.
The demons came out of the man and entered the pigs, and the herd rushed down the steep bank into the lake and drowned.33So the demons came out of the man and went into the pigs, and the herd of pigs rushed down the steep slope into the lake and drowned.
When the men who tended them saw what had happened, they ran off and reported it in the town and in the countryside.34When the herdsmen saw what had happened, they ran off and spread the news in the town and countryside.
Then people went out to see what had happened. They came to Jesus and found the man the demons had departed from, sitting at Jesus's feet, dressed and in his right mind. And they were afraid.35So the people went out to see what had happened, and they came to Jesus. They found the man from whom the demons had gone out, sitting at Jesus' feet, clothed and in his right mind, and they were afraid.
Meanwhile, the eyewitnesses reported to them how the demon-possessed man was delivered.36Those who had seen it told them how the man who had been demon-possessed had been healed.
Then all the people of the Gerasene region asked him to leave them, because they were gripped by great fear. So getting into the boat, he returned.37Then all the people of the Gerasenes and the surrounding region asked Jesus to leave them alone, for they were seized with great fear. So he got into the boat and left.
The man from whom the demons had departed begged him earnestly to be with him. But he sent him away and said,38The man from whom the demons had gone out begged to go with him, but Jesus sent him away, saying,
"Go back to your home, and tell all that God has done for you." And off he went, proclaiming throughout the town how much Jesus had done for him.39"Return to your home, and declare what God has done for you." So he went away, proclaiming throughout the whole town what Jesus had done for him.
When Jesus returned, the crowd welcomed him, for they were all expecting him.40Now when Jesus returned, the crowd welcomed him, because they were all waiting for him.
Just then, a man named Jairus came. He was a leader of the synagogue. He fell down at Jesus's feet and pleaded with him to come to his house,41Then a man named Jairus, who was a ruler of the synagogue, came up. Falling at Jesus' feet, he pleaded with him to come to his house,
because he had an only daughter about twelve years old, and she was dying. While he was going, the crowds were nearly crushing him.42because he had an only daughter, about twelve years old, and she was dying. As Jesus was on his way, the crowds pressed around him.
A woman suffering from bleeding for twelve years, who had spent all she had on doctors and yet could not be healed by any,43Now a woman was there who had been suffering from a hemorrhage for twelve years but could not be healed by anyone.
approached from behind and touched the end of his robe. Instantly her bleeding stopped.44She came up behind Jesus and touched the edge of his cloak, and at once the bleeding stopped.
"Who touched me?" Jesus asked. When they all denied it, Peter said, "Master, the crowds are hemming you in and pressing against you."45Then Jesus asked, "Who was it who touched me?" When they all denied it, Peter said, "Master, the crowds are surrounding you and pressing against you!"
"Someone did touch me," said Jesus. "I know that power has gone out from me."46But Jesus said, "Someone touched me, for I know that power has gone out from me."
When the woman saw that she was discovered, she came trembling and fell down before him. In the presence of all the people, she declared the reason she had touched him and how she was instantly healed.47When the woman saw that she could not escape notice, she came trembling and fell down before him. In the presence of all the people, she explained why she had touched him and how she had been immediately healed.
"Daughter," he said to her, "your faith has saved you. Go in peace."48Then he said to her, "Daughter, your faith has made you well. Go in peace."
While he was still speaking, someone came from the synagogue leader's house and said, "Your daughter is dead. Don't bother the teacher anymore."49While he was still speaking, someone from the synagogue ruler's house came and said, "Your daughter is dead; do not trouble the teacher any longer."
When Jesus heard it, he answered him, "Don't be afraid. Only believe, and she will be saved."50But when Jesus heard this, he told him, "Do not be afraid; just believe, and she will be healed."
After he came to the house, he let no one enter with him except Peter, John, James, and the child's father and mother.51Now when he came to the house, Jesus did not let anyone go in with him except Peter, John, and James, and the child's father and mother.
Everyone was crying and mourning for her. But he said, "Stop crying, because she is not dead but asleep."52Now they were all wailing and mourning for her, but he said, "Stop your weeping; she is not dead but asleep."
They laughed at him, because they knew she was dead.53And they began making fun of him, because they knew that she was dead.
So he took her by the hand and called out, "Child, get up!"54But Jesus gently took her by the hand and said, "Child, get up."
Her spirit returned, and she got up at once. Then he gave orders that she be given something to eat.55Her spirit returned, and she got up immediately. Then he told them to give her something to eat.
Her parents were astounded, but he instructed them to tell no one what had happened.56Her parents were astonished, but he ordered them to tell no one what had happened.
