Job 40
ISV Parallel ESV [BSB CSB ESV HCS KJV ISV NAS NET NIV NLT HEB]
International Standard VersionEnglish Standard Version
The LORD continued his response to Job by saying:1And the LORD said to Job:
"Should the one who is fighting the Almighty find fault with him? Let God's accuser answer."2“Shall a faultfinder contend with the Almighty? He who argues with God, let him answer it.”
Then Job replied to the LORD. He said:3Then Job answered the LORD and said:
"I must look insignificant to you! How can I answer you? I'm speechless. 4“Behold, I am of small account; what shall I answer you? I lay my hand on my mouth.
I spoke once, but I can't answer; I tried a second time, but I won't do so anymore."5I have spoken once, and I will not answer; twice, but I will proceed no further.”
The LORD answered Job from the wind storm and told him:6Then the LORD answered Job out of the whirlwind and said:
"Stand up like a man! I'll ask you some questions, and you give me some answers!7“Dress for action like a man; I will question you, and you make it known to me.
Indeed would you annul my justice and condemn me, just so you can claim that you're righteous?8Will you even put me in the wrong? Will you condemn me that you may be in the right?
Do you have strength like God? Can you create thunder with a sound like he can?"9Have you an arm like God, and can you thunder with a voice like his?
"When you have adorned yourself with exalted majesty, clothed yourself with splendor and dignity, 10“Adorn yourself with majesty and dignity; clothe yourself with glory and splendor.
dispensed the fury of your anger, made sure that you have humbled every proud person,11Pour out the overflowings of your anger, and look on everyone who is proud and abase him.
stared down and subdued every proud person, trampled the wicked right where they are,12Look on everyone who is proud and bring him low and tread down the wicked where they stand.
buried them in the dust together, and sent them bound to that secret place, 13Hide them all in the dust together; bind their faces in the world below.
then I will applaud you myself! I'll admit that you can deliver yourself by your own efforts!"14Then will I also acknowledge to you that your own right hand can save you.
"Please observe Behemoth, which I made along with you. He eats grass like an ox.15“Behold, Behemoth, which I made as I made you; he eats grass like an ox.
Now take a look at the strength that he has in his loins, and in the muscles of his abdomen.16Behold, his strength in his loins, and his power in the muscles of his belly.
His tail protrudes stiffly, like cedar; the sinews of his thigh interlink for strength.17He makes his tail stiff like a cedar; the sinews of his thighs are knit together.
His bones are conduits of bronze; his strong bones are like bars of iron.18His bones are tubes of bronze, his limbs like bars of iron.
He is the grandest of God's undertakings, yet his creator is approaching him with his sword. 19“He is the first of the works of God; let him who made him bring near his sword!
Mountains produce food for him, where all the wild animals frolic.20For the mountains yield food for him where all the wild beasts play.
He lies under the lotus trees, hiding under reeds and marshes. 21Under the lotus plants he lies, in the shelter of the reeds and in the marsh.
The lotus trees cover him with their shade, and willows that line the wadis surround him.22For his shade the lotus trees cover him; the willows of the brook surround him.
What you see as a raging river doesn't alarm him; he is confident when the Jordan overflows.23Behold, if the river is turbulent he is not frightened; he is confident though Jordan rushes against his mouth.
Are your eyes looking to capture him, or to pierce his snout with a bridle?"24Can one take him by his eyes, or pierce his nose with a snare?
