1This is a record of Esau's genealogy, that is, of Edom. 1These are the generations of Esau (that is, Edom).
2Esau had married Canaanite women, including Elon the Hittite's daughter Adah, Oholibamah, the daughter of Anah (who was Zibeon the Hivite's daughter), and 2Esau took his wives from the Canaanites: Adah the daughter of Elon the Hittite, Oholibamah the daughter of Anah the daughter of Zibeon the Hivite,
3Ishamael's daughter Basemath (who was Nebaioth's sister). 3and Basemath, Ishmael’s daughter, the sister of Nebaioth.
4Adah bore Eliphaz to Esau, Basemath bore Reuel, and 4And Adah bore to Esau, Eliphaz; Basemath bore Reuel;
5Oholibamah bore Jeush, Jalam, and Korah. These were Esau's sons, who were born to him in the territory of Canaan.5and Oholibamah bore Jeush, Jalam, and Korah. These are the sons of Esau who were born to him in the land of Canaan.
6Later, Esau took his wives, his children, everyone in his household, his livestock, all his animals, and all his possessions that he had acquired in the territory of Canaan and moved far away from his brother Jacob, 6Then Esau took his wives, his sons, his daughters, and all the members of his household, his livestock, all his beasts, and all his property that he had acquired in the land of Canaan. He went into a land away from his brother Jacob.
7because their holdings were too vast to allow them to stay together, since the land where they had settled was not able to support all of their livestock. 7For their possessions were too great for them to dwell together. The land of their sojournings could not support them because of their livestock.
8So Esau lived in Mount Seir. (Esau was also known as Edom.)8So Esau settled in the hill country of Seir. (Esau is Edom.)
9This is a record of the family history of Esau, the ancestor of the Edomites of Mount Seir. 9These are the generations of Esau the father of the Edomites in the hill country of Seir.
10The names of Esau's sons were Eliphaz (the son of Esau's wife Adah) and Reuel (the son of Esau's wife Basemath). 10These are the names of Esau’s sons: Eliphaz the son of Adah the wife of Esau, Reuel the son of Basemath the wife of Esau.
11Eliphaz's sons were Teman, Omar, Zepho, Gatam, and Kenaz. 11The sons of Eliphaz were Teman, Omar, Zepho, Gatam, and Kenaz.
12Timnah was a concubine of Esau's son Eliphaz. She bore Amalek to Eliphaz.12(Timna was a concubine of Eliphaz, Esau’s son; she bore Amalek to Eliphaz.) These are the sons of Adah, Esau’s wife.
13Reuel's sons were Nahath, Zerah, Shammah, and Mizzah. These were the sons of Esau's wife Basemath.13These are the sons of Reuel: Nahath, Zerah, Shammah, and Mizzah. These are the sons of Basemath, Esau’s wife.
14These were the sons of Esau's wife Oholibamah, the daughter of Anah, who was the daughter of Zibeon. She bore Jeush, Jalam, and Korah for Esau.14These are the sons of Oholibamah the daughter of Anah the daughter of Zibeon, Esau’s wife: she bore to Esau Jeush, Jalam, and Korah.
15These were the tribal leaders of Esau's descendants; that is, the children of Eliphaz, who was Esau's firstborn: tribal leaders Teman, Omar, Zepho, Kenaz, 15These are the chiefs of the sons of Esau. The sons of Eliphaz the firstborn of Esau: the chiefs Teman, Omar, Zepho, Kenaz,
16Korah, Gatam, and Amalek. These were the tribal leaders who descended from Eliphaz in the territory of Edom. These were Adah's sons.16Korah, Gatam, and Amalek; these are the chiefs of Eliphaz in the land of Edom; these are the sons of Adah.
17These were the descendants of Esau's son Reuel: tribal leaders Nahath, Zerah, Shammah, and Mizzah. These were the tribal leaders who descended from Reuel in the territory of Edom. These were the sons of Esau's wife Basemath.17These are the sons of Reuel, Esau’s son: the chiefs Nahath, Zerah, Shammah, and Mizzah; these are the chiefs of Reuel in the land of Edom; these are the sons of Basemath, Esau’s wife.
18These were the descendants of Esau's wife Oholibamah: tribal leaders Jeush, Jalam, and Korah. These tribal leaders descended from Esau's wife Oholibamah, Anah's daughter. 18These are the sons of Oholibamah, Esau’s wife: the chiefs Jeush, Jalam, and Korah; these are the chiefs born of Oholibamah the daughter of Anah, Esau’s wife.
19These were the descendants of Esau (also known as Edom) and their tribal leaders.19These are the sons of Esau (that is, Edom), and these are their chiefs.
20These were the descendants of Seir the Horite, who lived in the territory: Lotan, Shobal, Zibeon, Anah, 20These are the sons of Seir the Horite, the inhabitants of the land: Lotan, Shobal, Zibeon, Anah,
21Dishon, Ezer, and Dishan. These were the tribal leaders who descended from the Horites, the descendants of Seir in the territory of Edom.21Dishon, Ezer, and Dishan; these are the chiefs of the Horites, the sons of Seir in the land of Edom.
22Lotan's children were Hori and Hemam. Lotan's sister was Timna.22The sons of Lotan were Hori and Hemam; and Lotan’s sister was Timna.
23Shobal's children were Alvan, Manahath, Ebal, Shepho, and Onam.23These are the sons of Shobal: Alvan, Manahath, Ebal, Shepho, and Onam.
24Zibeon's children were Aiah and Anah. Anah discovered the hot springs in the wilderness while grazing his father Zibeon's donkeys.24These are the sons of Zibeon: Aiah and Anah; he is the Anah who found the hot springs in the wilderness, as he pastured the donkeys of Zibeon his father.
25Anah's children were Dishon and Anah's daughter Oholibamah.25These are the children of Anah: Dishon and Oholibamah the daughter of Anah.
26Dishon's children were Hemdan, Eshban, Ithran, and Keran.26These are the sons of Dishon: Hemdan, Eshban, Ithran, and Cheran.
27Ezer's children were Bilhan, Zaavan, and Akan.27These are the sons of Ezer: Bilhan, Zaavan, and Akan.
28Dishan's children were Uz and Aran.28These are the sons of Dishan: Uz and Aran.
29These were the tribal leaders who descended from the Horites: tribal leaders Lotan, Shobal, Zibeon, Anah, 29These are the chiefs of the Horites: the chiefs Lotan, Shobal, Zibeon, Anah,
30Dishon, Ezer, and Dishan. These were the tribal leaders who descended from the Horites, according to their tribal leaders in the territory of Seir.30Dishon, Ezer, and Dishan; these are the chiefs of the Horites, chief by chief in the land of Seir.
31This is a list of the kings who ruled the territory of Edom before any king reigned over the Israelis. 31These are the kings who reigned in the land of Edom, before any king reigned over the Israelites.
32Beor's son Bela ruled over Edom. His city's name was Dinhabah.32Bela the son of Beor reigned in Edom, the name of his city being Dinhabah.
33After Bela died, Zerah's son Jobab from Bozrah ruled in his place.33Bela died, and Jobab the son of Zerah of Bozrah reigned in his place.
34After Jobab died, Husham from the territory of the Temanites ruled in his place.34Jobab died, and Husham of the land of the Temanites reigned in his place.
35After Husham died, Bedad's son Hadad, who killed Midian in the field of Moab, ruled in his place. His city's name was Avith.35Husham died, and Hadad the son of Bedad, who defeated Midian in the country of Moab, reigned in his place, the name of his city being Avith.
36After Hadad died, Samlah from Masrekah ruled in his place.36Hadad died, and Samlah of Masrekah reigned in his place.
37After Samlah died, Shaul from Rehoboth by the river ruled in his place.37Samlah died, and Shaul of Rehoboth on the Euphrates reigned in his place.
38After Shaul died, Achbor's son Baal-hanan ruled in his place.38Shaul died, and Baal-hanan the son of Achbor reigned in his place.
39After Achbor's son Baal-hanan died, Hadar ruled in his place. His city's name was Pau. And his wife's name was Mehetabel, who was the daughter of Matred, and granddaughter of Me-zahab.39Baal-hanan the son of Achbor died, and Hadar reigned in his place, the name of his city being Pau; his wife’s name was Mehetabel, the daughter of Matred, daughter of Mezahab.
40These were the names of the chiefs who descended from Esau according to their clans, territories, and names: tribal leaders Timna, Alvah, Jetheth, 40These are the names of the chiefs of Esau, according to their clans and their dwelling places, by their names: the chiefs Timna, Alvah, Jetheth,
41Oholibamah, Elah, Pinon, 41Oholibamah, Elah, Pinon,
42Kenaz, Teman, Mibzar, 42Kenaz, Teman, Mibzar,
43Magdiel, and Iram. These were the chiefs who descended from Edom, according to their territories in their own land. This was the dynasty of Esau, who was the ancestor of the Edomites.43Magdiel, and Iram; these are the chiefs of Edom (that is, Esau, the father of Edom), according to their dwelling places in the land of their possession.
