The beginning of the gospel of Jesus Christ, the Son of God.1The beginning of the gospel of Jesus Christ, the Son of God.
As it is written in Isaiah the prophet, “Behold, I send my messenger before your face, who will prepare your way,2As it is written in Isaiah the prophet, "Look, I am sending my messenger ahead of you, who will prepare your way,
the voice of one crying in the wilderness: ‘Prepare the way of the Lord, make his paths straight,’”3the voice of one shouting in the wilderness, 'Prepare the way for the Lord, make his paths straight.'"
John appeared, baptizing in the wilderness and proclaiming a baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sins.4In the wilderness John the baptizer began preaching a baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sins.
And all the country of Judea and all Jerusalem were going out to him and were being baptized by him in the river Jordan, confessing their sins.5People from the whole Judean countryside and all of Jerusalem were going out to him, and he was baptizing them in the Jordan River as they confessed their sins.
Now John was clothed with camel’s hair and wore a leather belt around his waist and ate locusts and wild honey.6John wore a garment made of camel's hair with a leather belt around his waist, and he ate locusts and wild honey.
And he preached, saying, “After me comes he who is mightier than I, the strap of whose sandals I am not worthy to stoop down and untie.7He proclaimed, "One more powerful than I am is coming after me; I am not worthy to bend down and untie the strap of his sandals.
I have baptized you with water, but he will baptize you with the Holy Spirit.”8I baptize you with water, but he will baptize you with the Holy Spirit."
In those days Jesus came from Nazareth of Galilee and was baptized by John in the Jordan.9Now in those days Jesus came from Nazareth in Galilee and was baptized by John in the Jordan River.
And when he came up out of the water, immediately he saw the heavens being torn open and the Spirit descending on him like a dove.10And just as Jesus was coming up out of the water, he saw the heavens splitting apart and the Spirit descending on him like a dove.
And a voice came from heaven, “You are my beloved Son; with you I am well pleased.”11And a voice came from heaven: "You are my one dear Son; in you I take great delight."
The Spirit immediately drove him out into the wilderness.12The Spirit immediately drove him into the wilderness.
And he was in the wilderness forty days, being tempted by Satan. And he was with the wild animals, and the angels were ministering to him.13He was in the wilderness forty days, enduring temptations from Satan. He was with wild animals, and angels were ministering to his needs.
Now after John was arrested, Jesus came into Galilee, proclaiming the gospel of God,14Now after John was imprisoned, Jesus went into Galilee and proclaimed the gospel of God.
and saying, “The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God is at hand; repent and believe in the gospel.”15He said, "The time is fulfilled and the kingdom of God is near. Repent and believe the gospel!"
Passing alongside the Sea of Galilee, he saw Simon and Andrew the brother of Simon casting a net into the sea, for they were fishermen.16As he went along the Sea of Galilee, he saw Simon and Andrew, Simon's brother, casting a net into the sea (for they were fishermen).
And Jesus said to them, “Follow me, and I will make you become fishers of men.”17Jesus said to them, "Follow me, and I will turn you into fishers of people."
And immediately they left their nets and followed him.18They left their nets immediately and followed him.
And going on a little farther, he saw James the son of Zebedee and John his brother, who were in their boat mending the nets.19Going on a little farther, he saw James, the son of Zebedee, and John his brother in their boat mending nets.
And immediately he called them, and they left their father Zebedee in the boat with the hired servants and followed him.20Immediately he called them, and they left their father Zebedee in the boat with the hired men and followed him.
And they went into Capernaum, and immediately on the Sabbath he entered the synagogue and was teaching.21Then they went to Capernaum. When the Sabbath came, Jesus went into the synagogue and began to teach.
And they were astonished at his teaching, for he taught them as one who had authority, and not as the scribes.22The people there were amazed by his teaching, because he taught them like one who had authority, not like the experts in the law.
And immediately there was in their synagogue a man with an unclean spirit. And he cried out,23Just then there was a man in their synagogue with an unclean spirit, and he cried out,
“What have you to do with us, Jesus of Nazareth? Have you come to destroy us? I know who you are—the Holy One of God.”24"Leave us alone, Jesus the Nazarene! Have you come to destroy us? I know who you are--the Holy One of God!"
But Jesus rebuked him, saying, “Be silent, and come out of him!”25But Jesus rebuked him: "Silence! Come out of him!"
And the unclean spirit, convulsing him and crying out with a loud voice, came out of him.26After throwing him into convulsions, the unclean spirit cried out with a loud voice and came out of him.
And they were all amazed, so that they questioned among themselves, saying, “What is this? A new teaching with authority! He commands even the unclean spirits, and they obey him.”27They were all amazed so that they asked each other, "What is this? A new teaching with authority! He even commands the unclean spirits and they obey him."
And at once his fame spread everywhere throughout all the surrounding region of Galilee.28So the news about him spread quickly throughout all the region around Galilee.
And immediately he left the synagogue and entered the house of Simon and Andrew, with James and John.29Now as soon as they left the synagogue, they entered Simon and Andrew's house, with James and John.
Now Simon’s mother-in-law lay ill with a fever, and immediately they told him about her.30Simon's mother-in-law was lying down, sick with a fever, so they spoke to Jesus at once about her.
And he came and took her by the hand and lifted her up, and the fever left her, and she began to serve them.31He came and raised her up by gently taking her hand. Then the fever left her and she began to serve them.
That evening at sundown they brought to him all who were sick or oppressed by demons.32When it was evening, after sunset, they brought to him all who were sick and demon-possessed.
And the whole city was gathered together at the door.33The whole town gathered by the door.
And he healed many who were sick with various diseases, and cast out many demons. And he would not permit the demons to speak, because they knew him.34So he healed many who were sick with various diseases and drove out many demons. But he would not permit the demons to speak, because they knew him.
And rising very early in the morning, while it was still dark, he departed and went out to a desolate place, and there he prayed.35Then Jesus got up early in the morning when it was still very dark, departed, and went out to a deserted place, and there he spent time in prayer.
And Simon and those who were with him searched for him,36Simon and his companions searched for him.
and they found him and said to him, “Everyone is looking for you.”37When they found him, they said, "Everyone is looking for you."
And he said to them, “Let us go on to the next towns, that I may preach there also, for that is why I came out.”38He replied, "Let us go elsewhere, into the surrounding villages, so that I can preach there too. For that is what I came out here to do."
And he went throughout all Galilee, preaching in their synagogues and casting out demons.39So he went into all of Galilee preaching in their synagogues and casting out demons.
And a leper came to him, imploring him, and kneeling said to him, “If you will, you can make me clean.”40Now a leper came to him and fell to his knees, asking for help. "If you are willing, you can make me clean," he said.
Moved with pity, he stretched out his hand and touched him and said to him, “I will; be clean.”41Moved with compassion, Jesus stretched out his hand and touched him, saying, "I am willing. Be clean!"
And immediately the leprosy left him, and he was made clean.42The leprosy left him at once, and he was clean.
And Jesus sternly charged him and sent him away at once,43Immediately Jesus sent the man away with a very strong warning.
and said to him, “See that you say nothing to anyone, but go, show yourself to the priest and offer for your cleansing what Moses commanded, for a proof to them.”44He told him, "See that you do not say anything to anyone, but go, show yourself to a priest, and bring the offering that Moses commanded for your cleansing, as a testimony to them."
But he went out and began to talk freely about it, and to spread the news, so that Jesus could no longer openly enter a town, but was out in desolate places, and people were coming to him from every quarter.45But as the man went out he began to announce it publicly and spread the story widely, so that Jesus was no longer able to enter any town openly but stayed outside in remote places. Still they kept coming to him from everywhere.
