For this reason we must pay closer attention to the things we have heard, or we may drift away, | 1We must pay the most careful attention, therefore, to what we have heard, so that we do not drift away. |
because if the message spoken by angels was reliable, and every violation and act of disobedience received its just punishment, | 2For since the message spoken through angels was binding, and every violation and disobedience received its just punishment, |
how will we escape if we neglect a salvation as great as this? It was first proclaimed by the Lord himself, and then it was confirmed to us by those who heard him, | 3how shall we escape if we ignore so great a salvation? This salvation, which was first announced by the Lord, was confirmed to us by those who heard him. |
while God added his testimony through signs, wonders, various miracles, and gifts of the Holy Spirit distributed according to his will. | 4God also testified to it by signs, wonders and various miracles, and by gifts of the Holy Spirit distributed according to his will. |
For he did not put the coming world we are talking about under the control of angels. | 5It is not to angels that he has subjected the world to come, about which we are speaking. |
Instead, someone has declared somewhere, "What is man that you should remember him, or the son of man that you should care for him? | 6But there is a place where someone has testified: "What is mankind that you are mindful of them, a son of man that you care for him? |
You made him a little lower than the angels, yet you crowned him with glory and honor | 7You made them a little lower than the angels; you crowned them with glory and honor |
and put everything under his feet." Now when God put everything under him, he left nothing outside his control. However, at the present time we do not yet see everything put under him. | 8and put everything under their feet." In putting everything under them, God left nothing that is not subject to them. Yet at present we do not see everything subject to them. |
But we do see someone who was made a little lower than the angels. He is Jesus, who is crowned with glory and honor because he suffered death, so that by the grace of God he might experience death for everyone. | 9But we do see Jesus, who was made lower than the angels for a little while, now crowned with glory and honor because he suffered death, so that by the grace of God he might taste death for everyone. |
It was fitting that God, for whom and through whom everything exists, should make the pioneer of their salvation perfect through suffering as part of his plan to glorify many children, | 10In bringing many sons and daughters to glory, it was fitting that God, for whom and through whom everything exists, should make the pioneer of their salvation perfect through what he suffered. |
because both the one who sanctifies and those who are being sanctified all have the same Father. That is why Jesus is not ashamed to call them brothers | 11Both the one who makes people holy and those who are made holy are of the same family. So Jesus is not ashamed to call them brothers and sisters. |
when he says, "I will announce your name to my brothers. I will praise you within the congregation." | 12He says, "I will declare your name to my brothers and sisters; in the assembly I will sing your praises." |
And again, "I will trust him." And again, "I am here with the children God has given me." | 13And again, "I will put my trust in him." And again he says, "Here am I, and the children God has given me." |
Therefore, since the children have flesh and blood, he himself also shared the same things, so that by his death he might destroy the one who has the power of death (that is, the devil) | 14Since the children have flesh and blood, he too shared in their humanity so that by his death he might break the power of him who holds the power of death--that is, the devil-- |
and might free those who were slaves all their lives because they were terrified by death. | 15and free those who all their lives were held in slavery by their fear of death. |
For it is clear that he did not come to help angels. No, he came to help Abraham's descendants, | 16For surely it is not angels he helps, but Abraham's descendants. |
thereby becoming like his brothers in every way, so that he could be a merciful and faithful high priest in service to God and could atone for the people's sins. | 17For this reason he had to be made like them, fully human in every way, in order that he might become a merciful and faithful high priest in service to God, and that he might make atonement for the sins of the people. |
Because he himself suffered when he was tempted, he is able to help those who are being tempted. | 18Because he himself suffered when he was tempted, he is able to help those who are being tempted. |
