The proverbs of Solomon. A wise son makes a father glad, But a foolish son is a grief to his mother. | 1The proverbs of Solomon: A wise son brings joy to his father, but a foolish son brings grief to his mother. |
Ill-gotten gains do not profit, But righteousness delivers from death. | 2Ill-gotten treasures have no lasting value, but righteousness delivers from death. |
The LORD will not allow the righteous to hunger, But He will reject the craving of the wicked. | 3The LORD does not let the righteous go hungry, but he thwarts the craving of the wicked. |
Poor is he who works with a negligent hand, But the hand of the diligent makes rich. | 4Lazy hands make for poverty, but diligent hands bring wealth. |
He who gathers in summer is a son who acts wisely, But he who sleeps in harvest is a son who acts shamefully. | 5He who gathers crops in summer is a prudent son, but he who sleeps during harvest is a disgraceful son. |
Blessings are on the head of the righteous, But the mouth of the wicked conceals violence. | 6Blessings crown the head of the righteous, but violence overwhelms the mouth of the wicked. |
The memory of the righteous is blessed, But the name of the wicked will rot. | 7The name of the righteous is used in blessings, but the name of the wicked will rot. |
The wise of heart will receive commands, But a babbling fool will be ruined. | 8The wise in heart accept commands, but a chattering fool comes to ruin. |
He who walks in integrity walks securely, But he who perverts his ways will be found out. | 9Whoever walks in integrity walks securely, but whoever takes crooked paths will be found out. |
He who winks the eye causes trouble, And a babbling fool will be ruined. | 10Whoever winks maliciously causes grief, and a chattering fool comes to ruin. |
The mouth of the righteous is a fountain of life, But the mouth of the wicked conceals violence. | 11The mouth of the righteous is a fountain of life, but the mouth of the wicked conceals violence. |
Hatred stirs up strife, But love covers all transgressions. | 12Hatred stirs up conflict, but love covers over all wrongs. |
On the lips of the discerning, wisdom is found, But a rod is for the back of him who lacks understanding. | 13Wisdom is found on the lips of the discerning, but a rod is for the back of one who has no sense. |
Wise men store up knowledge, But with the mouth of the foolish, ruin is at hand. | 14The wise store up knowledge, but the mouth of a fool invites ruin. |
The rich man's wealth is his fortress, The ruin of the poor is their poverty. | 15The wealth of the rich is their fortified city, but poverty is the ruin of the poor. |
The wages of the righteous is life, The income of the wicked, punishment. | 16The wages of the righteous is life, but the earnings of the wicked are sin and death. |
He is on the path of life who heeds instruction, But he who ignores reproof goes astray. | 17Whoever heeds discipline shows the way to life, but whoever ignores correction leads others astray. |
He who conceals hatred has lying lips, And he who spreads slander is a fool. | 18Whoever conceals hatred with lying lips and spreads slander is a fool. |
When there are many words, transgression is unavoidable, But he who restrains his lips is wise. | 19Sin is not ended by multiplying words, but the prudent hold their tongues. |
The tongue of the righteous is as choice silver, The heart of the wicked is worth little. | 20The tongue of the righteous is choice silver, but the heart of the wicked is of little value. |
The lips of the righteous feed many, But fools die for lack of understanding. | 21The lips of the righteous nourish many, but fools die for lack of sense. |
It is the blessing of the LORD that makes rich, And He adds no sorrow to it. | 22The blessing of the LORD brings wealth, without painful toil for it. |
Doing wickedness is like sport to a fool, And so is wisdom to a man of understanding. | 23A fool finds pleasure in wicked schemes, but a person of understanding delights in wisdom. |
What the wicked fears will come upon him, But the desire of the righteous will be granted. | 24What the wicked dread will overtake them; what the righteous desire will be granted. |
When the whirlwind passes, the wicked is no more, But the righteous has an everlasting foundation. | 25When the storm has swept by, the wicked are gone, but the righteous stand firm forever. |
Like vinegar to the teeth and smoke to the eyes, So is the lazy one to those who send him. | 26As vinegar to the teeth and smoke to the eyes, so are sluggards to those who send them. |
The fear of the LORD prolongs life, But the years of the wicked will be shortened. | 27The fear of the LORD adds length to life, but the years of the wicked are cut short. |
The hope of the righteous is gladness, But the expectation of the wicked perishes. | 28The prospect of the righteous is joy, but the hopes of the wicked come to nothing. |
The way of the LORD is a stronghold to the upright, But ruin to the workers of iniquity. | 29The way of the LORD is a refuge for the blameless, but it is the ruin of those who do evil. |
The righteous will never be shaken, But the wicked will not dwell in the land. | 30The righteous will never be uprooted, but the wicked will not remain in the land. |
The mouth of the righteous flows with wisdom, But the perverted tongue will be cut out. | 31From the mouth of the righteous comes the fruit of wisdom, but a perverse tongue will be silenced. |
The lips of the righteous bring forth what is acceptable, But the mouth of the wicked what is perverted. | 32The lips of the righteous know what finds favor, but the mouth of the wicked only what is perverse. |
