When the Pharisees and Sadducees arrived, in order to test Jesus they asked him to show them a sign from heaven.
He replied to them, "You say, 'Red sky at night, what a delight!2 δὲ ἀποκριθεὶς εἶπεν αὐτοῖς Ὀψίας γενομένης λέγετε Εὐδία πυρράζει γὰρ οὐρανός
Red sky in the morning, cloudy and storming.' You know how to interpret the appearance of the sky, yet you can't interpret the signs of the times?3καὶ πρωΐ Σήμερον χειμών πυρράζει γὰρ στυγνάζων οὐρανός τὸ μὲν πρόσωπον τοῦ οὐρανοῦ γινώσκετε διακρίνειν τὰ δὲ σημεῖα τῶν καιρῶν οὐ δύνασθε
An evil and adulterous generation craves a sign, but no sign will be given to it except the sign of Jonah." Then he left them and went away.4γενεὰ πονηρὰ καὶ μοιχαλὶς σημεῖον ἐπιζητεῖ καὶ σημεῖον οὐ δοθήσεται αὐτῇ εἰ μὴ τὸ σημεῖον Ἰωνᾶ καὶ καταλιπὼν αὐτοὺς ἀπῆλθεν
When his disciples reached the other side, they had forgotten to take any bread along.
Jesus told them, "Watch out! Beware of the yeast of the Pharisees and Sadducees!"6 δὲ Ἰησοῦς εἶπεν αὐτοῖς Ὁρᾶτε καὶ προσέχετε ἀπὸ τῆς ζύμης τῶν Φαρισαίων καὶ Σαδδουκαίων
As they began to discuss this among themselves, they kept saying, "We didn't bring along any bread."7Οἱ δὲ διελογίζοντο ἐν ἑαυτοῖς λέγοντες Ὅτι Ἄρτους οὐκ ἐλάβομεν
Knowing this, Jesus asked them, "You who have little faith, why are you discussing among yourselves the fact that you don't have any bread? 8Γνοὺς δὲ Ἰησοῦς εἶπεν Τί διαλογίζεσθε ἐν ἑαυτοῖς ὀλιγόπιστοι ὅτι ἄρτους οὐκ ἔχετε
Don't you understand yet? Don't you remember the five loaves for the 5,000 and how many baskets you collected,
or the seven loaves for the 4,000 and how many baskets you collected?
How can you fail to understand that I wasn't talking to you about bread? Beware of the yeast of the Pharisees and Sadducees!"11πῶς οὐ νοεῖτε ὅτι οὐ περὶ ἄρτων εἶπον ὑμῖν προσέχετε δὲ ἀπὸ τῆς ζύμης τῶν Φαρισαίων καὶ Σαδδουκαίων
Then they understood that he did not say to beware of the yeast used in bread, but of the teaching of the Pharisees and Sadducees.12Τότε συνῆκαν ὅτι οὐκ εἶπεν προσέχειν ἀπὸ τῆς ζύμης τῶν ἄρτων ἀλλὰ ἀπὸ τῆς διδαχῆς τῶν Φαρισαίων καὶ Σαδδουκαίων
When Jesus had come to the region of Caesarea Philippi, he asked his disciples, "Who do people say the Son of Man is?"13Ἐλθὼν δὲ Ἰησοῦς εἰς τὰ μέρη Καισαρείας τῆς Φιλίππου ἠρώτα τοὺς μαθητὰς αὐτοῦ λέγων Τίνα λέγουσιν οἱ ἄνθρωποι εἶναι τὸν Υἱὸν τοῦ ἀνθρώπου
They said, "Some say John the Baptist, others Elijah, and still others Jeremiah or one of the prophets."14Οἱ δὲ εἶπαν Οἱ μὲν Ἰωάννην τὸν Βαπτιστήν ἄλλοι δὲ Ἠλίαν ἕτεροι δὲ Ἰερεμίαν ἕνα τῶν προφητῶν
He asked them, "But who do you say I am?"15Λέγει αὐτοῖς Ὑμεῖς δὲ τίνα με λέγετε εἶναι
Simon Peter answered, "You are the Messiah, the Son of the living God!"16Ἀποκριθεὶς δὲ Σίμων Πέτρος εἶπεν Σὺ εἶ Χριστὸς Υἱὸς τοῦ Θεοῦ τοῦ ζῶντος
Then Jesus told him, "How blessed you are, Simon son of Jonah, since flesh and blood has not revealed this to you, though my Father in heaven has. 17Ἀποκριθεὶς δὲ Ἰησοῦς εἶπεν αὐτῷ Μακάριος εἶ Σίμων Βαριωνᾶ ὅτι σὰρξ καὶ αἷμα οὐκ ἀπεκάλυψέν σοι ἀλλ’ Πατήρ μου ἐν τοῖς οὐρανοῖς
I tell you that you are Peter, and it is on this rock that I will build my congregation, and the powers of hell will not conquer it. 18κἀγὼ δέ σοι λέγω ὅτι σὺ εἶ Πέτρος καὶ ἐπὶ ταύτῃ τῇ πέτρᾳ οἰκοδομήσω μου τὴν ἐκκλησίαν καὶ πύλαι ᾅδου οὐ κατισχύσουσιν αὐτῆς
I will give you the keys to the kingdom from heaven. Whatever you prohibit on earth will have been prohibited in heaven, and whatever you permit on earth will have been permitted in heaven."19δώσω σοι τὰς κλεῖδας τῆς βασιλείας τῶν οὐρανῶν καὶ ἐὰν δήσῃς ἐπὶ τῆς γῆς ἔσται δεδεμένον ἐν τοῖς οὐρανοῖς καὶ ἐὰν λύσῃς ἐπὶ τῆς γῆς ἔσται λελυμένον ἐν τοῖς οὐρανοῖς
Then he strictly ordered the disciples not to tell anyone that he was the Messiah.
From that time on, Jesus began to show his disciples that he would have to go to Jerusalem and suffer a great deal because of the elders, the high priests, and the scribes. Then he would be killed, but on the third day he would be raised.
Peter took him aside and began to rebuke him, saying, "God be merciful to you, Lord! This must never happen to you!"22Καὶ προσλαβόμενος αὐτὸν Πέτρος ἤρξατο ἐπιτιμᾶν αὐτῷ λέγων Ἵλεώς σοι Κύριε οὐ μὴ ἔσται σοι τοῦτο
But Jesus turned and told Peter, "Get behind me, Satan! You are an offense to me, because you are not thinking God's thoughts but human thoughts!"23 δὲ στραφεὶς εἶπεν τῷ Πέτρῳ Ὕπαγε ὀπίσω μου Σατανᾶ σκάνδαλον εἶ ἐμοῦ ὅτι οὐ φρονεῖς τὰ τοῦ Θεοῦ ἀλλὰ τὰ τῶν ἀνθρώπων
Then Jesus told his disciples, "If anyone wants to follow me, he must deny himself, pick up his cross, and follow me continuously. 24Τότε Ἰησοῦς εἶπεν τοῖς μαθηταῖς αὐτοῦ Εἴ τις θέλει ὀπίσω μου ἐλθεῖν ἀπαρνησάσθω ἑαυτὸν καὶ ἀράτω τὸν σταυρὸν αὐτοῦ καὶ ἀκολουθείτω μοι
Whoever wants to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for my sake will find it, 25ὃς γὰρ ἐὰν θέλῃ τὴν ψυχὴν αὐτοῦ σῶσαι ἀπολέσει αὐτήν ὃς δ’ ἂν ἀπολέσῃ τὴν ψυχὴν αὐτοῦ ἕνεκεν ἐμοῦ εὑρήσει αὐτήν
because what profit will a person have if he gains the whole world and forfeits his life? Or what can a person give in exchange for his life?
The Son of Man is going to come with his angels in his Father's glory, and then he will repay everyone according to what he has done.
I tell all of you with certainty, some people standing here will not experience death before they see the Son of Man coming in his kingdom."28Ἀμὴν λέγω ὑμῖν ὅτι εἰσίν τινες τῶν ὧδε ἑστώτων οἵτινες οὐ μὴ γεύσωνται θανάτου ἕως ἂν ἴδωσιν τὸν Υἱὸν τοῦ ἀνθρώπου ἐρχόμενον ἐν τῇ βασιλείᾳ αὐτοῦ
