But how then would the Scriptures be fulfilled
This phrase highlights the necessity of Jesus' actions in fulfilling Old Testament prophecies. The Scriptures referred to include passages like Isaiah 53, which speaks of the suffering servant, and Psalm 22, which describes the suffering and mockery of the Messiah. Jesus' life and mission were inextricably linked to these prophecies, demonstrating that His path was divinely ordained. The fulfillment of Scripture is a recurring theme in the Gospel of Matthew, emphasizing Jesus as the promised Messiah.

that say it must happen this way?
This part underscores the divine plan and the inevitability of the events leading to Jesus' crucifixion. The phrase "it must happen this way" indicates that the events were not random but part of God's sovereign will. This aligns with the concept of divine providence, where God's purposes are accomplished despite human actions. The necessity of these events is also seen in Jesus' earlier predictions of His death and resurrection (Matthew 16:21, 17:22-23). The phrase reflects the tension between human free will and divine sovereignty, a theme explored throughout Scripture.

Persons / Places / Events
1. Jesus Christ
The central figure in this passage, Jesus is speaking to His disciples during His arrest in the Garden of Gethsemane. He is emphasizing the necessity of fulfilling Scripture through His impending suffering and crucifixion.

2. Garden of Gethsemane
The location where Jesus is arrested. It is a place of prayer and agony for Jesus, symbolizing submission to God's will.

3. The Disciples
Specifically, Peter is present, who earlier attempted to defend Jesus with a sword. The disciples are witnesses to Jesus' arrest and His teachings on the fulfillment of Scripture.

4. The Arresting Party
Comprising chief priests, elders, and soldiers, they come to arrest Jesus, setting the stage for the fulfillment of the prophecies concerning His death.

5. The Scriptures
Refers to the Old Testament prophecies that foretold the suffering and death of the Messiah, which Jesus is fulfilling through His actions and experiences.
Teaching Points
The Sovereignty of God in Fulfillment of Prophecy
Jesus' arrest and crucifixion were not random events but were divinely orchestrated to fulfill God's redemptive plan as prophesied in Scripture.

Submission to God's Will
Jesus models perfect submission to the Father's will, even when it involves suffering. Believers are called to trust and submit to God's plan for their lives.

The Importance of Scripture
Jesus' reference to the fulfillment of Scripture underscores the authority and reliability of God's Word. Christians should study and rely on Scripture for guidance and understanding of God's purposes.

The Role of Suffering in God's Plan
Suffering is not outside of God's control but can be a part of His plan for greater purposes. Believers can find comfort in knowing that God can use their trials for His glory.(54) How then shall the scriptures be fulfilled?--The words indicate what one may reverently speak of as the source of the peace and calmness which had come to our Lord's human soul out of the depths of its agony. All that was sharpest and most bitter was part of a pre-ordained discipline. Not otherwise could the Scriptures be fulfilled, which had painted, if we may so speak, the picture of the ideal Sufferer not less vividly than that of the ideal Conqueror and King. It was meet that He too should be made perfect through sufferings (Hebrews 2:10).

Verse 54. - But how then (οϋν, i.e. if I now resist) shall the Scriptures be fulfilled, that thus it must be! There is no" but" in the original. In what way, Christ asks, shall God's determined counsel be accomplished, if you turn to the arm of the flesh, or if I use my Divine power to save myself? The will of God, as declared in Scripture, was that Jesus should be betrayed, seized, should suffer and die. Christ's will was one with the Father's and one with the Spirit's who inspired the Scripture, and therefore he must pass through each stage, undergo each detail, which the sacred volume specified. It was not merely that events were so arranged that they thus befell; nor merely that prophets of old foretold them; but there was some special moral duty and obligation in fulfilling them, which Christ, as one with the Father and the Holy Ghost, was minded to carry out in all perfection. Here was a ray of comfort for Peter and the other apostles. All was foreordained; its announcement in God's book proved it came from God, was under his control and ordering. Patience, therefore, and silent acquiescence were the duties now incumbent. "Be still, then, and know that I am God."
