| 1Then he called his twelve disciples together, and gave them power and authority over all devils, and to cure diseases. | 1When Jesus had called the Twelve together, he gave them power and authority to drive out all demons and to cure diseases, |
| 2And he sent them to preach the kingdom of God, and to heal the sick. | 2and he sent them out to proclaim the kingdom of God and to heal the sick. |
| 3And he said unto them, Take nothing for your journey, neither staves, nor scrip, neither bread, neither money; neither have two coats apiece. | 3He told them: "Take nothing for the journey--no staff, no bag, no bread, no money, no extra shirt. |
| 4And whatsoever house ye enter into, there abide, and thence depart. | 4Whatever house you enter, stay there until you leave that town. |
| 5And whosoever will not receive you, when ye go out of that city, shake off the very dust from your feet for a testimony against them. | 5If people do not welcome you, leave their town and shake the dust off your feet as a testimony against them." |
| 6And they departed, and went through the towns, preaching the gospel, and healing every where. | 6So they set out and went from village to village, proclaiming the good news and healing people everywhere. |
| 7Now Herod the tetrarch heard of all that was done by him: and he was perplexed, because that it was said of some, that John was risen from the dead; | 7Now Herod the tetrarch heard about all that was going on. And he was perplexed because some were saying that John had been raised from the dead, |
| 8And of some, that Elias had appeared; and of others, that one of the old prophets was risen again. | 8others that Elijah had appeared, and still others that one of the prophets of long ago had come back to life. |
| 9And Herod said, John have I beheaded: but who is this, of whom I hear such things? And he desired to see him. | 9But Herod said, "I beheaded John. Who, then, is this I hear such things about?" And he tried to see him. |
| 10And the apostles, when they were returned, told him all that they had done. And he took them, and went aside privately into a desert place belonging to the city called Bethsaida. | 10When the apostles returned, they reported to Jesus what they had done. Then he took them with him and they withdrew by themselves to a town called Bethsaida, |
| 11And the people, when they knew it, followed him: and he received them, and spake unto them of the kingdom of God, and healed them that had need of healing. | 11but the crowds learned about it and followed him. He welcomed them and spoke to them about the kingdom of God, and healed those who needed healing. |
| 12And when the day began to wear away, then came the twelve, and said unto him, Send the multitude away, that they may go into the towns and country round about, and lodge, and get victuals: for we are here in a desert place. | 12Late in the afternoon the Twelve came to him and said, "Send the crowd away so they can go to the surrounding villages and countryside and find food and lodging, because we are in a remote place here." |
| 13But he said unto them, Give ye them to eat. And they said, We have no more but five loaves and two fishes; except we should go and buy meat for all this people. | 13He replied, "You give them something to eat." They answered, "We have only five loaves of bread and two fish--unless we go and buy food for all this crowd." |
| 14For they were about five thousand men. And he said to his disciples, Make them sit down by fifties in a company. | 14(About five thousand men were there.) But he said to his disciples, "Have them sit down in groups of about fifty each." |
| 15And they did so, and made them all sit down. | 15The disciples did so, and everyone sat down. |
| 16Then he took the five loaves and the two fishes, and looking up to heaven, he blessed them, and brake, and gave to the disciples to set before the multitude. | 16Taking the five loaves and the two fish and looking up to heaven, he gave thanks and broke them. Then he gave them to the disciples to distribute to the people. |
| 17And they did eat, and were all filled: and there was taken up of fragments that remained to them twelve baskets. | 17They all ate and were satisfied, and the disciples picked up twelve basketfuls of broken pieces that were left over. |
| 18And it came to pass, as he was alone praying, his disciples were with him: and he asked them, saying, Whom say the people that I am? | 18Once when Jesus was praying in private and his disciples were with him, he asked them, "Who do the crowds say I am?" |
| 19They answering said, John the Baptist; but some say, Elias; and others say, that one of the old prophets is risen again. | 19They replied, "Some say John the Baptist; others say Elijah; and still others, that one of the prophets of long ago has come back to life." |
| 20He said unto them, But whom say ye that I am? Peter answering said, The Christ of God. | 20"But what about you?" he asked. "Who do you say I am?" Peter answered, "God's Messiah." |
| 21And he straitly charged them, and commanded them to tell no man that thing; | 21Jesus strictly warned them not to tell this to anyone. |
| 22Saying, The Son of man must suffer many things, and be rejected of the elders and chief priests and scribes, and be slain, and be raised the third day. | 22And he said, "The Son of Man must suffer many things and be rejected by the elders, the chief priests and the teachers of the law, and he must be killed and on the third day be raised to life." |
| 23And he said to them all, If any man will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross daily, and follow me. | 23Then he said to them all: "Whoever wants to be my disciple must deny themselves and take up their cross daily and follow me. |
| 24For whosoever will save his life shall lose it: but whosoever will lose his life for my sake, the same shall save it. | 24For whoever wants to save their life will lose it, but whoever loses their life for me will save it. |
| 25For what is a man advantaged, if he gain the whole world, and lose himself, or be cast away? | 25What good is it for someone to gain the whole world, and yet lose or forfeit their very self? |
| 26For whosoever shall be ashamed of me and of my words, of him shall the Son of man be ashamed, when he shall come in his own glory, and in his Father's, and of the holy angels. | 26Whoever is ashamed of me and my words, the Son of Man will be ashamed of them when he comes in his glory and in the glory of the Father and of the holy angels. |
| 27But I tell you of a truth, there be some standing here, which shall not taste of death, till they see the kingdom of God. | 27"Truly I tell you, some who are standing here will not taste death before they see the kingdom of God." |
| 28And it came to pass about an eight days after these sayings, he took Peter and John and James, and went up into a mountain to pray. | 28About eight days after Jesus said this, he took Peter, John and James with him and went up onto a mountain to pray. |
| 29And as he prayed, the fashion of his countenance was altered, and his raiment was white and glistering. | 29As he was praying, the appearance of his face changed, and his clothes became as bright as a flash of lightning. |
| 30And, behold, there talked with him two men, which were Moses and Elias: | 30Two men, Moses and Elijah, appeared in glorious splendor, talking with Jesus. |
| 31Who appeared in glory, and spake of his decease which he should accomplish at Jerusalem. | 31They spoke about his departure, which he was about to bring to fulfillment at Jerusalem. |
| 32But Peter and they that were with him were heavy with sleep: and when they were awake, they saw his glory, and the two men that stood with him. | 32Peter and his companions were very sleepy, but when they became fully awake, they saw his glory and the two men standing with him. |
| 33And it came to pass, as they departed from him, Peter said unto Jesus, Master, it is good for us to be here: and let us make three tabernacles; one for thee, and one for Moses, and one for Elias: not knowing what he said. | 33As the men were leaving Jesus, Peter said to him, "Master, it is good for us to be here. Let us put up three shelters--one for you, one for Moses and one for Elijah." (He did not know what he was saying.) |
| 34While he thus spake, there came a cloud, and overshadowed them: and they feared as they entered into the cloud. | 34While he was speaking, a cloud appeared and covered them, and they were afraid as they entered the cloud. |
| 35And there came a voice out of the cloud, saying, This is my beloved Son: hear him. | 35A voice came from the cloud, saying, "This is my Son, whom I have chosen; listen to him." |
| 36And when the voice was past, Jesus was found alone. And they kept it close, and told no man in those days any of those things which they had seen. | 36When the voice had spoken, they found that Jesus was alone. The disciples kept this to themselves and did not tell anyone at that time what they had seen. |
| 37And it came to pass, that on the next day, when they were come down from the hill, much people met him. | 37The next day, when they came down from the mountain, a large crowd met him. |
| 38And, behold, a man of the company cried out, saying, Master, I beseech thee, look upon my son: for he is mine only child. | 38A man in the crowd called out, "Teacher, I beg you to look at my son, for he is my only child. |
| 39And, lo, a spirit taketh him, and he suddenly crieth out; and it teareth him that he foameth again, and bruising him hardly departeth from him. | 39A spirit seizes him and he suddenly screams; it throws him into convulsions so that he foams at the mouth. It scarcely ever leaves him and is destroying him. |
| 40And I besought thy disciples to cast him out; and they could not. | 40I begged your disciples to drive it out, but they could not." |
| 41And Jesus answering said, O faithless and perverse generation, how long shall I be with you, and suffer you? Bring thy son hither. | 41"You unbelieving and perverse generation," Jesus replied, "how long shall I stay with you and put up with you? Bring your son here." |
| 42And as he was yet a coming, the devil threw him down, and tare him. And Jesus rebuked the unclean spirit, and healed the child, and delivered him again to his father. | 42Even while the boy was coming, the demon threw him to the ground in a convulsion. But Jesus rebuked the impure spirit, healed the boy and gave him back to his father. |
| 43And they were all amazed at the mighty power of God. But while they wondered every one at all things which Jesus did, he said unto his disciples, | 43And they were all amazed at the greatness of God. While everyone was marveling at all that Jesus did, he said to his disciples, |
| 44Let these sayings sink down into your ears: for the Son of man shall be delivered into the hands of men. | 44"Listen carefully to what I am about to tell you: The Son of Man is going to be delivered into the hands of men." |
| 45But they understood not this saying, and it was hid from them, that they perceived it not: and they feared to ask him of that saying. | 45But they did not understand what this meant. It was hidden from them, so that they did not grasp it, and they were afraid to ask him about it. |
| 46Then there arose a reasoning among them, which of them should be greatest. | 46An argument started among the disciples as to which of them would be the greatest. |
| 47And Jesus, perceiving the thought of their heart, took a child, and set him by him, | 47Jesus, knowing their thoughts, took a little child and had him stand beside him. |
| 48And said unto them, Whosoever shall receive this child in my name receiveth me: and whosoever shall receive me receiveth him that sent me: for he that is least among you all, the same shall be great. | 48Then he said to them, "Whoever welcomes this little child in my name welcomes me; and whoever welcomes me welcomes the one who sent me. For it is the one who is least among you all who is the greatest." |
| 49And John answered and said, Master, we saw one casting out devils in thy name; and we forbad him, because he followeth not with us. | 49"Master," said John, "we saw someone driving out demons in your name and we tried to stop him, because he is not one of us." |
| 50And Jesus said unto him, Forbid him not: for he that is not against us is for us. | 50"Do not stop him," Jesus said, "for whoever is not against you is for you." |
| 51And it came to pass, when the time was come that he should be received up, he stedfastly set his face to go to Jerusalem, | 51As the time approached for him to be taken up to heaven, Jesus resolutely set out for Jerusalem. |
| 52And sent messengers before his face: and they went, and entered into a village of the Samaritans, to make ready for him. | 52And he sent messengers on ahead, who went into a Samaritan village to get things ready for him; |
| 53And they did not receive him, because his face was as though he would go to Jerusalem. | 53but the people there did not welcome him, because he was heading for Jerusalem. |
| 54And when his disciples James and John saw this, they said, Lord, wilt thou that we command fire to come down from heaven, and consume them, even as Elias did? | 54When the disciples James and John saw this, they asked, "Lord, do you want us to call fire down from heaven to destroy them?" |
| 55But he turned, and rebuked them, and said, Ye know not what manner of spirit ye are of. | 55But Jesus turned and rebuked them. |
| 56For the Son of man is not come to destroy men's lives, but to save them. And they went to another village. | 56Then he and his disciples went to another village. |
| 57And it came to pass, that, as they went in the way, a certain man said unto him, Lord, I will follow thee whithersoever thou goest. | 57As they were walking along the road, a man said to him, "I will follow you wherever you go." |
| 58And Jesus said unto him, Foxes have holes, and birds of the air have nests; but the Son of man hath not where to lay his head. | 58Jesus replied, "Foxes have dens and birds have nests, but the Son of Man has no place to lay his head." |
| 59And he said unto another, Follow me. But he said, Lord, suffer me first to go and bury my father. | 59He said to another man, "Follow me." But he replied, "Lord, first let me go and bury my father." |
| 60Jesus said unto him, Let the dead bury their dead: but go thou and preach the kingdom of God. | 60Jesus said to him, "Let the dead bury their own dead, but you go and proclaim the kingdom of God." |
| 61And another also said, Lord, I will follow thee; but let me first go bid them farewell, which are at home at my house. | 61Still another said, "I will follow you, Lord; but first let me go back and say goodbye to my family." |
| 62And Jesus said unto him, No man, having put his hand to the plough, and looking back, is fit for the kingdom of God. | 62Jesus replied, "No one who puts a hand to the plow and looks back is fit for service in the kingdom of God." |
