International Standard VersionEnglish Standard Version
When the Pharisees and Sadducees arrived, in order to test Jesus they asked him to show them a sign from heaven. 1And the Pharisees and Sadducees came, and to test him they asked him to show them a sign from heaven.
He replied to them, "You say, 'Red sky at night, what a delight!2He answered them, “When it is evening, you say, ‘It will be fair weather, for the sky is red.’
Red sky in the morning, cloudy and storming.' You know how to interpret the appearance of the sky, yet you can't interpret the signs of the times?3And in the morning, ‘It will be stormy today, for the sky is red and threatening.’ You know how to interpret the appearance of the sky, but you cannot interpret the signs of the times.
An evil and adulterous generation craves a sign, but no sign will be given to it except the sign of Jonah." Then he left them and went away.4An evil and adulterous generation seeks for a sign, but no sign will be given to it except the sign of Jonah.” So he left them and departed.
When his disciples reached the other side, they had forgotten to take any bread along. 5When the disciples reached the other side, they had forgotten to bring any bread.
Jesus told them, "Watch out! Beware of the yeast of the Pharisees and Sadducees!"6Jesus said to them, “Watch and beware of the leaven of the Pharisees and Sadducees.”
As they began to discuss this among themselves, they kept saying, "We didn't bring along any bread."7And they began discussing it among themselves, saying, “We brought no bread.”
Knowing this, Jesus asked them, "You who have little faith, why are you discussing among yourselves the fact that you don't have any bread? 8But Jesus, aware of this, said, “O you of little faith, why are you discussing among yourselves the fact that you have no bread?
Don't you understand yet? Don't you remember the five loaves for the 5,000 and how many baskets you collected, 9Do you not yet perceive? Do you not remember the five loaves for the five thousand, and how many baskets you gathered?
or the seven loaves for the 4,000 and how many baskets you collected? 10Or the seven loaves for the four thousand, and how many baskets you gathered?
How can you fail to understand that I wasn't talking to you about bread? Beware of the yeast of the Pharisees and Sadducees!"11How is it that you fail to understand that I did not speak about bread? Beware of the leaven of the Pharisees and Sadducees.”
Then they understood that he did not say to beware of the yeast used in bread, but of the teaching of the Pharisees and Sadducees.12Then they understood that he did not tell them to beware of the leaven of bread, but of the teaching of the Pharisees and Sadducees.
When Jesus had come to the region of Caesarea Philippi, he asked his disciples, "Who do people say the Son of Man is?"13Now when Jesus came into the district of Caesarea Philippi, he asked his disciples, “Who do people say that the Son of Man is?”
They said, "Some say John the Baptist, others Elijah, and still others Jeremiah or one of the prophets."14And they said, “Some say John the Baptist, others say Elijah, and others Jeremiah or one of the prophets.”
He asked them, "But who do you say I am?"15He said to them, “But who do you say that I am?”
Simon Peter answered, "You are the Messiah, the Son of the living God!"16Simon Peter replied, “You are the Christ, the Son of the living God.”
Then Jesus told him, "How blessed you are, Simon son of Jonah, since flesh and blood has not revealed this to you, though my Father in heaven has. 17And Jesus answered him, “Blessed are you, Simon Bar-Jonah! For flesh and blood has not revealed this to you, but my Father who is in heaven.
I tell you that you are Peter, and it is on this rock that I will build my congregation, and the powers of hell will not conquer it. 18And I tell you, you are Peter, and on this rock I will build my church, and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it.
I will give you the keys to the kingdom from heaven. Whatever you prohibit on earth will have been prohibited in heaven, and whatever you permit on earth will have been permitted in heaven."19I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven, and whatever you bind on earth shall be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven.”
Then he strictly ordered the disciples not to tell anyone that he was the Messiah. 20Then he strictly charged the disciples to tell no one that he was the Christ.
From that time on, Jesus began to show his disciples that he would have to go to Jerusalem and suffer a great deal because of the elders, the high priests, and the scribes. Then he would be killed, but on the third day he would be raised. 21From that time Jesus began to show his disciples that he must go to Jerusalem and suffer many things from the elders and chief priests and scribes, and be killed, and on the third day be raised.
Peter took him aside and began to rebuke him, saying, "God be merciful to you, Lord! This must never happen to you!"22And Peter took him aside and began to rebuke him, saying, “Far be it from you, Lord! This shall never happen to you.”
But Jesus turned and told Peter, "Get behind me, Satan! You are an offense to me, because you are not thinking God's thoughts but human thoughts!"23But he turned and said to Peter, “Get behind me, Satan! You are a hindrance to me. For you are not setting your mind on the things of God, but on the things of man.”
Then Jesus told his disciples, "If anyone wants to follow me, he must deny himself, pick up his cross, and follow me continuously. 24Then Jesus told his disciples, “If anyone would come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross and follow me.
Whoever wants to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for my sake will find it, 25For whoever would save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for my sake will find it.
because what profit will a person have if he gains the whole world and forfeits his life? Or what can a person give in exchange for his life? 26For what will it profit a man if he gains the whole world and forfeits his soul? Or what shall a man give in return for his soul?
The Son of Man is going to come with his angels in his Father's glory, and then he will repay everyone according to what he has done. 27For the Son of Man is going to come with his angels in the glory of his Father, and then he will repay each person according to what he has done.
I tell all of you with certainty, some people standing here will not experience death before they see the Son of Man coming in his kingdom."28Truly, I say to you, there are some standing here who will not taste death until they see the Son of Man coming in his kingdom.”
