A disciple was there, named Timothy, the son of a Jewish woman who was a believer, but his father was a Greek.
and he was well spoken of by the brethren who were in Lystra and Iconium.2He was well spoken of by the brothers at Lystra and Iconium.
Paul wanted this man to go with him; and he took him and circumcised him because of the Jews who were in those parts, for they all knew that his father was a Greek.3Paul wanted Timothy to accompany him, and he took him and circumcised him because of the Jews who were in those places, for they all knew that his father was a Greek.
Now while they were passing through the cities, they were delivering the decrees which had been decided upon by the apostles and elders who were in Jerusalem, for them to observe.4As they went on their way through the cities, they delivered to them for observance the decisions that had been reached by the apostles and elders who were in Jerusalem.

They passed through the Phrygian and Galatian region, having been forbidden by the Holy Spirit to speak the word in Asia;6And they went through the region of Phrygia and Galatia, having been forbidden by the Holy Spirit to speak the word in Asia.
and after they came to Mysia, they were trying to go into Bithynia, and the Spirit of Jesus did not permit them;7And when they had come up to Mysia, they attempted to go into Bithynia, but the Spirit of Jesus did not allow them.
and passing by Mysia, they came down to Troas.8So, passing by Mysia, they went down to Troas.
A vision appeared to Paul in the night: a man of Macedonia was standing and appealing to him, and saying, "Come over to Macedonia and help us."9And a vision appeared to Paul in the night: a man of Macedonia was standing there, urging him and saying, “Come over to Macedonia and help us.”
When he had seen the vision, immediately we sought to go into Macedonia, concluding that God had called us to preach the gospel to them.10And when Paul had seen the vision, immediately we sought to go on into Macedonia, concluding that God had called us to preach the gospel to them.
So putting out to sea from Troas, we ran a straight course to Samothrace, and on the day following to Neapolis;11So, setting sail from Troas, we made a direct voyage to Samothrace, and the following day to Neapolis,
and from there to Philippi, which is a leading city of the district of Macedonia, a Roman colony; and we were staying in this city for some days.12and from there to Philippi, which is a leading city of the district of Macedonia and a Roman colony. We remained in this city some days.
And on the Sabbath day we went outside the gate to a riverside, where we were supposing that there would be a place of prayer; and we sat down and began speaking to the women who had assembled.13And on the Sabbath day we went outside the gate to the riverside, where we supposed there was a place of prayer, and we sat down and spoke to the women who had come together.
A woman named Lydia, from the city of Thyatira, a seller of purple fabrics, a worshiper of God, was listening; and the Lord opened her heart to respond to the things spoken by Paul.14One who heard us was a woman named Lydia, from the city of Thyatira, a seller of purple goods, who was a worshiper of God. The Lord opened her heart to pay attention to what was said by Paul.
And when she and her household had been baptized, she urged us, saying, "If you have judged me to be faithful to the Lord, come into my house and stay." And she prevailed upon us.15And after she was baptized, and her household as well, she urged us, saying, “If you have judged me to be faithful to the Lord, come to my house and stay.” And she prevailed upon us.
It happened that as we were going to the place of prayer, a slave-girl having a spirit of divination met us, who was bringing her masters much profit by fortune-telling.16As we were going to the place of prayer, we were met by a slave girl who had a spirit of divination and brought her owners much gain by fortune-telling.
Following after Paul and us, she kept crying out, saying, "These men are bond-servants of the Most High God, who are proclaiming to you the way of salvation."17She followed Paul and us, crying out, “These men are servants of the Most High God, who proclaim to you the way of salvation.”
She continued doing this for many days. But Paul was greatly annoyed, and turned and said to the spirit, "I command you in the name of Jesus Christ to come out of her!" And it came out at that very moment.18And this she kept doing for many days. Paul, having become greatly annoyed, turned and said to the spirit, “I command you in the name of Jesus Christ to come out of her.” And it came out that very hour.
But when her masters saw that their hope of profit was gone, they seized Paul and Silas and dragged them into the market place before the authorities,19But when her owners saw that their hope of gain was gone, they seized Paul and Silas and dragged them into the marketplace before the rulers.
and when they had brought them to the chief magistrates, they said, "These men are throwing our city into confusion, being Jews,20And when they had brought them to the magistrates, they said, “These men are Jews, and they are disturbing our city.
and are proclaiming customs which it is not lawful for us to accept or to observe, being Romans."21They advocate customs that are not lawful for us as Romans to accept or practice.”
The crowd rose up together against them, and the chief magistrates tore their robes off them and proceeded to order them to be beaten with rods.22The crowd joined in attacking them, and the magistrates tore the garments off them and gave orders to beat them with rods.
When they had struck them with many blows, they threw them into prison, commanding the jailer to guard them securely;23And when they had inflicted many blows upon them, they threw them into prison, ordering the jailer to keep them safely.
and he, having received such a command, threw them into the inner prison and fastened their feet in the stocks.24Having received this order, he put them into the inner prison and fastened their feet in the stocks.
But about midnight Paul and Silas were praying and singing hymns of praise to God, and the prisoners were listening to them;25About midnight Paul and Silas were praying and singing hymns to God, and the prisoners were listening to them,
and suddenly there came a great earthquake, so that the foundations of the prison house were shaken; and immediately all the doors were opened and everyone's chains were unfastened.26and suddenly there was a great earthquake, so that the foundations of the prison were shaken. And immediately all the doors were opened, and everyone’s bonds were unfastened.
When the jailer awoke and saw the prison doors opened, he drew his sword and was about to kill himself, supposing that the prisoners had escaped.27When the jailer woke and saw that the prison doors were open, he drew his sword and was about to kill himself, supposing that the prisoners had escaped.
But Paul cried out with a loud voice, saying, "Do not harm yourself, for we are all here!"28But Paul cried with a loud voice, “Do not harm yourself, for we are all here.”
And he called for lights and rushed in, and trembling with fear he fell down before Paul and Silas,29And the jailer called for lights and rushed in, and trembling with fear he fell down before Paul and Silas.
and after he brought them out, he said, "Sirs, what must I do to be saved?"30Then he brought them out and said, “Sirs, what must I do to be saved?”
They said, "Believe in the Lord Jesus, and you will be saved, you and your household."31And they said, “Believe in the Lord Jesus, and you will be saved, you and your household.”
And they spoke the word of the Lord to him together with all who were in his house.32And they spoke the word of the Lord to him and to all who were in his house.
And he took them that very hour of the night and washed their wounds, and immediately he was baptized, he and all his household.33And he took them the same hour of the night and washed their wounds; and he was baptized at once, he and all his family.
And he brought them into his house and set food before them, and rejoiced greatly, having believed in God with his whole household.34Then he brought them up into his house and set food before them. And he rejoiced along with his entire household that he had believed in God.
Now when day came, the chief magistrates sent their policemen, saying, "Release those men."35But when it was day, the magistrates sent the police, saying, “Let those men go.”
And the jailer reported these words to Paul, saying, "The chief magistrates have sent to release you. Therefore come out now and go in peace."36And the jailer reported these words to Paul, saying, “The magistrates have sent to let you go. Therefore come out now and go in peace.”
But Paul said to them, "They have beaten us in public without trial, men who are Romans, and have thrown us into prison; and now are they sending us away secretly? No indeed! But let them come themselves and bring us out."37But Paul said to them, “They have beaten us publicly, uncondemned, men who are Roman citizens, and have thrown us into prison; and do they now throw us out secretly? No! Let them come themselves and take us out.”
The policemen reported these words to the chief magistrates. They were afraid when they heard that they were Romans,38The police reported these words to the magistrates, and they were afraid when they heard that they were Roman citizens.
and they came and appealed to them, and when they had brought them out, they kept begging them to leave the city.39So they came and apologized to them. And they took them out and asked them to leave the city.
They went out of the prison and entered the house of Lydia, and when they saw the brethren, they encouraged them and departed.40So they went out of the prison and visited Lydia. And when they had seen the brothers, they encouraged them and departed.
