English Standard Version | King James Bible |
For since the law has but a shadow of the good things to come instead of the true form of these realities, it can never, by the same sacrifices that are continually offered every year, make perfect those who draw near. | 1For the law having a shadow of good things to come, and not the very image of the things, can never with those sacrifices which they offered year by year continually make the comers thereunto perfect. |
Otherwise, would they not have ceased to be offered, since the worshipers, having once been cleansed, would no longer have any consciousness of sins? | 2For then would they not have ceased to be offered? because that the worshippers once purged should have had no more conscience of sins. |
But in these sacrifices there is a reminder of sins every year. | 3But in those sacrifices there is a remembrance again made of sins every year. |
For it is impossible for the blood of bulls and goats to take away sins. | 4For it is not possible that the blood of bulls and of goats should take away sins. |
Consequently, when Christ came into the world, he said, “Sacrifices and offerings you have not desired, but a body have you prepared for me; | 5Wherefore when he cometh into the world, he saith, Sacrifice and offering thou wouldest not, but a body hast thou prepared me: |
in burnt offerings and sin offerings you have taken no pleasure. | 6In burnt offerings and sacrifices for sin thou hast had no pleasure. |
Then I said, ‘Behold, I have come to do your will, O God, as it is written of me in the scroll of the book.’” | 7Then said I, Lo, I come (in the volume of the book it is written of me,) to do thy will, O God. |
When he said above, “You have neither desired nor taken pleasure in sacrifices and offerings and burnt offerings and sin offerings” (these are offered according to the law), | 8Above when he said, Sacrifice and offering and burnt offerings and offering for sin thou wouldest not, neither hadst pleasure therein; which are offered by the law; |
then he added, “Behold, I have come to do your will.” He does away with the first in order to establish the second. | 9Then said he, Lo, I come to do thy will, O God. He taketh away the first, that he may establish the second. |
And by that will we have been sanctified through the offering of the body of Jesus Christ once for all. | 10By the which will we are sanctified through the offering of the body of Jesus Christ once for all. |
And every priest stands daily at his service, offering repeatedly the same sacrifices, which can never take away sins. | 11And every priest standeth daily ministering and offering oftentimes the same sacrifices, which can never take away sins: |
But when Christ had offered for all time a single sacrifice for sins, he sat down at the right hand of God, | 12But this man, after he had offered one sacrifice for sins for ever, sat down on the right hand of God; |
waiting from that time until his enemies should be made a footstool for his feet. | 13From henceforth expecting till his enemies be made his footstool. |
For by a single offering he has perfected for all time those who are being sanctified. | 14For by one offering he hath perfected for ever them that are sanctified. |
And the Holy Spirit also bears witness to us; for after saying, | 15Whereof the Holy Ghost also is a witness to us: for after that he had said before, |
“This is the covenant that I will make with them after those days, declares the Lord: I will put my laws on their hearts, and write them on their minds,” | 16This is the covenant that I will make with them after those days, saith the Lord, I will put my laws into their hearts, and in their minds will I write them; |
then he adds, “I will remember their sins and their lawless deeds no more.” | 17And their sins and iniquities will I remember no more. |
Where there is forgiveness of these, there is no longer any offering for sin. | 18Now where remission of these is, there is no more offering for sin. |
Therefore, brothers, since we have confidence to enter the holy places by the blood of Jesus, | 19Having therefore, brethren, boldness to enter into the holiest by the blood of Jesus, |
by the new and living way that he opened for us through the curtain, that is, through his flesh, | 20By a new and living way, which he hath consecrated for us, through the veil, that is to say, his flesh; |
and since we have a great priest over the house of God, | 21And having an high priest over the house of God; |
let us draw near with a true heart in full assurance of faith, with our hearts sprinkled clean from an evil conscience and our bodies washed with pure water. | 22Let us draw near with a true heart in full assurance of faith, having our hearts sprinkled from an evil conscience, and our bodies washed with pure water. |
Let us hold fast the confession of our hope without wavering, for he who promised is faithful. | 23Let us hold fast the profession of our faith without wavering; (for he is faithful that promised;) |
And let us consider how to stir up one another to love and good works, | 24And let us consider one another to provoke unto love and to good works: |
not neglecting to meet together, as is the habit of some, but encouraging one another, and all the more as you see the Day drawing near. | 25Not forsaking the assembling of ourselves together, as the manner of some is; but exhorting one another: and so much the more, as ye see the day approaching. |
For if we go on sinning deliberately after receiving the knowledge of the truth, there no longer remains a sacrifice for sins, | 26For if we sin wilfully after that we have received the knowledge of the truth, there remaineth no more sacrifice for sins, |
but a fearful expectation of judgment, and a fury of fire that will consume the adversaries. | 27But a certain fearful looking for of judgment and fiery indignation, which shall devour the adversaries. |
Anyone who has set aside the law of Moses dies without mercy on the evidence of two or three witnesses. | 28He that despised Moses' law died without mercy under two or three witnesses: |
How much worse punishment, do you think, will be deserved by the one who has trampled underfoot the Son of God, and has profaned the blood of the covenant by which he was sanctified, and has outraged the Spirit of grace? | 29Of how much sorer punishment, suppose ye, shall he be thought worthy, who hath trodden under foot the Son of God, and hath counted the blood of the covenant, wherewith he was sanctified, an unholy thing, and hath done despite unto the Spirit of grace? |
For we know him who said, “Vengeance is mine; I will repay.” And again, “The Lord will judge his people.” | 30For we know him that hath said, Vengeance belongeth unto me, I will recompense, saith the Lord. And again, The Lord shall judge his people. |
It is a fearful thing to fall into the hands of the living God. | 31It is a fearful thing to fall into the hands of the living God. |
But recall the former days when, after you were enlightened, you endured a hard struggle with sufferings, | 32But call to remembrance the former days, in which, after ye were illuminated, ye endured a great fight of afflictions; |
sometimes being publicly exposed to reproach and affliction, and sometimes being partners with those so treated. | 33Partly, whilst ye were made a gazingstock both by reproaches and afflictions; and partly, whilst ye became companions of them that were so used. |
For you had compassion on those in prison, and you joyfully accepted the plundering of your property, since you knew that you yourselves had a better possession and an abiding one. | 34For ye had compassion of me in my bonds, and took joyfully the spoiling of your goods, knowing in yourselves that ye have in heaven a better and an enduring substance. |
Therefore do not throw away your confidence, which has a great reward. | 35Cast not away therefore your confidence, which hath great recompence of reward. |
For you have need of endurance, so that when you have done the will of God you may receive what is promised. | 36For ye have need of patience, that, after ye have done the will of God, ye might receive the promise. |
For, “Yet a little while, and the coming one will come and will not delay; | 37For yet a little while, and he that shall come will come, and will not tarry. |
but my righteous one shall live by faith, and if he shrinks back, my soul has no pleasure in him.” | 38Now the just shall live by faith: but if any man draw back, my soul shall have no pleasure in him. |
But we are not of those who shrink back and are destroyed, but of those who have faith and preserve their souls. | 39But we are not of them who draw back unto perdition; but of them that believe to the saving of the soul. |
