The LORD continued his response to Job by saying: | 1The LORD said to Job: |
"Should the one who is fighting the Almighty find fault with him? Let God's accuser answer." | 2"Will the one who contends with the Almighty correct him? Let him who accuses God answer him!" |
Then Job replied to the LORD. He said: | 3Then Job answered the LORD: |
"I must look insignificant to you! How can I answer you? I'm speechless. | 4"I am unworthy--how can I reply to you? I put my hand over my mouth. |
I spoke once, but I can't answer; I tried a second time, but I won't do so anymore." | 5I spoke once, but I have no answer-- twice, but I will say no more." |
The LORD answered Job from the wind storm and told him: | 6Then the LORD spoke to Job out of the storm: |
"Stand up like a man! I'll ask you some questions, and you give me some answers! | 7"Brace yourself like a man; I will question you, and you shall answer me. |
Indeed would you annul my justice and condemn me, just so you can claim that you're righteous? | 8"Would you discredit my justice? Would you condemn me to justify yourself? |
Do you have strength like God? Can you create thunder with a sound like he can?" | 9Do you have an arm like God's, and can your voice thunder like his? |
"When you have adorned yourself with exalted majesty, clothed yourself with splendor and dignity, | 10Then adorn yourself with glory and splendor, and clothe yourself in honor and majesty. |
dispensed the fury of your anger, made sure that you have humbled every proud person, | 11Unleash the fury of your wrath, look at all who are proud and bring them low, |
stared down and subdued every proud person, trampled the wicked right where they are, | 12look at all who are proud and humble them, crush the wicked where they stand. |
buried them in the dust together, and sent them bound to that secret place, | 13Bury them all in the dust together; shroud their faces in the grave. |
then I will applaud you myself! I'll admit that you can deliver yourself by your own efforts!" | 14Then I myself will admit to you that your own right hand can save you. |
"Please observe Behemoth, which I made along with you. He eats grass like an ox. | 15"Look at Behemoth, which I made along with you and which feeds on grass like an ox. |
Now take a look at the strength that he has in his loins, and in the muscles of his abdomen. | 16What strength it has in its loins, what power in the muscles of its belly! |
His tail protrudes stiffly, like cedar; the sinews of his thigh interlink for strength. | 17Its tail sways like a cedar; the sinews of its thighs are close-knit. |
His bones are conduits of bronze; his strong bones are like bars of iron. | 18Its bones are tubes of bronze, its limbs like rods of iron. |
He is the grandest of God's undertakings, yet his creator is approaching him with his sword. | 19It ranks first among the works of God, yet its Maker can approach it with his sword. |
Mountains produce food for him, where all the wild animals frolic. | 20The hills bring it their produce, and all the wild animals play nearby. |
He lies under the lotus trees, hiding under reeds and marshes. | 21Under the lotus plants it lies, hidden among the reeds in the marsh. |
The lotus trees cover him with their shade, and willows that line the wadis surround him. | 22The lotuses conceal it in their shadow; the poplars by the stream surround it. |
What you see as a raging river doesn't alarm him; he is confident when the Jordan overflows. | 23A raging river does not alarm it; it is secure, though the Jordan should surge against its mouth. |
Are your eyes looking to capture him, or to pierce his snout with a bridle?" | 24Can anyone capture it by the eyes, or trap it and pierce its nose? |
