On the first day of the week, early in the morning and while it was still dark, Mary Magdalene went to the tomb and noticed that the stone had been removed from the tomb. 1Now very early on the first day of the week, while it was still dark, Mary Magdalene came to the tomb and saw that the stone had been moved away from the entrance.
So she ran off and went to Simon Peter and the other disciple, whom Jesus kept loving. She told them, "They have taken the Lord out of the tomb, and we don't know where they have put him!" 2So she went running to Simon Peter and the other disciple whom Jesus loved and told them, "They have taken the Lord from the tomb, and we don't know where they have put him!"
So Peter and the other disciple took off for the tomb. 3Then Peter and the other disciple set out to go to the tomb.
The two of them were running together, but the other disciple ran faster than Peter and came to the tomb first. 4The two were running together, but the other disciple ran faster than Peter and reached the tomb first.
Bending over to look inside, he noticed the linen cloths lying there, but didn't go in. 5He bent down and saw the strips of linen cloth lying there, but he did not go in.
At this point Simon Peter arrived, following him, and went straight into the tomb. He observed that the linen cloths were lying there, 6Then Simon Peter, who had been following him, arrived and went right into the tomb. He saw the strips of linen cloth lying there,
and that the handkerchief that had been on Jesus' head was not lying with the linen cloths but was rolled up in a separate place. 7and the face cloth, which had been around Jesus' head, not lying with the strips of linen cloth but rolled up in a place by itself.
Then the other disciple, who arrived at the tomb first, went inside, looked, and believed. 8Then the other disciple, who had reached the tomb first, came in, and he saw and believed.
For they did not yet understand the Scripture that said that Jesus had to rise from the dead. 9(For they did not yet understand the scripture that Jesus must rise from the dead.)
So the disciples went back to their homes.10So the disciples went back to their homes.
Meanwhile, Mary stood crying outside the tomb. As she cried, she bent over and looked into the tomb. 11But Mary stood outside the tomb weeping. As she wept, she bent down and looked into the tomb.
She saw two angels in white clothes who were sitting down, one at the head and the other at the foot of the place where Jesus' body had been lying. 12And she saw two angels in white sitting where Jesus' body had been lying, one at the head and one at the feet.
They asked her, "Lady, why are you crying?" She told them, "Because they have taken away my Lord, and I don't know where they have put him."13They said to her, "Woman, why are you weeping?" Mary replied, "They have taken my Lord away, and I do not know where they have put him!"
After she had said this, she turned around and noticed Jesus standing there, without realizing that it was Jesus.14When she had said this, she turned around and saw Jesus standing there, but she did not know that it was Jesus.
Jesus asked her, "Dear lady, why are you crying? Who are you looking for?" Thinking he was the gardener, she told him, "Sir, if you have carried him away, tell me where you have put him, and I will take him away."15Jesus said to her, "Woman, why are you weeping? Who are you looking for?" Because she thought he was the gardener, she said to him, "Sir, if you have carried him away, tell me where you have put him, and I will take him."
Jesus told her, "Mary!" She turned around and told him in Hebrew, "Rabbouni!" (which means "Teacher").16Jesus said to her, "Mary." She turned and said to him in Aramaic, "Rabboni" (which means Teacher).
Jesus told her, "Don't hold on to me, because I haven't yet ascended to the Father. But go to my brothers and tell them, 'I'm ascending to my Father and your Father, to my God and your God.'"17Jesus replied, "Do not touch me, for I have not yet ascended to my Father. Go to my brothers and tell them, 'I am ascending to my Father and your Father, to my God and your God.'"
So Mary Magdalene went and announced to the disciples, "I've seen the Lord!" She also told them what he had told her.18Mary Magdalene came and informed the disciples, "I have seen the Lord!" And she told them what Jesus had said to her.
It was the evening of the first day of the week, and the doors of the house where the disciples had met were locked because they were afraid of the Jewish leaders. Jesus came and stood among them. He told them, "Peace be with you." 19On the evening of that day, the first day of the week, the disciples had gathered together and locked the doors of the place because they were afraid of the Jewish leaders. Jesus came and stood among them and said to them, "Peace be with you."
After saying this, he showed them his hands and his side, and when they saw the Lord, the disciples were overjoyed. 20When he had said this, he showed them his hands and his side. Then the disciples rejoiced when they saw the Lord.
Jesus told them again, "Peace be with you. Just as the Father has sent me, so I am sending you." 21So Jesus said to them again, "Peace be with you. Just as the Father has sent me, I also send you."
When he had said this, he breathed on them and told them, "Receive the Holy Spirit. 22And after he said this, he breathed on them and said, "Receive the Holy Spirit.
If you forgive people's sins, they are forgiven. If you retain people's sins, they are retained."23If you forgive anyone's sins, they are forgiven; if you retain anyone's sins, they are retained."
Thomas, one of the Twelve (called the Twin), wasn't with them when Jesus came. 24Now Thomas (called Didymus), one of the twelve, was not with them when Jesus came.
So the other disciples kept telling him, "We've seen the Lord!" But he told them, "Unless I see the nail marks in his hands, put my finger into them, and put my hand into his side, I'll never believe!"25The other disciples told him, "We have seen the Lord!" But he replied, "Unless I see the wounds from the nails in his hands, and put my finger into the wounds from the nails, and put my hand into his side, I will never believe it!"
A week later, his disciples were again inside, and Thomas was with them. Even though the doors were shut, Jesus came, stood among them, and said, "Peace be with you." 26Eight days later the disciples were again together in the house, and Thomas was with them. Although the doors were locked, Jesus came and stood among them and said, "Peace be with you!"
Then he told Thomas, "Put your finger here, and look at my hands. Take your hand, and put it into my side. Stop doubting, but believe."27Then he said to Thomas, "Put your finger here, and examine my hands. Extend your hand and put it into my side. Do not continue in your unbelief, but believe."
Thomas answered him, "My Lord and my God!"28Thomas replied to him, "My Lord and my God!"
Jesus told him, "Is it because you've seen me that you have believed? How blessed are those who have never seen me and yet have believed!"29Jesus said to him, "Have you believed because you have seen me? Blessed are the people who have not seen and yet have believed."
Jesus performed many other signs in the presence of his disciples that are not recorded in this book. 30Now Jesus performed many other miraculous signs in the presence of the disciples, which are not recorded in this book.
But these have been recorded so that you may believe that Jesus is the Messiah, the Son of God, and so that through believing you may have life in his name.31But these are recorded so that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that by believing you may have life in his name.
