Jesus, however, went to the Mount of Olives. 1But Jesus went to the Mount of Olives.
At daybreak he appeared again in the Temple, and all the people came to him. So he sat down and began to teach them. 2Early in the morning He came again into the temple, and all the people were coming to Him; and He sat down and began to teach them.
But the scribes and the Pharisees brought a woman who had been caught in adultery. After setting her before them,3The scribes and the Pharisees brought a woman caught in adultery, and having set her in the center of the court,
they told him, "Teacher, this woman has been caught in the very act of adultery. 4they said to Him, "Teacher, this woman has been caught in adultery, in the very act.
Now in the Law, Moses commanded us to stone such women to death. What do you say?" 5"Now in the Law Moses commanded us to stone such women; what then do You say?"
They said this to test him, so that they might have a charge against him. But Jesus bent down and began to write on the ground with his finger.6They were saying this, testing Him, so that they might have grounds for accusing Him. But Jesus stooped down and with His finger wrote on the ground.
When they persisted in questioning him, he straightened up and told them, "Let the person among you who is without sin be the first to throw a stone at her." 7But when they persisted in asking Him, He straightened up, and said to them, "He who is without sin among you, let him be the first to throw a stone at her."
Then he bent down again and continued writing on the ground.8Again He stooped down and wrote on the ground.
When they heard this, they went away one by one, beginning with the oldest, and he was left alone with the woman standing there.9When they heard it, they began to go out one by one, beginning with the older ones, and He was left alone, and the woman, where she was, in the center of the court.
Then Jesus stood up and asked her, "Dear lady, where are your accusers? Hasn't anyone condemned you?"10Straightening up, Jesus said to her, "Woman, where are they? Did no one condemn you?"
"No one, sir," she replied. Then Jesus said, "I don't condemn you, either. Go home, and from now on don't sin anymore." 11She said, "No one, Lord." And Jesus said, "I do not condemn you, either. Go. From now on sin no more."
Later on, Jesus spoke to them again, saying, "I am the light of the world. The one who follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life."12Then Jesus again spoke to them, saying, "I am the Light of the world; he who follows Me will not walk in the darkness, but will have the Light of life."
The Pharisees told him, "You're testifying about yourself. Your testimony isn't valid." 13So the Pharisees said to Him, "You are testifying about Yourself; Your testimony is not true."
Jesus answered them, "Even though I'm testifying about myself, my testimony is valid because I know where I've come from and where I'm going. But you don't know where I come from or where I'm going. 14Jesus answered and said to them, "Even if I testify about Myself, My testimony is true, for I know where I came from and where I am going; but you do not know where I come from or where I am going.
You're judging by human standards, but I'm not judging anyone. 15"You judge according to the flesh; I am not judging anyone.
Yet even if I should judge, my judgment would be valid, because it is not I alone who judges, but I and the one who sent me. 16"But even if I do judge, My judgment is true; for I am not alone in it, but I and the Father who sent Me.
In your own Law it is written that the testimony of two people is valid.17"Even in your law it has been written that the testimony of two men is true.
I'm testifying about myself, and the Father who sent me is testifying about me."18"I am He who testifies about Myself, and the Father who sent Me testifies about Me."
Then they asked him, "Where is this Father of yours?" Jesus replied, "You don't know me or my Father. If you had known me, you would've known my Father, too." 19So they were saying to Him, "Where is Your Father?" Jesus answered, "You know neither Me nor My Father; if you knew Me, you would know My Father also."
He spoke these words in the treasury, while he was teaching in the Temple. Yet no one arrested him, because his hour had not yet come.20These words He spoke in the treasury, as He taught in the temple; and no one seized Him, because His hour had not yet come.
Later on, he told them again, "I'm going away, and you'll look for me, but you will die in your sin. You cannot come where I'm going."21Then He said again to them, "I go away, and you will seek Me, and will die in your sin; where I am going, you cannot come."
So the Jewish leaders were asking, "He isn't going to kill himself, is he? Is that why he said, 'You cannot come where I'm going'?"22So the Jews were saying, "Surely He will not kill Himself, will He, since He says, 'Where I am going, you cannot come '?"
He told them, "You are from below, I'm from above. You are of this world, but I'm not of this world. 23And He was saying to them, "You are from below, I am from above; you are of this world, I am not of this world.
That is why I told you that you will die in your sins, for unless you believe that I AM, you'll die in your sins."24"Therefore I said to you that you will die in your sins; for unless you believe that I am He, you will die in your sins."
Then they asked him, "Who are you?" Jesus told them, "What have I been telling you all along?25So they were saying to Him, "Who are You?" Jesus said to them, "What have I been saying to you from the beginning?
I have much to say about you and to condemn you for. But the one who sent me is truthful, and what I've heard from him I declare to the world."26"I have many things to speak and to judge concerning you, but He who sent Me is true; and the things which I heard from Him, these I speak to the world."
They didn't realize that he was talking to them about the Father. 27They did not realize that He had been speaking to them about the Father.
So Jesus told them, "When you have lifted up the Son of Man, then you will know that I AM, and that I do nothing on my own authority. Instead, I speak only what the Father has taught me. 28So Jesus said, "When you lift up the Son of Man, then you will know that I am He, and I do nothing on My own initiative, but I speak these things as the Father taught Me.
Moreover, the one who sent me is with me. He has never left me alone, because I always do what pleases him." 29"And He who sent Me is with Me; He has not left Me alone, for I always do the things that are pleasing to Him."
While he was saying these things, many believed in him.30As He spoke these things, many came to believe in Him.
So Jesus told those Jews who had believed in him, "If you continue in my word, you are really my disciples. 31So Jesus was saying to those Jews who had believed Him, "If you continue in My word, then you are truly disciples of Mine;
And you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free."32and you will know the truth, and the truth will make you free."
They replied to him, "We are Abraham's descendants and have never been slaves to anybody. So how can you say, 'You will be set free'?"33They answered Him, "We are Abraham's descendants and have never yet been enslaved to anyone; how is it that You say, 'You will become free '?"
Jesus answered them, "Truly, I tell all of you emphatically, that everyone who commits sin is a slave of sin.34Jesus answered them, "Truly, truly, I say to you, everyone who commits sin is the slave of sin.
The slave does not remain in the household forever, but the son does remain forever. 35"The slave does not remain in the house forever; the son does remain forever.
So if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed!"36"So if the Son makes you free, you will be free indeed.
"I know that you are Abraham's descendants. Yet you are trying to kill me because you've not received what I've told you. 37"I know that you are Abraham's descendants; yet you seek to kill Me, because My word has no place in you.
I declare what I've seen in my Father's presence, and you're doing what you've heard from your father."38"I speak the things which I have seen with My Father; therefore you also do the things which you heard from your father."
They replied to him, "Our father is Abraham!" Jesus told them, "If you were Abraham's children, you would be doing what Abraham did.39They answered and said to Him, "Abraham is our father." Jesus said to them, "If you are Abraham's children, do the deeds of Abraham.
But now you're trying to kill me, a man who has told you the truth that I heard from God. Abraham would'nt have done that. 40"But as it is, you are seeking to kill Me, a man who has told you the truth, which I heard from God; this Abraham did not do.
You are doing your father's actions." They told him, "We're not illegitimate children. We have one Father, God himself."41"You are doing the deeds of your father." They said to Him, "We were not born of fornication; we have one Father: God."
Jesus told them, "If God were your Father, you would've loved me, because I came from God and am here. I haven't come on my own accord, but he sent me. 42Jesus said to them, "If God were your Father, you would love Me, for I proceeded forth and have come from God, for I have not even come on My own initiative, but He sent Me.
Why don't you understand what I've said? It's because you can't listen to my words. 43"Why do you not understand what I am saying? It is because you cannot hear My word.
You belong to your father the devil, and you want to carry out the desires of your father. He was a murderer from the beginning and has never stood for truth, since there is no truth in him. Whenever he tells a lie, he speaks in character, because he is a liar and the father of lies. 44"You are of your father the devil, and you want to do the desires of your father. He was a murderer from the beginning, and does not stand in the truth because there is no truth in him. Whenever he speaks a lie, he speaks from his own nature, for he is a liar and the father of lies.
But it is because I speak the truth that you don't believe me. 45"But because I speak the truth, you do not believe Me.
Can any of you prove me guilty of sin? If I'm telling the truth, why don't you believe me? 46"Which one of you convicts Me of sin? If I speak truth, why do you not believe Me?
The one who belongs to God listens to the words of God. The reason you don't listen is because you don't belong to God."47"He who is of God hears the words of God; for this reason you do not hear them, because you are not of God."
The Jewish leaders replied to him, "Surely we're right in saying that you are a Samaritan and have a demon, aren't we?"48The Jews answered and said to Him, "Do we not say rightly that You are a Samaritan and have a demon?"
Jesus answered, "I don't have a demon. On the contrary, I honor my Father, and you dishonor me. 49Jesus answered, "I do not have a demon; but I honor My Father, and you dishonor Me.
I don't seek my own glory. There is one who seeks it, and he is the Judge. 50"But I do not seek My glory; there is One who seeks and judges.
Truly, I tell all of you emphatically, if anyone keeps my word, he will never see death."51"Truly, truly, I say to you, if anyone keeps My word he will never see death."
Then the Jewish leaders told him, "Now we really know that you have a demon. Abraham died, and so did the prophets, but you say, 'If anyone keeps my word, he will never taste death.' 52The Jews said to Him, "Now we know that You have a demon. Abraham died, and the prophets also; and You say, 'If anyone keeps My word, he will never taste of death.'
You aren't greater than our father Abraham, who died, are you? The prophets also died. Who are you making yourself out to be?"53"Surely You are not greater than our father Abraham, who died? The prophets died too; whom do You make Yourself out to be?"
Jesus answered, "If I were trying to glorify myself, my glory would mean nothing. It is my Father who glorifies me, of whom you say, 'He is our God.' 54Jesus answered, "If I glorify Myself, My glory is nothing; it is My Father who glorifies Me, of whom you say, 'He is our God';
You don't know him, but I know him. If I were to say that I don't know him, I would be a liar like you. But I do know him and keep his word. 55and you have not come to know Him, but I know Him; and if I say that I do not know Him, I will be a liar like you, but I do know Him and keep His word.
Your father Abraham rejoiced that he would see my day, and he saw it and was glad."56"Your father Abraham rejoiced to see My day, and he saw it and was glad."
Then the Jewish leaders asked him, "You are not even 50 years old, yet you have seen Abraham?" 57So the Jews said to Him, "You are not yet fifty years old, and have You seen Abraham?"
Jesus told them, "Truly, I tell all of you emphatically, before there was an Abraham, I AM!" 58Jesus said to them, "Truly, truly, I say to you, before Abraham was born, I am."
At this, they picked up stones to throw at him, but Jesus hid himself and went out of the Temple.59Therefore they picked up stones to throw at Him, but Jesus hid Himself and went out of the temple.
