On one occasion, while the crowd was pressing in on him to hear the word of God, he was standing by the lake of Gennesaret, | 1One day, as the crowd was pressing in on him to listen to God's word, Jesus was standing by the lake of Gennesaret. |
and he saw two boats by the lake, but the fishermen had gone out of them and were washing their nets. | 2He saw two boats lying on the shore, but the fishermen had stepped out of them and were washing their nets. |
Getting into one of the boats, which was Simon’s, he asked him to put out a little from the land. And he sat down and taught the people from the boat. | 3So Jesus got into one of the boats (the one that belonged to Simon) and asked him to push out a little from the shore. Then he sat down and began to teach the crowds from the boat. |
And when he had finished speaking, he said to Simon, “Put out into the deep and let down your nets for a catch.” | 4When he had finished speaking, he told Simon, "Push out into deep water, and lower your nets for a catch." |
And Simon answered, “Master, we toiled all night and took nothing! But at your word I will let down the nets.” | 5Simon answered, "Master, we have worked hard all night and caught nothing. But if you say so, I'll lower the nets." |
And when they had done this, they enclosed a large number of fish, and their nets were breaking. | 6After the men had done this, they caught so many fish that the nets began to tear. |
They signaled to their partners in the other boat to come and help them. And they came and filled both the boats, so that they began to sink. | 7So they signaled to their partners in the other boat to come and help them. They came and filled both boats until the boats began to sink. |
But when Simon Peter saw it, he fell down at Jesus’ knees, saying, “Depart from me, for I am a sinful man, O Lord.” | 8When Simon Peter saw this, he fell down at Jesus' knees and said, "Leave me, Lord! I am a sinful man!"— |
For he and all who were with him were astonished at the catch of fish that they had taken, | 9because Simon and all the people who were with him were amazed at the number of fish they had caught, |
and so also were James and John, sons of Zebedee, who were partners with Simon. And Jesus said to Simon, “Do not be afraid; from now on you will be catching men.” | 10and so were James and John, Zebedee's sons and Simon's partners. Then Jesus told Simon, "Stop being afraid. From now on you will be catching people." |
And when they had brought their boats to land, they left everything and followed him. | 11So when they brought the boats to shore, they left everything and followed Jesus. |
While he was in one of the cities, there came a man full of leprosy. And when he saw Jesus, he fell on his face and begged him, “Lord, if you will, you can make me clean.” | 12One day, while Jesus was in one of the cities, a man covered with leprosy saw Jesus and fell on his face, begging him, "Lord, if you want to, you can make me clean." |
And Jesus stretched out his hand and touched him, saying, “I will; be clean.” And immediately the leprosy left him. | 13So Jesus reached out his hand and touched him, saying, "I do want to. Be clean!" Instantly the leprosy left him. |
And he charged him to tell no one, but “go and show yourself to the priest, and make an offering for your cleansing, as Moses commanded, for a proof to them.” | 14Then Jesus ordered him, "Don't tell anyone. Instead, go and show yourself to the priest and make an offering for your cleansing, just as Moses commanded, as proof to the authorities." |
But now even more the report about him went abroad, and great crowds gathered to hear him and to be healed of their infirmities. | 15But the news about Jesus spread even more, and many crowds began gathering to hear him and to be healed of their diseases. |
But he would withdraw to desolate places and pray. | 16However, he continued his habit of retiring to deserted places and praying. |
On one of those days, as he was teaching, Pharisees and teachers of the law were sitting there, who had come from every village of Galilee and Judea and from Jerusalem. And the power of the Lord was with him to heal. | 17One day, as Jesus was teaching, some Pharisees and teachers of the Law happened to be sitting nearby. The people had come from every village in Galilee and Judea and from Jerusalem. The power of the Lord was present to heal them. |
And behold, some men were bringing on a bed a man who was paralyzed, and they were seeking to bring him in and lay him before Jesus, | 18Some men were bringing a paralyzed man on a stretcher. They were trying to take him into the house and place him in front of Jesus. |
but finding no way to bring him in, because of the crowd, they went up on the roof and let him down with his bed through the tiles into the midst before Jesus. | 19When they couldn't find a way to get him in because of the crowd, they went up on the roof and let him down on his stretcher through the tiles into the middle of the room, right in front of Jesus. |
And when he saw their faith, he said, “Man, your sins are forgiven you.” | 20When Jesus saw their faith, he said, "Mister, your sins are forgiven." |
And the scribes and the Pharisees began to question, saying, “Who is this who speaks blasphemies? Who can forgive sins but God alone?” | 21The scribes and the Pharisees began to argue among themselves, saying, "Who is this man who is uttering blasphemies? Who can forgive sins but God alone?" |
When Jesus perceived their thoughts, he answered them, “Why do you question in your hearts? | 22Because Jesus knew that they were arguing, he asked them, "Why are you arguing about this among yourselves? |
Which is easier, to say, ‘Your sins are forgiven you,’ or to say, ‘Rise and walk’? | 23Which is easier: to say, 'Your sins are forgiven,' or to say, 'Get up and walk'? |
But that you may know that the Son of Man has authority on earth to forgive sins”—he said to the man who was paralyzed— “I say to you, rise, pick up your bed and go home.” | 24But so you'll know that the Son of Man has authority on earth to forgive sins…." he told the paralyzed man, "I say to you: Get up, pick up your stretcher, and go home!" |
And immediately he rose up before them and picked up what he had been lying on and went home, glorifying God. | 25So the man immediately stood up in front of them and picked up what he had been lying on. Then he went home, praising God. |
And amazement seized them all, and they glorified God and were filled with awe, saying, “We have seen extraordinary things today.” | 26Amazement seized all the people, and they began to praise God. They were filled with fear and declared, "We have seen wonderful things today!" |
After this he went out and saw a tax collector named Levi, sitting at the tax booth. And he said to him, “Follow me.” | 27After that, Jesus went out and saw a tax collector named Levi sitting at the tax collector's desk. He told him, "Follow me!" |
And leaving everything, he rose and followed him. | 28So Levi left everything behind, got up, and followed him. |
And Levi made him a great feast in his house, and there was a large company of tax collectors and others reclining at table with them. | 29Later, Levi gave a large banquet at his home for Jesus. A large crowd of tax collectors and others were eating with them. |
And the Pharisees and their scribes grumbled at his disciples, saying, “Why do you eat and drink with tax collectors and sinners?” | 30The Pharisees and their scribes started complaining to Jesus' disciples, "Why do you eat and drink with tax collectors and sinners?" |
And Jesus answered them, “Those who are well have no need of a physician, but those who are sick. | 31But Jesus answered them, "Healthy people don't need a physician, but sick people do. |
I have not come to call the righteous but sinners to repentance.” | 32I have not come to call righteous people, but sinners, to repentance." |
And they said to him, “The disciples of John fast often and offer prayers, and so do the disciples of the Pharisees, but yours eat and drink.” | 33Then they told him, "John's disciples frequently fast and pray, and so do those of the Pharisees. But your disciples keep right on eating and drinking." |
And Jesus said to them, “Can you make wedding guests fast while the bridegroom is with them? | 34But Jesus told them, "You can't force the wedding guests to fast while the groom is still with them, can you? |
The days will come when the bridegroom is taken away from them, and then they will fast in those days.” | 35But the time will come when the groom will be taken away from them, and at that time they will fast." |
He also told them a parable: “No one tears a piece from a new garment and puts it on an old garment. If he does, he will tear the new, and the piece from the new will not match the old. | 36Then he told them a parable: "No one tears a piece of cloth from a new garment and sews it on an old garment. If he does, the new cloth will tear, and the piece from the new won't match the old. |
And no one puts new wine into old wineskins. If he does, the new wine will burst the skins and it will be spilled, and the skins will be destroyed. | 37And no one pours new wine into old wineskins. If he does, the new wine will make the skins burst, the wine will be spilled, and the skins will be ruined. |
But new wine must be put into fresh wineskins. | 38Instead, new wine is to be poured into fresh wineskins. |
And no one after drinking old wine desires new, for he says, ‘The old is good.’” | 39No one who has been drinking old wine wants new wine, because he says, 'The old wine is good enough!'" |
