| 1When you see your neighbor's ox or sheep going astray, do not ignore it; you must return it without fail to your neighbor. | 1If you see your fellow Israelite's ox or sheep straying, do not ignore it but be sure to take it back to its owner. |
| 2If the owner does not live near you or you do not know who the owner is, then you must corral the animal at your house and let it stay with you until the owner looks for it; then you must return it to him. | 2If they do not live near you or if you do not know who owns it, take it home with you and keep it until they come looking for it. | 15Then the father and mother of the young woman must produce the evidence of virginity for the elders of the city at the gate. | 15then the young woman's father and mother shall bring to the town elders at the gate proof that she was a virgin. |
| 16The young woman's father must say to the elders, "I gave my daughter to this man and he has rejected her. | 16Her father will say to the elders, "I gave my daughter in marriage to this man, but he dislikes her. |
| 17Moreover, he has raised accusations of impropriety by saying, 'I discovered your daughter was not a virgin,' but this is the evidence of my daughter's virginity!" The cloth must then be spread out before the city's elders. | 17Now he has slandered her and said, 'I did not find your daughter to be a virgin.' But here is the proof of my daughter's virginity." Then her parents shall display the cloth before the elders of the town, |
| 18The elders of that city must then seize the man and punish him. | 18and the elders shall take the man and punish him. |
| 19They will fine him one hundred shekels of silver and give them to the young woman's father, for the man who made the accusation ruined the reputation of an Israelite virgin. She will then become his wife and he may never divorce her as long as he lives. | 19They shall fine him a hundred shekels of silver and give them to the young woman's father, because this man has given an Israelite virgin a bad name. She shall continue to be his wife; he must not divorce her as long as he lives. |
| 20But if the accusation is true and the young woman was not a virgin, | 20If, however, the charge is true and no proof of the young woman's virginity can be found, |
| 21the men of her city must bring the young woman to the door of her father's house and stone her to death, for she has done a disgraceful thing in Israel by behaving like a prostitute while living in her father's house. In this way you will purge evil from among you. | 21she shall be brought to the door of her father's house and there the men of her town shall stone her to death. She has done an outrageous thing in Israel by being promiscuous while still in her father's house. You must purge the evil from among you. |
| 22If a man is caught having sexual relations with a married woman both the man who had relations with the woman and the woman herself must die; in this way you will purge evil from Israel. | 22If a man is found sleeping with another man's wife, both the man who slept with her and the woman must die. | 23If a virgin is engaged to a man and another man meets her in the city and has sexual relations with her, | 23If a man happens to meet in a town a virgin pledged to be married and he sleeps with her, |
| 24you must bring the two of them to the gate of that city and stone them to death, the young woman because she did not cry out though in the city and the man because he violated his neighbor's fiancee; in this way you will purge evil from among you. | 24you shall take both of them to the gate of that town and stone them to death--the young woman because she was in a town and did not scream for help, and the man because he violated another man's wife. | 25But if the man came across the engaged woman in the field and overpowered her and raped her, then only the rapist must die. | 25But if out in the country a man happens to meet a young woman pledged to be married and rapes her, only the man who has done this shall die. |
| 26You must not do anything to the young woman--she has done nothing deserving of death. This case is the same as when someone attacks another person and murders him, | 26Do nothing to the woman; she has committed no sin deserving death. This case is like that of someone who attacks and murders a neighbor, |
| 27for the man met her in the field and the engaged woman cried out, but there was no one to rescue her. | 27for the man found the young woman out in the country, and though the betrothed woman screamed, there was no one to rescue her. |
| 28Suppose a man comes across a virgin who is not engaged and overpowers and rapes her and they are discovered. | 28If a man happens to meet a virgin who is not pledged to be married and rapes her and they are discovered, |
| 29The man who has raped her must pay her father fifty shekels of silver and she must become his wife because he has violated her; he may never divorce her as long as he lives. | 29he shall pay her father fifty shekels of silver. He must marry the young woman, for he has violated her. He can never divorce her as long as he lives. |
| 30A man may not marry his father's former wife and in this way dishonor his father. | 30A man is not to marry his father's wife; he must not dishonor his father's bed. |
