International Standard VersionNew American Standard Bible 1995
On the first day of the week, early in the morning and while it was still dark, Mary Magdalene went to the tomb and noticed that the stone had been removed from the tomb. 1Now on the first day of the week Mary Magdalene came early to the tomb, while it was still dark, and saw the stone already taken away from the tomb.
So she ran off and went to Simon Peter and the other disciple, whom Jesus kept loving. She told them, "They have taken the Lord out of the tomb, and we don't know where they have put him!" 2So she ran and came to Simon Peter and to the other disciple whom Jesus loved, and said to them, "They have taken away the Lord out of the tomb, and we do not know where they have laid Him."
So Peter and the other disciple took off for the tomb. 3So Peter and the other disciple went forth, and they were going to the tomb.
The two of them were running together, but the other disciple ran faster than Peter and came to the tomb first. 4The two were running together; and the other disciple ran ahead faster than Peter and came to the tomb first;
Bending over to look inside, he noticed the linen cloths lying there, but didn't go in. 5and stooping and looking in, he saw the linen wrappings lying there; but he did not go in.
At this point Simon Peter arrived, following him, and went straight into the tomb. He observed that the linen cloths were lying there, 6And so Simon Peter also came, following him, and entered the tomb; and he saw the linen wrappings lying there,
and that the handkerchief that had been on Jesus' head was not lying with the linen cloths but was rolled up in a separate place. 7and the face-cloth which had been on His head, not lying with the linen wrappings, but rolled up in a place by itself.
Then the other disciple, who arrived at the tomb first, went inside, looked, and believed. 8So the other disciple who had first come to the tomb then also entered, and he saw and believed.
For they did not yet understand the Scripture that said that Jesus had to rise from the dead. 9For as yet they did not understand the Scripture, that He must rise again from the dead.
So the disciples went back to their homes.10So the disciples went away again to their own homes.
Meanwhile, Mary stood crying outside the tomb. As she cried, she bent over and looked into the tomb. 11But Mary was standing outside the tomb weeping; and so, as she wept, she stooped and looked into the tomb;
She saw two angels in white clothes who were sitting down, one at the head and the other at the foot of the place where Jesus' body had been lying. 12and she saw two angels in white sitting, one at the head and one at the feet, where the body of Jesus had been lying.
They asked her, "Lady, why are you crying?" She told them, "Because they have taken away my Lord, and I don't know where they have put him."13And they said to her, "Woman, why are you weeping?" She said to them, "Because they have taken away my Lord, and I do not know where they have laid Him."
After she had said this, she turned around and noticed Jesus standing there, without realizing that it was Jesus.14When she had said this, she turned around and saw Jesus standing there, and did not know that it was Jesus.
Jesus asked her, "Dear lady, why are you crying? Who are you looking for?" Thinking he was the gardener, she told him, "Sir, if you have carried him away, tell me where you have put him, and I will take him away."15Jesus said to her, "Woman, why are you weeping? Whom are you seeking?" Supposing Him to be the gardener, she said to Him, "Sir, if you have carried Him away, tell me where you have laid Him, and I will take Him away."
Jesus told her, "Mary!" She turned around and told him in Hebrew, "Rabbouni!" (which means "Teacher").16Jesus said to her, "Mary!" She turned and said to Him in Hebrew, "Rabboni!" (which means, Teacher).
Jesus told her, "Don't hold on to me, because I haven't yet ascended to the Father. But go to my brothers and tell them, 'I'm ascending to my Father and your Father, to my God and your God.'"17Jesus said to her, "Stop clinging to Me, for I have not yet ascended to the Father; but go to My brethren and say to them, 'I ascend to My Father and your Father, and My God and your God.'"
So Mary Magdalene went and announced to the disciples, "I've seen the Lord!" She also told them what he had told her.18Mary Magdalene came, announcing to the disciples, "I have seen the Lord," and that He had said these things to her.
It was the evening of the first day of the week, and the doors of the house where the disciples had met were locked because they were afraid of the Jewish leaders. Jesus came and stood among them. He told them, "Peace be with you." 19So when it was evening on that day, the first day of the week, and when the doors were shut where the disciples were, for fear of the Jews, Jesus came and stood in their midst and said to them, "Peace be with you."
After saying this, he showed them his hands and his side, and when they saw the Lord, the disciples were overjoyed. 20And when He had said this, He showed them both His hands and His side. The disciples then rejoiced when they saw the Lord.
Jesus told them again, "Peace be with you. Just as the Father has sent me, so I am sending you." 21So Jesus said to them again, "Peace be with you; as the Father has sent Me, I also send you."
When he had said this, he breathed on them and told them, "Receive the Holy Spirit. 22And when He had said this, He breathed on them and said to them, "Receive the Holy Spirit.
If you forgive people's sins, they are forgiven. If you retain people's sins, they are retained."23"If you forgive the sins of any, their sins have been forgiven them; if you retain the sins of any, they have been retained."
Thomas, one of the Twelve (called the Twin), wasn't with them when Jesus came. 24But Thomas, one of the twelve, called Didymus, was not with them when Jesus came.
So the other disciples kept telling him, "We've seen the Lord!" But he told them, "Unless I see the nail marks in his hands, put my finger into them, and put my hand into his side, I'll never believe!"25So the other disciples were saying to him, "We have seen the Lord!" But he said to them, "Unless I see in His hands the imprint of the nails, and put my finger into the place of the nails, and put my hand into His side, I will not believe."
A week later, his disciples were again inside, and Thomas was with them. Even though the doors were shut, Jesus came, stood among them, and said, "Peace be with you." 26After eight days His disciples were again inside, and Thomas with them. Jesus came, the doors having been shut, and stood in their midst and said, "Peace be with you."
Then he told Thomas, "Put your finger here, and look at my hands. Take your hand, and put it into my side. Stop doubting, but believe."27Then He said to Thomas, "Reach here with your finger, and see My hands; and reach here your hand and put it into My side; and do not be unbelieving, but believing."
Thomas answered him, "My Lord and my God!"28Thomas answered and said to Him, "My Lord and my God!"
Jesus told him, "Is it because you've seen me that you have believed? How blessed are those who have never seen me and yet have believed!"29Jesus said to him, "Because you have seen Me, have you believed? Blessed are they who did not see, and yet believed."
Jesus performed many other signs in the presence of his disciples that are not recorded in this book. 30Therefore many other signs Jesus also performed in the presence of the disciples, which are not written in this book;
But these have been recorded so that you may believe that Jesus is the Messiah, the Son of God, and so that through believing you may have life in his name.31but these have been written so that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God; and that believing you may have life in His name.
