Now Jesus left that place and came to his hometown, and his disciples followed him.1Jesus left there and went to his hometown, accompanied by his disciples.
When the Sabbath came, he began to teach in the synagogue. Many who heard him were astonished, saying, "Where did he get these ideas? And what is this wisdom that has been given to him? What are these miracles that are done through his hands?2When the Sabbath came, he began to teach in the synagogue, and many who heard him were amazed. "Where did this man get these things?" they asked. "What's this wisdom that has been given him? What are these remarkable miracles he is performing?
Isn't this the carpenter, the son of Mary and brother of James, Joses, Judas, and Simon? And aren't his sisters here with us?" And so they took offense at him.3Isn't this the carpenter? Isn't this Mary's son and the brother of James, Joseph, Judas and Simon? Aren't his sisters here with us?" And they took offense at him.
Then Jesus said to them, "A prophet is not without honor except in his hometown, and among his relatives, and in his own house."4Jesus said to them, "A prophet is not without honor except in his own town, among his relatives and in his own home."
He was not able to do a miracle there, except to lay his hands on a few sick people and heal them.5He could not do any miracles there, except lay his hands on a few sick people and heal them.
And he was amazed because of their unbelief. Then he went around among the villages and taught. 6He was amazed at their lack of faith. Then Jesus went around teaching from village to village.
Jesus called the twelve and began to send them out two by two. He gave them authority over the unclean spirits.7Calling the Twelve to him, he began to send them out two by two and gave them authority over impure spirits.
He instructed them to take nothing for the journey except a staff--no bread, no bag, no money in their belts--8These were his instructions: "Take nothing for the journey except a staff--no bread, no bag, no money in your belts.
and to put on sandals but not to wear two tunics.9Wear sandals but not an extra shirt.
He said to them, "Wherever you enter a house, stay there until you leave the area.10Whenever you enter a house, stay there until you leave that town.
If a place will not welcome you or listen to you, as you go out from there, shake the dust off your feet as a testimony against them."11And if any place will not welcome you or listen to you, leave that place and shake the dust off your feet as a testimony against them."
So they went out and preached that all should repent.12They went out and preached that people should repent.
They cast out many demons and anointed many sick people with oil and healed them. 13They drove out many demons and anointed many sick people with oil and healed them.
Now King Herod heard this, for Jesus' name had become known. Some were saying, "John the baptizer has been raised from the dead, and because of this, miraculous powers are at work in him."14King Herod heard about this, for Jesus' name had become well known. Some were saying, "John the Baptist has been raised from the dead, and that is why miraculous powers are at work in him."
Others said, "He is Elijah." Others said, "He is a prophet, like one of the prophets from the past."15Others said, "He is Elijah." And still others claimed, "He is a prophet, like one of the prophets of long ago."
But when Herod heard this, he said, "John, whom I beheaded, has been raised!"16But when Herod heard this, he said, "John, whom I beheaded, has been raised from the dead!"
For Herod himself had sent men, arrested John, and bound him in prison on account of Herodias, his brother Philip's wife, because Herod had married her.17For Herod himself had given orders to have John arrested, and he had him bound and put in prison. He did this because of Herodias, his brother Philip's wife, whom he had married.
For John had repeatedly told Herod, "It is not lawful for you to have your brother's wife."18For John had been saying to Herod, "It is not lawful for you to have your brother's wife."
So Herodias nursed a grudge against him and wanted to kill him. But she could not19So Herodias nursed a grudge against John and wanted to kill him. But she was not able to,
because Herod stood in awe of John and protected him, since he knew that John was a righteous and holy man. When Herod heard him, he was thoroughly baffled, and yet he liked to listen to John. 20because Herod feared John and protected him, knowing him to be a righteous and holy man. When Herod heard John, he was greatly puzzled; yet he liked to listen to him.
But a suitable day came, when Herod gave a banquet on his birthday for his court officials, military commanders, and leaders of Galilee.21Finally the opportune time came. On his birthday Herod gave a banquet for his high officials and military commanders and the leading men of Galilee.
When his daughter Herodias came in and danced, she pleased Herod and his dinner guests. The king said to the girl, "Ask me for whatever you want and I will give it to you."22When the daughter of Herodias came in and danced, she pleased Herod and his dinner guests. The king said to the girl, "Ask me for anything you want, and I'll give it to you."
He swore to her, "Whatever you ask I will give you, up to half my kingdom."23And he promised her with an oath, "Whatever you ask I will give you, up to half my kingdom."
So she went out and said to her mother, "What should I ask for?" Her mother said, "The head of John the baptizer."24She went out and said to her mother, "What shall I ask for?" "The head of John the Baptist," she answered.
Immediately she hurried back to the king and made her request: "I want the head of John the Baptist on a platter immediately."25At once the girl hurried in to the king with the request: "I want you to give me right now the head of John the Baptist on a platter."
Although it grieved the king deeply, he did not want to reject her request because of his oath and his guests.26The king was greatly distressed, but because of his oaths and his dinner guests, he did not want to refuse her.
So the king sent an executioner at once to bring John's head, and he went and beheaded John in prison.27So he immediately sent an executioner with orders to bring John's head. The man went, beheaded John in the prison,
He brought his head on a platter and gave it to the girl, and the girl gave it to her mother.28and brought back his head on a platter. He presented it to the girl, and she gave it to her mother.
When John's disciples heard this, they came and took his body and placed it in a tomb. 29On hearing of this, John's disciples came and took his body and laid it in a tomb.
Then the apostles gathered around Jesus and told him everything they had done and taught.30The apostles gathered around Jesus and reported to him all they had done and taught.
He said to them, "Come with me privately to an isolated place and rest a while" (for many were coming and going, and there was no time to eat).31Then, because so many people were coming and going that they did not even have a chance to eat, he said to them, "Come with me by yourselves to a quiet place and get some rest."
So they went away by themselves in a boat to some remote place.32So they went away by themselves in a boat to a solitary place.
But many saw them leaving and recognized them, and they hurried on foot from all the towns and arrived there ahead of them.33But many who saw them leaving recognized them and ran on foot from all the towns and got there ahead of them.
As Jesus came ashore he saw the large crowd and he had compassion on them, because they were like sheep without a shepherd. So he taught them many things. 34When Jesus landed and saw a large crowd, he had compassion on them, because they were like sheep without a shepherd. So he began teaching them many things.
When it was already late, his disciples came to him and said, "This is an isolated place and it is already very late.35By this time it was late in the day, so his disciples came to him. "This is a remote place," they said, "and it's already very late.
Send them away so that they can go into the surrounding countryside and villages and buy something for themselves to eat."36Send the people away so that they can go to the surrounding countryside and villages and buy themselves something to eat."
But he answered them, "You give them something to eat." And they said, "Should we go and buy bread for two hundred silver coins and give it to them to eat?"37But he answered, "You give them something to eat." They said to him, "That would take more than half a year's wages! Are we to go and spend that much on bread and give it to them to eat?"
He said to them, "How many loaves do you have? Go and see." When they found out, they said, "Five--and two fish."38"How many loaves do you have?" he asked. "Go and see." When they found out, they said, "Five--and two fish."
Then he directed them all to sit down in groups on the green grass.39Then Jesus directed them to have all the people sit down in groups on the green grass.
So they reclined in groups of hundreds and fifties.40So they sat down in groups of hundreds and fifties.
He took the five loaves and the two fish, and looking up to heaven, he gave thanks and broke the loaves. He gave them to his disciples to serve the people, and he divided the two fish among them all.41Taking the five loaves and the two fish and looking up to heaven, he gave thanks and broke the loaves. Then he gave them to his disciples to distribute to the people. He also divided the two fish among them all.
They all ate and were satisfied,42They all ate and were satisfied,
and they picked up the broken pieces and fish that were left over, twelve baskets full.43and the disciples picked up twelve basketfuls of broken pieces of bread and fish.
Now there were five thousand men who ate the bread. 44The number of the men who had eaten was five thousand.
Immediately Jesus made his disciples get into the boat and go on ahead to the other side, to Bethsaida, while he dispersed the crowd.45Immediately Jesus made his disciples get into the boat and go on ahead of him to Bethsaida, while he dismissed the crowd.
After saying good-bye to them, he went to the mountain to pray.46After leaving them, he went up on a mountainside to pray.
When evening came, the boat was in the middle of the sea and he was alone on the land.47Later that night, the boat was in the middle of the lake, and he was alone on land.
He saw them straining at the oars, because the wind was against them. As the night was ending, he came to them walking on the sea, for he wanted to pass by them.48He saw the disciples straining at the oars, because the wind was against them. Shortly before dawn he went out to them, walking on the lake. He was about to pass by them,
When they saw him walking on the water they thought he was a ghost. They cried out,49but when they saw him walking on the lake, they thought he was a ghost. They cried out,
for they all saw him and were terrified. But immediately he spoke to them: "Have courage! It is I. Do not be afraid."50because they all saw him and were terrified. Immediately he spoke to them and said, "Take courage! It is I. Don't be afraid."
Then he went up with them into the boat, and the wind ceased. They were completely astonished,51Then he climbed into the boat with them, and the wind died down. They were completely amazed,
because they did not understand about the loaves, but their hearts were hardened. 52for they had not understood about the loaves; their hearts were hardened.
After they had crossed over, they came to land at Gennesaret and anchored there.53When they had crossed over, they landed at Gennesaret and anchored there.
As they got out of the boat, people immediately recognized Jesus.54As soon as they got out of the boat, people recognized Jesus.
They ran through that whole region and began to bring the sick on mats to wherever he was rumored to be.55They ran throughout that whole region and carried the sick on mats to wherever they heard he was.
And wherever he would go--into villages, towns, or countryside--they would place the sick in the marketplaces, and would ask him if they could just touch the edge of his cloak, and all who touched it were healed. 56And wherever he went--into villages, towns or countryside--they placed the sick in the marketplaces. They begged him to let them touch even the edge of his cloak, and all who touched it were healed.
