Before the Passover Festival, Jesus knew that His hour had come to depart from this world to the Father. Having loved His own who were in the world, He loved them to the end. | 1It was just before the Passover Festival. Jesus knew that the hour had come for him to leave this world and go to the Father. Having loved his own who were in the world, he loved them to the end. |
Now by the time of supper, the Devil had already put it into the heart of Judas, Simon Iscariot's son, to betray Him. | 2The evening meal was in progress, and the devil had already prompted Judas, the son of Simon Iscariot, to betray Jesus. |
Jesus knew that the Father had given everything into His hands, that He had come from God, and that He was going back to God. | 3Jesus knew that the Father had put all things under his power, and that he had come from God and was returning to God; |
So He got up from supper, laid aside His robe, took a towel, and tied it around Himself. | 4so he got up from the meal, took off his outer clothing, and wrapped a towel around his waist. |
Next, He poured water into a basin and began to wash His disciples' feet and to dry them with the towel tied around Him. | 5After that, he poured water into a basin and began to wash his disciples' feet, drying them with the towel that was wrapped around him. |
He came to Simon Peter, who asked Him, "Lord, are You going to wash my feet?" | 6He came to Simon Peter, who said to him, "Lord, are you going to wash my feet?" |
Jesus answered him, "What I'm doing you don't understand now, but afterward you will know."" | 7Jesus replied, "You do not realize now what I am doing, but later you will understand." |
You will never wash my feet--ever!" Peter said. Jesus replied, "If I don't wash you, you have no part with Me." | 8"No," said Peter, "you shall never wash my feet." Jesus answered, "Unless I wash you, you have no part with me." |
Simon Peter said to Him, "Lord, not only my feet, but also my hands and my head." | 9"Then, Lord," Simon Peter replied, "not just my feet but my hands and my head as well!" |
"One who has bathed," Jesus told him, "doesn't need to wash anything except his feet, but he is completely clean. You are clean, but not all of you." | 10Jesus answered, "Those who have had a bath need only to wash their feet; their whole body is clean. And you are clean, though not every one of you." |
For He knew who would betray Him. This is why He said, "You are not all clean." | 11For he knew who was going to betray him, and that was why he said not every one was clean. |
When Jesus had washed their feet and put on His robe, He reclined again and said to them, "Do you know what I have done for you? | 12When he had finished washing their feet, he put on his clothes and returned to his place. "Do you understand what I have done for you?" he asked them. |
You call Me Teacher and Lord. This is well said, for I am. | 13"You call me 'Teacher' and 'Lord,' and rightly so, for that is what I am. |
So if I, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also ought to wash one another's feet. | 14Now that I, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also should wash one another's feet. |
For I have given you an example that you also should do just as I have done for you. | 15I have set you an example that you should do as I have done for you. |
"I assure you: A slave is not greater than his master, and a messenger is not greater than the one who sent him. | 16Very truly I tell you, no servant is greater than his master, nor is a messenger greater than the one who sent him. |
If you know these things, you are blessed if you do them. | 17Now that you know these things, you will be blessed if you do them. |
I'm not speaking about all of you; I know those I have chosen. But the Scripture must be fulfilled: The one who eats My bread has raised his heel against Me. | 18"I am not referring to all of you; I know those I have chosen. But this is to fulfill this passage of Scripture: 'He who shared my bread has turned against me.' |
"I am telling you now before it happens, so that when it does happen you will believe that I am He. | 19"I am telling you now before it happens, so that when it does happen you will believe that I am who I am. |
I assure you: Whoever receives anyone I send receives Me, and the one who receives Me receives Him who sent Me." | 20Very truly I tell you, whoever accepts anyone I send accepts me; and whoever accepts me accepts the one who sent me." |
When Jesus had said this, He was troubled in His spirit and testified, "I assure you: One of you will betray Me!" | 21After he had said this, Jesus was troubled in spirit and testified, "Very truly I tell you, one of you is going to betray me." |
The disciples started looking at one another--uncertain which one He was speaking about. | 22His disciples stared at one another, at a loss to know which of them he meant. |
One of His disciples, the one Jesus loved, was reclining close beside Jesus. | 23One of them, the disciple whom Jesus loved, was reclining next to him. |
Simon Peter motioned to him to find out who it was He was talking about. | 24Simon Peter motioned to this disciple and said, "Ask him which one he means." |
So he leaned back against Jesus and asked Him, "Lord, who is it?" | 25Leaning back against Jesus, he asked him, "Lord, who is it?" |
Jesus replied, "He's the one I give the piece of bread to after I have dipped it." When He had dipped the bread, He gave it to Judas, Simon Iscariot's son. | 26Jesus answered, "It is the one to whom I will give this piece of bread when I have dipped it in the dish." Then, dipping the piece of bread, he gave it to Judas, the son of Simon Iscariot. |
After Judas ate the piece of bread, Satan entered him. Therefore Jesus told him, "What you're doing, do quickly." | 27As soon as Judas took the bread, Satan entered into him. So Jesus told him, "What you are about to do, do quickly." |
None of those reclining at the table knew why He told him this. | 28But no one at the meal understood why Jesus said this to him. |
Since Judas kept the money-bag, some thought that Jesus was telling him, "Buy what we need for the festival," or that he should give something to the poor. | 29Since Judas had charge of the money, some thought Jesus was telling him to buy what was needed for the festival, or to give something to the poor. |
After receiving the piece of bread, he went out immediately. And it was night. | 30As soon as Judas had taken the bread, he went out. And it was night. |
When he had gone out, Jesus said, "Now the Son of Man is glorified, and God is glorified in Him. | 31When he was gone, Jesus said, "Now the Son of Man is glorified and God is glorified in him. |
If God is glorified in Him, God will also glorify Him in Himself and will glorify Him at once. | 32If God is glorified in him, God will glorify the Son in himself, and will glorify him at once. |
"Children, I am with you a little while longer. You will look for Me, and just as I told the Jews, Where I am going you cannot come,' so now I tell you. | 33"My children, I will be with you only a little longer. You will look for me, and just as I told the Jews, so I tell you now: Where I am going, you cannot come. |
"I give you a new command: Love one another. Just as I have loved you, you must also love one another. | 34"A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another. |
By this all people will know that you are My disciples, if you have love for one another."" | 35By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another." |
Lord," Simon Peter said to Him, "where are You going?" Jesus answered, "Where I am going you cannot follow Me now, but you will follow later."" | 36Simon Peter asked him, "Lord, where are you going?" Jesus replied, "Where I am going, you cannot follow now, but you will follow later." |
Lord," Peter asked, "why can't I follow You now? I will lay down my life for You!" | 37Peter asked, "Lord, why can't I follow you now? I will lay down my life for you." |
Jesus replied, "Will you lay down your life for Me? I assure you: A rooster will not crow until you have denied Me three times. | 38Then Jesus answered, "Will you really lay down your life for me? Very truly I tell you, before the rooster crows, you will disown me three times! |
