1When Jesus had finished all these words, He said to His disciples,

2"You know that after two days the Passover is coming, and the Son of Man is to be handed over for crucifixion."

2 “As you know, Passover begins in two days, and the Son of Man will be handed over to be crucified.”

3Then the chief priests and the elders of the people were gathered together in the court of the high priest, named Caiaphas;

3At that same time the leading priests and elders were meeting at the residence of Caiaphas, the high priest,

4and they plotted together to seize Jesus by stealth and kill Him.

4plotting how to capture Jesus secretly and kill him.

5But they were saying, "Not during the festival, otherwise a riot might occur among the people."

5“But not during the Passover celebration,” they agreed, “or the people may riot.” Jesus Anointed at Bethany

6Now when Jesus was in Bethany, at the home of Simon the leper,

6Meanwhile, Jesus was in Bethany at the home of Simon, a man who had previously had leprosy.

7a woman came to Him with an alabaster vial of very costly perfume, and she poured it on His head as He reclined at the table.

7While he was eating, a woman came in with a beautiful alabaster jar of expensive perfume and poured it over his head.

8But the disciples were indignant when they saw this, and said, "Why this waste?

8The disciples were indignant when they saw this. “What a waste!” they said.

9"For this perfume might have been sold for a high price and the money given to the poor."

9“It could have been sold for a high price and the money given to the poor.”

10But Jesus, aware of this, said to them, "Why do you bother the woman? For she has done a good deed to Me.

10But Jesus, aware of this, replied, “Why criticize this woman for doing such a good thing to me?

11"For you always have the poor with you; but you do not always have Me.

11 You will always have the poor among you, but you will not always have me.

12"For when she poured this perfume on My body, she did it to prepare Me for burial.

12 She has poured this perfume on me to prepare my body for burial.

13"Truly I say to you, wherever this gospel is preached in the whole world, what this woman has done will also be spoken of in memory of her."

13 I tell you the truth, wherever the Good News is preached throughout the world, this woman’s deed will be remembered and discussed.” Judas Agrees to Betray Jesus

14Then one of the twelve, named Judas Iscariot, went to the chief priests

14Then Judas Iscariot, one of the twelve disciples, went to the leading priests

15and said, "What are you willing to give me to betray Him to you?" And they weighed out thirty pieces of silver to him.

15and asked, “How much will you pay me to betray Jesus to you?” And they gave him thirty pieces of silver.

16From then on he began looking for a good opportunity to betray Jesus.

16From that time on, Judas began looking for an opportunity to betray Jesus. The Last Supper

17Now on the first day of Unleavened Bread the disciples came to Jesus and asked, "Where do You want us to prepare for You to eat the Passover?"

17On the first day of the Festival of Unleavened Bread, the disciples came to Jesus and asked, “Where do you want us to prepare the Passover meal for you?”

18And He said, "Go into the city to a certain man, and say to him, 'The Teacher says, "My time is near; I am to keep the Passover at your house with My disciples."'"

18 “As you go into the city,” he told them, “you will see a certain man. Tell him, ‘The Teacher says: My time has come, and I will eat the Passover meal with my disciples at your house.’”

19The disciples did as Jesus had directed them; and they prepared the Passover.

19So the disciples did as Jesus told them and prepared the Passover meal there.

20Now when evening came, Jesus was reclining at the table with the twelve disciples.

20When it was evening, Jesus sat down at the table with the Twelve.

21As they were eating, He said, "Truly I say to you that one of you will betray Me."

21While they were eating, he said, “I tell you the truth, one of you will betray me.”

22Being deeply grieved, they each one began to say to Him, "Surely not I, Lord?"

22Greatly distressed, each one asked in turn, “Am I the one, Lord?”

23And He answered, "He who dipped his hand with Me in the bowl is the one who will betray Me.

23He replied, “One of you who has just eaten from this bowl with me will betray me.

24"The Son of Man is to go, just as it is written of Him; but woe to that man by whom the Son of Man is betrayed! It would have been good for that man if he had not been born."

24 For the Son of Man must die, as the Scriptures declared long ago. But how terrible it will be for the one who betrays him. It would be far better for that man if he had never been born!”

25And Judas, who was betraying Him, said, "Surely it is not I, Rabbi?" Jesus said to him, "You have said it yourself."

25Judas, the one who would betray him, also asked, “Rabbi, am I the one?” And Jesus told him, “You have said it.”

26While they were eating, Jesus took some bread, and after a blessing, He broke it and gave it to the disciples, and said, "Take, eat; this is My body."

26As they were eating, Jesus took some bread and blessed it. Then he broke it in pieces and gave it to the disciples, saying, “Take this and eat it, for this is my body.”

27And when He had taken a cup and given thanks, He gave it to them, saying, "Drink from it, all of you;

27And he took a cup of wine and gave thanks to God for it. He gave it to them and said, “Each of you drink from it,

28for this is My blood of the covenant, which is poured out for many for forgiveness of sins.

28 for this is my blood, which confirms the covenant between God and his people. It is poured out as a sacrifice to forgive the sins of many.

29"But I say to you, I will not drink of this fruit of the vine from now on until that day when I drink it new with you in My Father's kingdom."

29 Mark my words—I will not drink wine again until the day I drink it new with you in my Father’s Kingdom.”

30After singing a hymn, they went out to the Mount of Olives.

30Then they sang a hymn and went out to the Mount of Olives. Jesus Predicts Peter’s Denial

31Then Jesus said to them, "You will all fall away because of Me this night, for it is written, 'I WILL STRIKE DOWN THE SHEPHERD, AND THE SHEEP OF THE FLOCK SHALL BE SCATTERED.'

31On the way, Jesus told them, “Tonight all of you will desert me. For the Scriptures say, ‘God will strike the Shepherd, and the sheep of the flock will be scattered.’

32"But after I have been raised, I will go ahead of you to Galilee."

32 But after I have been raised from the dead, I will go ahead of you to Galilee and meet you there.”

33But Peter said to Him, "Even though all may fall away because of You, I will never fall away."

33Peter declared, “Even if everyone else deserts you, I will never desert you.”

34Jesus said to him, "Truly I say to you that this very night, before a rooster crows, you will deny Me three times."

34Jesus replied, “I tell you the truth, Peter—this very night, before the rooster crows, you will deny three times that you even know me.”

35Peter said to Him, "Even if I have to die with You, I will not deny You." All the disciples said the same thing too.

35“No!” Peter insisted. “Even if I have to die with you, I will never deny you!” And all the other disciples vowed the same. Jesus Prays in Gethsemane

36Then Jesus came with them to a place called Gethsemane, and said to His disciples, "Sit here while I go over there and pray."

36Then Jesus went with them to the olive grove called Gethsemane, and he said, “Sit here while I go over there to pray.”

37And He took with Him Peter and the two sons of Zebedee, and began to be grieved and distressed.

37He took Peter and Zebedee’s two sons, James and John, and he became anguished and distressed.

38Then He said to them, "My soul is deeply grieved, to the point of death; remain here and keep watch with Me."

38He told them, “My soul is crushed with grief to the point of death. Stay here and keep watch with me.”

39And He went a little beyond them, and fell on His face and prayed, saying, "My Father, if it is possible, let this cup pass from Me; yet not as I will, but as You will."

39He went on a little farther and bowed with his face to the ground, praying, “My Father! If it is possible, let this cup of suffering be taken away from me. Yet I want your will to be done, not mine.”

40And He came to the disciples and found them sleeping, and said to Peter, "So, you men could not keep watch with Me for one hour?

40Then he returned to the disciples and found them asleep. He said to Peter, “Couldn’t you watch with me even one hour?

41"Keep watching and praying that you may not enter into temptation; the spirit is willing, but the flesh is weak."

41 Keep watch and pray, so that you will not give in to temptation. For the spirit is willing, but the body is weak!”

42He went away again a second time and prayed, saying, "My Father, if this cannot pass away unless I drink it, Your will be done."

42Then Jesus left them a second time and prayed, “My Father! If this cup cannot be taken away unless I drink it, your will be done.”

43Again He came and found them sleeping, for their eyes were heavy.

43When he returned to them again, he found them sleeping, for they couldn’t keep their eyes open.

44And He left them again, and went away and prayed a third time, saying the same thing once more.

44So he went to pray a third time, saying the same things again.

45Then He came to the disciples and said to them, "Are you still sleeping and resting? Behold, the hour is at hand and the Son of Man is being betrayed into the hands of sinners.

45Then he came to the disciples and said, “Go ahead and sleep. Have your rest. But look—the time has come. The Son of Man is betrayed into the hands of sinners.

46"Get up, let us be going; behold, the one who betrays Me is at hand!"

46 Up, let’s be going. Look, my betrayer is here!” Jesus Is Betrayed and Arrested

47While He was still speaking, behold, Judas, one of the twelve, came up accompanied by a large crowd with swords and clubs, who came from the chief priests and elders of the people.

47And even as Jesus said this, Judas, one of the twelve disciples, arrived with a crowd of men armed with swords and clubs. They had been sent by the leading priests and elders of the people.

48Now he who was betraying Him gave them a sign, saying, "Whomever I kiss, He is the one; seize Him."

48The traitor, Judas, had given them a prearranged signal: “You will know which one to arrest when I greet him with a kiss.”

49Immediately Judas went to Jesus and said, "Hail, Rabbi!" and kissed Him.

49So Judas came straight to Jesus. “Greetings, Rabbi!” he exclaimed and gave him the kiss.

50And Jesus said to him, "Friend, do what you have come for." Then they came and laid hands on Jesus and seized Him.

50Jesus said, “My friend, go ahead and do what you have come for.” Then the others grabbed Jesus and arrested him.

51And behold, one of those who were with Jesus reached and drew out his sword, and struck the slave of the high priest and cut off his ear.

51But one of the men with Jesus pulled out his sword and struck the high priest’s slave, slashing off his ear.

52Then Jesus said to him, "Put your sword back into its place; for all those who take up the sword shall perish by the sword.

52 “Put away your sword,” Jesus told him. “Those who use the sword will die by the sword.

53"Or do you think that I cannot appeal to My Father, and He will at once put at My disposal more than twelve legions of angels?

53 Don’t you realize that I could ask my Father for thousands of angels to protect us, and he would send them instantly?

54"How then will the Scriptures be fulfilled, which say that it must happen this way?"

54 But if I did, how would the Scriptures be fulfilled that describe what must happen now?”

55At that time Jesus said to the crowds, "Have you come out with swords and clubs to arrest Me as you would against a robber? Every day I used to sit in the temple teaching and you did not seize Me.

55Then Jesus said to the crowd, “Am I some dangerous revolutionary, that you come with swords and clubs to arrest me? Why didn’t you arrest me in the Temple? I was there teaching every day.

56"But all this has taken place to fulfill the Scriptures of the prophets." Then all the disciples left Him and fled.

56 But this is all happening to fulfill the words of the prophets as recorded in the Scriptures.” At that point, all the disciples deserted him and fled. Jesus before the Council

57Those who had seized Jesus led Him away to Caiaphas, the high priest, where the scribes and the elders were gathered together.

57Then the people who had arrested Jesus led him to the home of Caiaphas, the high priest, where the teachers of religious law and the elders had gathered.

58But Peter was following Him at a distance as far as the courtyard of the high priest, and entered in, and sat down with the officers to see the outcome.

58Meanwhile, Peter followed him at a distance and came to the high priest’s courtyard. He went in and sat with the guards and waited to see how it would all end.

59Now the chief priests and the whole Council kept trying to obtain false testimony against Jesus, so that they might put Him to death.

59Inside, the leading priests and the entire high council were trying to find witnesses who would lie about Jesus, so they could put him to death.

60They did not find any, even though many false witnesses came forward. But later on two came forward,

60But even though they found many who agreed to give false witness, they could not use anyone’s testimony. Finally, two men came forward

61and said, "This man stated, 'I am able to destroy the temple of God and to rebuild it in three days.'"

61who declared, “This man said, ‘I am able to destroy the Temple of God and rebuild it in three days.’”

62The high priest stood up and said to Him, "Do You not answer? What is it that these men are testifying against You?"

62Then the high priest stood up and said to Jesus, “Well, aren’t you going to answer these charges? What do you have to say for yourself?”

63But Jesus kept silent. And the high priest said to Him, "I adjure You by the living God, that You tell us whether You are the Christ, the Son of God."

63But Jesus remained silent. Then the high priest said to him, “I demand in the name of the living God—tell us if you are the Messiah, the Son of God.”

64Jesus said to him, "You have said it yourself; nevertheless I tell you, hereafter you will see THE SON OF MAN SITTING AT THE RIGHT HAND OF POWER, and COMING ON THE CLOUDS OF HEAVEN."

64Jesus replied, “You have said it. And in the future you will see the Son of Man seated in the place of power at God’s right hand and coming on the clouds of heaven.”

65Then the high priest tore his robes and said, "He has blasphemed! What further need do we have of witnesses? Behold, you have now heard the blasphemy;

65Then the high priest tore his clothing to show his horror and said, “Blasphemy! Why do we need other witnesses? You have all heard his blasphemy.

66what do you think?" They answered, "He deserves death!"

66What is your verdict?” “Guilty!” they shouted. “He deserves to die!”

67Then they spat in His face and beat Him with their fists; and others slapped Him,

67Then they began to spit in Jesus’ face and beat him with their fists. And some slapped him,

68and said, "Prophesy to us, You Christ; who is the one who hit You?"

68jeering, “Prophesy to us, you Messiah! Who hit you that time?” Peter Denies Jesus

69Now Peter was sitting outside in the courtyard, and a servant-girl came to him and said, "You too were with Jesus the Galilean."

69Meanwhile, Peter was sitting outside in the courtyard. A servant girl came over and said to him, “You were one of those with Jesus the Galilean.”

70But he denied it before them all, saying, "I do not know what you are talking about."

70But Peter denied it in front of everyone. “I don’t know what you’re talking about,” he said.

71When he had gone out to the gateway, another servant-girl saw him and said to those who were there, "This man was with Jesus of Nazareth."

71Later, out by the gate, another servant girl noticed him and said to those standing around, “This man was with Jesus of Nazareth. ”

72And again he denied it with an oath, "I do not know the man."

72Again Peter denied it, this time with an oath. “I don’t even know the man,” he said.

73A little later the bystanders came up and said to Peter, "Surely you too are one of them; for even the way you talk gives you away."

73A little later some of the other bystanders came over to Peter and said, “You must be one of them; we can tell by your Galilean accent.”

74Then he began to curse and swear, "I do not know the man!" And immediately a rooster crowed.

74Peter swore, “A curse on me if I’m lying—I don’t know the man!” And immediately the rooster crowed.

75And Peter remembered the word which Jesus had said, "Before a rooster crows, you will deny Me three times." And he went out and wept bitterly.

75Suddenly, Jesus’ words flashed through Peter’s mind: “Before the rooster crows, you will deny three times that you even know me.” And he went away, weeping bitterly.
